Collaboration consists mainly of two tasks; one is each partner's task which is done by the individual, the other is communication with each other. Both of them are very important for the smooth collaboration. From the viewpoint, the collaboration support system should be a coalition between the operation support and the communication support. We have developed the 3D shape evaluation support system in virtual space and the embodied virtual communication system for the analysis by synthesis. The fusion of two system is necessary for the collaboration support system for 3D shape evaluation in virtual space. From the viewpoint of communication, the talkers tend to prefer the situation in which they can share embodied interaction by observing their interaction of avatars including themselves in the same virtual space. However, the motion images including themselves would discourage them from the shape evaluation. In this paper, the influence of difference of the point of view on the shape evaluation in virtual space is investigated using the proposed system by the sensory evaluation of paired comparison and the questionnaire analysis. It is found that the subjects prefer the point of view from which they can see only their forearms' motion for the shape evaluation in virtual space.

The world wide web (WWW) already accounts for more Internet network traffic than any other application, including email and simple file transfer. It is also a collaborative technology in a weak sense of the word - it allows people to share information. Synchronous collaboration is where an interactive activity is simultaneous and in real-time. computer based synchronous collaborative systems like shared whiteboards, collaborative editor etc. are only beginning to emerge recently. These applications involving more than two users exchanging information, require multicast communication. Multicast communication is a transmission mode that is now supported by a variety of local and wide area networks. Multicasting enables multiparty communication across a wide area to sparsely distributed groups by minimizing the network load. Multicasting itself is one of the key technologies in the next generation of the Internet. This paper describes the technical issues from the aspect of multicast communication and its reliability in synchronous collaborative application.

A speech-driven embodied interactive actor called InterActor with both functions of speaker and listener is developed for activating human interaction and communication by generating expressive actions and motions coherently related to speech input. InterActor is the electronic media version of physical interaction robot called InterRobot for robot-mediated communication support, which sets free from the hardware restriction. By using InterActor, the concept of speech driven embodied interaction system is proposed for human interaction sharing by the entrainment between human speech and InterActor's motions in remote communication. The prototype of the system is developed, and the sensory evaluation and behavioral analysis in human communication through InterActor demonstrate the effectiveness of the system. Actual applications of InterActor to human interface are also demonstrated.

We propose a pipelined architecture for an equalizer based on the multilevel modified constant modulus algorithm (MMCMA). We also provide the correction factor that mathematically converts the adaptive equalizer having the proposed architecture into an equivalent non-pipelined conventional MMCMA based equalizer. The proposed architecture uses modules with 6 filter coefficients, resulting in an overall latency of a single sampling period, along the main transmission line. The basic concepts of the proposed architecture is to implement the finite impulse response (FIR) filter and the algorithm portion of the equalizer, such that the critical path of all circuits has three complex multipliers and three adders.

This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis method for plant machinery using wavelet transform (WT) genetic programming (GP) and possibility theory. The WT is used to extract feature spectra of each machine state from measured vibration signal for distinguishing faults. Excellent symptom parameters (SP) for detecting fault states are automatically generated by GP. The membership functions of symptom parameters are established using possibility theory for resolving the ambiguous diagnosis problems. The methods proposed in this paper are verified by applying them to the fault diagnosis of gear equipment.

A VLSI architecture dedicated to W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) baseband modem is described, with the main theme focused on the cell searcher and PIL (Prime InterLeaver). A search algorithm is refined for the cell searcher to minimize the circuit size, maintaining the operating throughput. In addition, a time-shared scheme is adopted for the turbo encoding/decoding, aiming at the maximization of the hardware sharing in the encoding/decoding process. Finally, implementation results are shown to demonstrate that the proposed architecture can contribute much toward the practical low-power implementation of W-CDMA baseband modem LSI.

There is a growing recognition that current manufacturing enterprises must be agile, and the use of virtual enterprise (VE) is becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. It is a very important and difficult activity in forming a virtual enterprise to select appropriate business partners, because each enterprise considers not only pursuing its profit but also sharing the risk to join the virtual enterprise. At first we propose a VE coalition algorithm based on multi-agent paradigm. Then we develop a computer simulation model to evaluate the proposed method by forming a virtual enterprise through multiple negotiations amongst several potential members in the negotiation domain. Finally, we clarify the coalition dynamism with the negotiation process. The effectiveness of the proposed concept in the agile manufacturing is discussed with several simulation experiments.

The master slave control is a technique often used when controlling a remote robot. In this technique, the operator can work while he notices the force which is added to the robot. However, when the taken time in the communication between the robot (the slave) and the operator (the master) is long, accurate control becomes difficult. This research aims to generate the force environment using the posture of the robot and the value detected with the sensor. With this, even if the communication time was long, the operator could operate a robot appropriately while he sensed the force added to the robot.
