In this paper, we presented the embedded Ethernet microcontroller for optical monitoring. This design is used for fiber monitoring in the FTTH system. The embedded Ethernet microcontroller is used to control the 1x8 optical switches where this switch is to reroute the optical signal in the FTTH system. These systems consisting of two primaries part communicating each other: (i) A server consisting of a microcontroller PIC18F97J60 with built-in embedded Ethernet controller module and (ii) a client computer. In this system, a microcontroller system is act like web server that store the web pages in their memory, a client computer can access this web page using web browser to monitor and control the microcontroller where the microcontroller is used to control the path of the optical signal by using optical switch.

In order to make modern measurement systems more flexible, faster and easier to configure and use, the implementation of wireless technology is needed into the Distributed Measurement system (DMS). There is a number of wireless standards available on the market, each one with unique characteristics. The paper is an attempt at categorizing different wireless standards to meet specific requirements of the DMSs. Innovative system architectures making use of modern microcontrollers and multiple wireless transmission standards were taken into account. In order to analyze the characteristics different wireless transmission standard (such as ZigBee and SimpliciTI.) in the operating condition available into the wireless DMS, experimental tests were devoted. The information obtained from theses experimental tests are used to develop a new design approach of the wireless connection into the DMS to integrate different standards and to achieve best transmission properties.

The demand for Internet content rose dramatically. Servers became more and more powerful and the bandwidth of end user connections and backbones grew constantly. Nevertheless users often experience poor performance when they access Web sites or download files. Reasons for such problems are often performance problems which occur directly on the servers (e.g. poor performance of server-side applications or during flash crowds), problems concerning the network infrastructure (e.g. long geographical distances, network overloads, etc.) and a surprising fact is that many people tend to access the same piece of information repeatedly. Web caching has been recognized as the effective schemes to alleviate the service bottleneck, minimize the user access latency and reduce the network traffic. Consequently, in this paper we discuss an alternative way to tackle these problems with an implementation of autonomous SPY tool. This tool is capable to self directed either to cache or not to cache the objects in a document based on the behavior of users' activities (number of object hits, script size of objects, and time to receive objects) in Internet based electronic services (e-services) for enhancing Web access.

This paper presents a new method to solve unit commitment problem with operating constraints using a hybrid ant system/priority list method (HASP). The proposed methodology employs ant system in cooperating with the priority list method to find unit commitment solution as means of mutually combining the advantages of them in that a flexibility of the priority list method is reinforced, while AS algorithm can gain the benefit of using bias information for improving its performance during search process. The simulation results show that the proposed HASP is capable of obtaining satisfactory solution within reasonable computational time. Moreover, the proposed HASP can be extensively applied to handle the ramp rate limits and the operating reserve constraint, which are important for modern power system operation.

Presently, mobile handheld device has successfully replaced traditional telephone to become the most popular wireless communication tools. Mobile Short Message Service (SMS) and Multimedia Message Service (MMS) fulfill almost all the user requirements as an effective communication and information delivering service. Since SMS/MMS become so popular on daily communication, there is a demand to communicate or exchange confidential information in a secure environment. Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is a proven solution, which using pairing of key, for secure communication encryption. In this paper, m-PKI is introduced to provide PKI encryption to the mobile SMS and MMS. This new approach allows the end-user to send private and classified message via SMS. The key pair generation and distribution are performed by the Certificate Authority (CA). The size of the key pair are studied and decided by the tradeoff between performance and security.

This paper describes about an automated microscopic imaging system for supporting asbestos qualitative analysis. By JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), the dispersion staining method is designated as a visual qualitative analysis for asbestos in the construction materials. In the analysis process using the microscope, the expert monitors the particles including asbestos fibers and count them. For supporting such observation process, we developed an automated microscopic image collecting system. It realizes to take the images of the target area and store them to the database automatically. In this paper, we introduce and report the prototype system and its performance.

Due to environmental mismatch, speech recognition systems often exhibit drastic performance degradation in noisy conditions. This paper presents a model-based technique termed Adaptive Parallel Model Combination (APMC) which compensates the initial acoustic models to reduce the discrepancy. APMC used the well-known PMC technique to composite a set of corrupted speech models, while fine tuning the mean parameter of the models using a transformation-based adaptation technique called Maximum Likelihood Spectral Transformation (MLST). Evaluated on a context-independent phone recognition task, APMC was found to be superior to both PMC and MLST, especially in non-stationary noisy conditions. On average, APMC has achieved 48.81% improvement over the initial models, whereas PMC and MLST have improved the accuracy by 34.12% and 35.23% respectively.
