This paper proposes the 1-affine transformation for rectangular video images. In the proposed method, each frame of the input rectangular video images is partitioned into small square subimages, which are stored separately in memory. Then, by applying the 90° rotation and the one-dimensional geometrical transformations alternately for two times each, the affine transformation is realized. The affine transformer based on this principle is realized by two kinds of functional modules corresponding to the 90° rotation and the one-dimensional geometrical transformation, respectively. The block diagram for the affine transformation is shown combining those functional modules. Calculation of the adequate size for the subimage, as well as the reduction of the memory speed requirement by the partitioning, are discussed. The proposed method can easily be applied to video images with different sizes only by modifying the combination of the two kinds of functional modules. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 31(7): 75–85, 2000

A Genetic Algorithm Approach to Identification of Nonlinear Polynomial Models

In the last two decades, linear-in-parameter nonlinear polynomial models for NARX (Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with eXogenous input) systems have received considerable attention. The keypoint of polynomial model identification is how to select a set of significant terms employed to approximate the NARX system under study, from a large number of candidates. To this end, the orthogonal least-squares method which is a local search procedure, and the genetic algorithm approach which has a high potential for global optimization have been proposed in the literature. However, it is considered that the methods reported so far in the literature still lack potential to identify the polynomial models with relatively high-order. This limits the applicability of the polynomial models to the real complex nonlinear systems. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, a new genetic algorithm approach to polynomial model identification is proposed. Our contribution in this paper is to introduce a novel hierarchical encoding technique which is considered to be suitable to the structure of the polynomial models. Simulation and application results are also included to verify the efficiency of the proposed identification algorithm.

For high sensitivity measurements of isotope concentration-ratios of trace-level gas mixture, particularly including carbon dioxide isotopes, we tested a /sup 12/CO/sub 2/-/sup 13/CO/sub 2/ composite laser system containing intracavity absorption cells. Sensitivity enhancement obtainable by the intracavity absorption cell configuration is examined theoretically. /sup 13/CO/sub 2/ in atmospheric air is readily detected and minimum detectable concentration by the present system was estimated to be 70 ppb.

In plasma processing systems for large sized wafer, quick evacuation of reaction gas by making the process space gap narrow is required to realize higher productivity and better quality of microelectronic devices. The wafer must be placed closely to the antenna aperture in this case. A radial line slot antenna (RLSA) for surface wave coupled plasma (SWP) is a promising candidate to this end. A novel slot arrangement in the aperture, which consists of densely arrayed transverse slots, was fabricated and tested. A uniform, high electron density of 3/spl times/10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/ and large-area plasma under the condition of low electron temperature has already been realized by experiments. It dispenses with DC magnetic fields required in ECR systems. For further development of slot design as well as the mechanism extraction of plasma generation, this paper evaluates the electromagnetic near fields of SWP RLSAs. As the first step, antennas in free space without the plasma as well as the glass vacuum window, is analyzed using the periodic array model. The predicted near field distribution is compared with the experiments and reasonable agreement is reported.

This paper deals with the estimation of an unknown process transfer function in the presence of colored measurement noise. A three-step estimation procedure has been previously developed for transfer functions, the delay steps and the orders of which are known in advance. The procedure is extended to deal with transfer functions with unknown delay steps and orders. The auto-correlation function of the error between the process output and model output is utilized for evaluating the model fitness. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by a simulation study using a sample set of data in MATLAB.

When using computers for the automatic condition diagnosis of plant machinery, symptom parameters (SP) extracted from some signals are indispensable. Currently, however there is no acceptable method for attracting the optimum SP. In order to overcome this difficulty and ensure highly accurate condition diagnosis, a new method called the "automatic generation of symptom parameters" is proposed by using genetic algorithms (GA). The authors have applied the method to many diagnoses of plant machinery and, in each case, the optimum SP has been quickly discovered. In this paper, they show the example of gear equipment diagnosis to verify the efficiency of this method.

The saturation (output) function is important to cellular neural networks (CNN) because it affects the operation, stable equilibrium points, and the performance of CNN. However, to the best of our knowledge, a systematic design procedure for the output function is not available in the literature. In this paper, we present a simple, yet effective design method for the tri-output cellular neural network (TCNN). To demonstrate the effectiveness of the output function using our design procedure, we tested TCNN on synthesized images. In addition, we applied the tri-output cellular neural network to the diagnosis of liver diseases and obtained very encouraging results.

We propose a new type tactile sensor, called the "double-octagon tactile sensor" (DOTS), in order to overcome the difficulty of the strength and the sensitivity of a tactile sensor, and show the structure and sensing principle of the DOTS. The sensor can sense the touch force from grams to several kilograms, and it can also detect the slip between hand fingers and grasped object. The robot hand installed with the sensor can successfully grasp soft tofu and heavy hardware. Furthermore, we develop an intelligent method to control the hand fingers for obtaining the optimum grasping force to the object based on the information sensed by the tactile sensor. The grasping control method can be applied to grasp any unknown objects quickly and automatically. Example of tightening a steel bolt and a light glass bulb by a robot hand equipped with the DOTS are also shown to verify the efficiency of the DOTS and the intelligent grasping control method.
