In this paper, we concern a swing-up control problem for an n-link revolute planar robot with any one of the joint being a passive joint. The goal of this study is to design and analyze a swing-up controller that can bring the robot into any arbitrarily small neighborhood of the upright equilibrium point with all links in the upright position. To achieve this challenging objective while preventing the robot from becoming stuck at an undesired closed-loop equilibrium point, first, we address how to iteratively devise two series of virtual composite links separated by the passive joint to be used for designing a coordinate transformation on the angles of all active joints. Second, we devise an energy based swing-up controller that uses a new Lyapunov function based on that transformation. Third, we analyze the global motion of the robot under the controller and establish conditions on control parameters that ensure attainment of the swing-up control objective. The results obtained here unify some previous results for the Pendubot, the Acrobot, and three-link robots with a passive first joint. Finally, we validate the theoretical results via a numerical simulation investigation to a 4-link robot with a passive joint.

In this paper, we propose a query-feedback based routing approach for efficient routing in unstructured peer-to-peer network. In our approach, each node maintains a table that stores information about past queries that have been forward and answered. Each past query represents a number of peers. Each incoming query will be compared with the past queries in the table and similar and reliable peers will be selected to be routed to have an efficient routing approach. Experimental results show that our proposed approach outperforms other feedback based query routing technique in unstructured peer-to-peer networks.

In the future, Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET)s are expected to be deployed in myriads of scenarios having complex node mobility and connectivity dynamics. Unfortunately, these complex movement scenarios give a tough challenge to the MANET routing protocol. We reviewed some mobility models that have different mobility characteristic, and also studied the effect of these mobility models towards the performance of geographical-based route maintenance strategy in the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol.

In an effort to develop a tool for automatic ontology building from Malay text based on formal concept analysis, an effective natural language processing (NLP) tool as the pre-processing components is needed. The goal of the study is to investigate whether existing Malay NLP tools can be a viable component to be part of the ontology learning tool. This paper discusses the outcome of the study on three NLP applications. The annotated corpus approach was adopted in this study as deemed suitable for exploratory research. Using the metrics relative subject recall and precision, the results obtained show that statistical modeling technique outperformed pola grammar technique.

For the past few years, it has been possible to buy a business application including transaction processing systems for such tasks as accounting, manufacturing, or human resources as a packaged product. Packages to do this collection of work are generally referred to as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Most ERP systems are huge because of the diversity of tasks they must perform. The ERP systems are providing an integration of several tasks, and the flexibility to perform those tasks at enterprises with vastly varying needs. But, only few of these ERP systems developed have actually considered maintenance strategies. Maintenance is a complex process that is triggered by planned periodic repair (scheduled or planned maintenance), equipment breakdown or deterioration indicated by a monitored parameter (unplanned or emergency maintenance). This process includes planning, scheduling, monitoring, quality assurance and the development of necessary resources such as workshop, labor, machines, equipment, tools, spare parts and materials.

The latest Semantic Web developments and insights in knowledge management challenge the new era of semantic-based knowledge-management systems, where lies the new possibilities that Semantic Web affords for improved knowledge management. Connectivity and interoperability of knowledge management systems is the key to the vision of the future. We need a comprehensive framework that addresses main issues related to distributed Knowledge Management. Semantic Web Services (SWS) is the next major generation of the Web in which e-services and business communication become more knowledge-based. It proposes to extend the traditional Web Services technologies with its key enabling technologies of ontologies and semantics; to solve the problem of heterogeneity and interoperability of data across applications. This makes it possible to select, integrate and invocate services dynamically, which enable services to adapt themselves to changes without human intervention. The main purpose of this paper is to present the relevance of SWS technologies to KMS. Further, we discuss about the two major initiatives in SWS research. Later, we will propose ontology based semantic web services framework for KMS. Our focus is in the web service provider layer where we will introduce the three main components; knowledge manager, web service manager and ontology mapping manager.

To achieve high accuracy while lowering false alarm rates are major challenges in designing an intrusion detection system. In addressing this issue, this paper proposes an ensemble of one-class classifiers where each uses different learning paradigms. The techniques deployed in this ensemble model are; linear genetic programming (LGP), adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and random forest (RF). The strengths from the individual models were evaluated and ensemble rule was formulated. Empirical results show an improvement in detection accuracy for all classes of network traffic; normal, probe, DoS, U2R and R2L. RF, which is an ensemble learning technique that generates many classification trees and aggregates the individual result was also able to address imbalance dataset problem that many of machine learning techniques fail to sufficiently address it.

Remote talkers can communicate smoothly via their embodied avatars, which represent their interactive behaviors in the same virtual space. In order to enable virtual face-to-face communication, we have developed an embodied avatar-mediated communication system by using a human avatar called "VirtualActor" within the same communication space. The effectiveness of the system has been confirmed by communication experiments. We have already proposed the concept of a virtual communication avatar system in which remote talkers under the restricted conditions can operate their own avatar based on their hand motion, and have developed the prototype of this system using a glove sensor. In this study, communication systems using three pointing devices - a wireless mouse, trackball, and 3D mouse - are developed for primitive interaction using conscious hand motion input in a general PC environment. Instead of a simple trackball, a 3D trackball, which has one handle ball involving yaw rotation as well as pitch and roll rotation, is developed in order to manipulate the avatar's head motion in a more intuitive manner. A communication experiment in which the 3D trackball, wireless mouse, trackball, and 3D mouse are compared is conducted for 15 pairs of talkers (30 in all);a sensory evaluation and analysis of embodied avatar manipulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

This paper will start by mentioning very briefly previous results reported recently for mechanical sensors based on embedding a rectangular-lattice photonic crystal into the core of a standard monomode optical fiber. The next step will be to introduce and evaluate another mechanical sensor based on embedding a triangular-lattice photonic crystal into the core of the optical fiber. We will argue that such sensors (i.e., which embed photonic crystals into the core of optical fibers), are highly sensitive to mechanical deformations. Finally, we will estimate the sensitivity of the mechanical sensor which relies on a triangular-lattice photonic crystal, and compare it with that of a mechanical sensor which uses a rectangular-lattice photonic crystal. The main conclusion is that the triangular-based sensor is 22% more sensitive (than the rectangular-based one), while future directions of research will end the paper.

Mobile Web pre-caching (Web prefetching and caching) is an explication of performance enhancement and storage limitation of mobile devices. In this paper, we present the granularity of rough sets (RS) and RS based inductive learning in reducing the size of rules to be stored in mobile devices. The conditional attributes such as 'timestamp', 'size document' and 'object retrieval time' are presented and the provided decision is granted. Decision rules are obtained using RS based inductive learning to grant the ultimate judgment either to cache or not to cache the conditional attributes and objects. However, in mobile clients, these rules need to be specified so as the specific sessions can be kept in their mobile storage as well as the proxy caching administrations. Consequently, these rules will notify the objects in Web application request and priority level to the clients accordingly. The results represent that the granularity of RS in mobile Web pre-caching is vital to improve the latest Web caching technology by providing virtual client and administrator feedback; hence making Web pre-caching technologies practical, efficient and powerful.
