Lack of hearing ability hinders deaf children from mastering grammar in language studies. Unfortunately, such software targeting Malay language is limited. This paper attempts to generate new approach in handling such software. These include detection of defects when switching into local languages, date format and accommodating the local laws. The acceptance of international software for local use goes beyond just these aspects. For this purpose, software that supports the multi-languages is evaluated. The main research question of this paper: The lack of cultural dimensions in localisation testing of assistive technology decreases the effectiveness of localisation testing of the localised software. On the account of cultural dimensions, Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions will be experimented to study which cultural dimensions are most suited for such software. From our empirical results, the failure rate of the testing is higher compared to incorporating culture dimensions.

Learning Object (LO) is one of the main research topics in the e-learning community in the recent years, and most researchers pay attention to the issue of Learning Object Reusability. The most obvious motivation is the economic interest of reusing learning material instead of repeatedly authoring it. In this paper we present the process of creating granular learning object for enabling the reusing of LO in e-Learning context. Reusability requires the LO to be in a fine-grain form because raw media elements are often much easier to reuse then aggregate assemblies. In other words, as the LO size decreases (lower granularity), its potential for reuse increases. A prototype of learning objects repository that contain granular LO has been developed to show the process of granularizing LO. Each of existing LO will be extracted into granular element with the metadata and the system generated unique id for each LO based on its identifier (URL of LO) and save automatically the metadata contain in the LO. These metadata will be used for searching and retrieval process of the granule LO.

An alternative algorithm for classification large categorical dataset: K-mode clustering reduced support vector machine.

The reduced support vector machine (RSVM) is extension method of smooth support vector machine (SSVM) for handling computational difficulties as well as reduces the model complexity by generating a nonlinear separating surface for a large dataset. To generate representative reduce set for RSVM, clustering reduced support vector machine (CRSVM) was proposed. However, CRSVM is restricted to solve classification problems for large dataset with numeric attributes. In this paper, we propose an alternative algorithm, k-mode RSVM (KMO-RSVM) that combines RSVM and k-mode clustering technique to handle classification problems on categorical large dataset. Applying k-mode clustering algorithm to each class, we can generate cluster centroids of each class and use them to form the reduced set which is used in RSVM. In our experiments, we tested the effectiveness of KMO-RSVM on four public available dataset. It turns out that KMO-RSVM can improve speed of running time significantly than SSVM and still obtained a high accuracy. Comparison with RSVM indicates that KMO-RSVM is faster, gets smaller reduced set and comparable testing accuracy than RSVM.

Psychophysiological treatment in reduced anxiety with biofeedback training for university students

Researchers found some individuals with anxiety disorders, and most of the university's students suffer from some degree of anxiety level during the academic years. Anxiety was prevalent and persistent in student's population. More than half of students with significant symptoms of anxiety do not receive treatment even over two year periods. This research offers a psychophysiological treatment to reduce anxiety through biofeedback training for university students. A total 35 students were participated during 10 th sessions training. They are students who have high anxiety level. The psychophysiological arousal was measure used beat-per-minute and breath-per-minute. Repeating measurement of ANOVA was used to evaluate during the 1 st session, 4 th session, 7 th session, and 10 th session and further compare the differences. The result shows that there is a significant change over time in the beat-per-minute and breath-per-minute through the participants. From the training, it is shown that after 10 th session, students be able to control their heartbeat and respiration to reduce anxiety level. It is concluded that the psychophysiological treatment with biofeedback training is an effective method to reduce anxiety for university students.

Representation of social anxiety among engineering students

Social anxiety can be seen in students with special needs such low self-confidence, to feel shy, difficult relationship with roommate, problem with peers, and feeling uncomfortable in hostel. The effect of social life is an important issue among students. In this paper, the representation of social anxiety was presented with different manifestation than prior studies. That was investigated among engineering students. One sample t -test was used to examine the possible dimensions of social anxiety. The data collection was used a survey. A total 770 students participated to fill the questionnaire. The students were second years on five engineering faculties in Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The social anxiety designates into seven factors include; (1) problem with peer, (2) Hostel is uncomfortable for study, (3) face problem with roommates, (4) homesick, (5) feel that campus environment uncomfortable for study, (6) racial diversity, and (7) too many roommates are making study difficult. The finding shows a significant of seven factors as creator of social anxiety among engineering students. The instrument can be use to examine social anxiety for university students was recommended.

Re-test of State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) among engineering Students in Malaysia: Reliability and Validity tests

Various tests have been conducted using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and it has provided adequate evidence to measure anxiety in research and clinical settings. This paper proposes a re-test to evaluate STAI among engineering students in Malaysia. A total 253 engineering students participated in this study. The re-test was presented for reliability, construct validity, and coefficient correlation of State and Trait. The reliability coefficients were computed using Cronbach alpha. In order to determine the validity of the instrument used factor analysis and coefficient correlation were used. Results: The STAI was established with the reliability at .850. In addition, the construct validity of the STAI, as measured by factor analysis were found, the correlation between items (KMO) score .824 (>.30 ) and p=.000. Where, the State shows KMO=.818, p=.000, and Cronbach alpha found .797. Meanwhile, Trait proved KMO=.783, p=.000, and Cronbach alpha found .781. The results show that the reliability and validity of State Trait Anxiety Inventory was suitable and acceptable. Consistently, strong correlations between State and Trait scale scores provided supportive evidence for the instrument. The results are evident and it can be recommended as an instrument to measure anxiety level for similar studies.

Smart cane: Assistive cane for visually-impaired people

This paper reports on a study that helps visually-impaired people to walk more confidently. The study hypothesizes that a smart cane that alerts visually-impaired people over obstacles in front could help them in walking with less accident. The aim of the paper is to address the development work of a cane that could communicate with the users through voice alert and vibration, which is named Smart Cane. The development work involves coding and physical installation. A series of tests have been carried out on the smart cane and the results are discussed. This study found that the Smart Cane functions well as intended, in alerting users about the obstacles in front.

A pilot study of pre- post anxiety treatment to improve academic performance for engineering students

In this paper, we present a pilot study of pre- post treatment toward overcoming anxiety in improving academic performance for engineering's students. The anxiety level measurement was used to examine the effect of the intervention, as well to acquire the prior finding on the effectiveness of a treatment to reduce anxiety in improving academic performance. It is based on a pre post design to evaluate the effect of intervention by using breath per-minute (bpm) and grade point average (GPA). Six males and females engineering's students participated in this study. They received six sessions of treatment each for two hours of intervention. It includes breathing retreatment, relaxation, study coping skills. The results show that, the number of anxieties was significantly reduced which bpm shows t (2;5)= 4.788; p=.005 (p<.05). Furthermore, for GPA the difference is not significant with t (0;5)= -1.894; p=.117 (p>.05). Since all participants had reduced their anxiety level and improve their academic performance, we recommend that this intervention as an effective approach in reducing anxiety level.

We propose a novel approach of knowledge visualization method by adopting graph-based visualization technique and incorporating Dashboard concept for higher education institutions. Two aspects are emphasized, knowledge visualization and human-machine interaction. The knowledge visualization helps users to analyze the comprehensive characteristics of the students, lecturers and subjects after the clustering process and the interaction enable domain knowledge transfer and the use of the human's perceptual capabilities, thus increases the intelligence of the system. The knowledge visualization is enhanced through the dashboard concept where it provides significant patterns of knowledge on real-world and theoretical modeling which could be called wisdom. The framework consists of the dashboard model, system architecture and system prototype for higher education environment is presented in this paper. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper we present a middleware for storing and retrieving XML document in relational databases. To store XML documents in relational databases, several mapping prototypes can be used. I n this prototype we chose XParent model mapping method and free of cost available technologies MySQL, Php MyAdmin and PHP classes are used the example. The key to middleware prototype is storing and retrieving XML document in a relational database, providing a user interface for XML manipulation, independent of proprietorship and without doing any modification in its basic structure. As the proposed prototype is using XParent so it will be proved to be an efficient solution with respect to query processing specially recursive XML queries and updating. The middleware prototype can also be used as the benchmarking tool for the researchers to compare various schema-oblivious XML mapping strategies after adding them as new collection. © 2010 IEEE.
