Distributed collaboration over the Internet has become increasingly common in recent years, supported by various technologies such as virtual workspace systems. Often such collaboration is ad-hoc, and virtual workspaces are set up anew for each new instance of collaboration. We propose that much of the ad-hoc collaboration can be captured and transformed into patterns for reuse in future collaboration. This paper presents the results of the past five years of our work in this area. We introduce the notion of patterns of virtual collaboration;present a framework for extracting patterns of work in virtual workspace systems;and introduce an information model of virtual collaboration. We then present an overview of our data and process mining methods and reverse engineering techniques for discerning work processes carried out through virtual workspace systems. Finally we present our visual mining techniques that we use to discern aspects of work processes in virtual workspaces.

Ambiguous triage scenarios in hospital emergency departments are often difficult to assess without decision support. Subjective assessments of such scenarios can either lead to under-triaging or over-triaging for which true conditions of patients are often not addressed within the required time. In this paper, we propose a decision support model that can guide a clinician when identifying the urgency of medical intervention when patient presents with ambiguous triage case. Our model is a heuristic approach that selects the best triage category, identifies corresponding discriminating attribute of the patient, and allows clinician to attach a level of confidence in the decision. We implemented this model as a mobile decision support system, called iTriage. Results of an initial evaluation of iTriage using fourteen paper-based adult triage scenarios showed that our model produced robust decisions for urgent scenarios. For non-urgent scenarios, the proposed model provided guidance especially when the scenarios were ambiguously stated.

An approach for tracking the impact is regression benchmarking, which involves automated benchmarking and evaluation of performance at regular intervals. Regression benchmarking must tackle the nondeterminism inherent to contemporary computersystems and execution environments and the impact of the nondeterminism on the results. On the example of a fully automated regression benchmarking environment for the mono open-source project, we show how the problems associated with nondeterminism can be tackled using statistical methods.

The LMS algorithm forms the core of a number of adaptive control schemes. It has on one hand provided certain degree of robustness to these algorithms but on the other hand its convergence rate is notoriously slow. We propose a method to initialize the LMS algorithm which dramatically shortens its adaptation period. We also prove that under certain condition this initialization can be computed without explicit knowledge of either the reference or noise spectrum. Although the work is illustrated using the filtered-X scheme, this idea can also be applied to other similar schemes. Two successful experiments starting from black-box identification to real-time control have verified the effectiveness of this idea.
