In this paper, we introduce a refined Educational Data Mining approach, which refrains from explicit learner modeling along with an evaluation concept. We use a Data Mining technology, which models students' learning characteristics by considering real data instead of deriving their characteristics explicitly. It aims at mining course characteristics similarities of former students' study traces and utilizing them to optimize curricula of current students based to their performance traits revealed by their educational history. This refined technology generates suggestions of personalized curricula. The technology includes an adaptation mechanism, which compares recent data with historical data to ensure that the similarity of mined characteristics follow the dynamic changes affecting curriculum (e.g., revision of course contents and materials, and changes in teachers, etc.). Finally, the paper shows some pre-validation results and approaches for a final validation.

In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.

A five-dimensional (5D) controlled two-stage Colpitts oscillator is introduced and analyzed. This new electronic oscillator is constructed by considering the well-known two-stage Colpitts oscillator with two further elements (coupled inductors and variable resistor). In contrast to current approaches based on piecewise linear (PWL) model, we propose a smooth mathematical model (with exponential nonlinearity) to investigate the dynamics of the oscillator. Several issues, such as the basic dynamical behaviour, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency spectra of the oscillator, are investigated theoretically and numerically by varying a single control resistor. It is found that the oscillator moves from the state of fixed point motion to chaos via the usual paths of period-doubling and interior crisis routes as the single control resistor is monitored. Furthermore, an experimental study of controlled Colpitts oscillator is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit is proposed for the investigations of the complex dynamics behaviour of the system. A very good qualitative agreement is obtained between the theoretical/numerical and experimental results.

Within this paper, we will describe a grid concept to realize a universal remote lab infrastructure as well as different operation modes based on this concept. This new infrastructure consists of three parts: an internal serial remote lab bus, a bus protection unit to interface the remote lab bus and to protect it from misuse and damage as well as a protection unit, which protects the physical systems (the electro-mechanical models in our remote lab) against deliberate damage or accidentally wrong control commands and which offers different access and control mechanisms. The interconnection between the Web-control units and the selected physical system during a remote lab work session (experiment) as well as the user management is done by the lab server, which also handles the webcams. The implemented remote lab infrastructure is based on the iLab architecture of the MIT, which allows to interconnect remote labs and to exchange remote lab experiments among different universities worldwide. © 2012 IEEE.

The MORPH project (FP 7, 2012-2016) aims at the development of efficient methods and tools to map the underwater environment in situations that defy existing technology. Namely, missions that involve underwater surveying and marine habitat mapping of rugged terrain and structures with full 3D complexity, including near-vertical cliffs. Potential applications include the study of cold water coral reefs or ecosystems in underwater canyons. For mapping purposes, the project advances the novel concept of an underwater robotic sensor carrier consisting of a number of spatially separated mobile robotic modules, each of them carrying complementary sensors. The modules are connected virtually via wireless communication links. Free from the constraints of rigid links, the modules can reconfigure themselves spatially and position their sensors optimally as a function of the shape of the terrain, which may include walls with a negative slope. In the scope of the project, a final demonstration on a vertical cliff will validate the efficacy of the methods developed.

The main idea behind this project is to provide a unified platform which will cover a complete process for embedded systems learning. A modular approach is considered for skills practice through supporting individualization in learning. This platform shall facilitate a novel development of universal approach in creative learning environment and knowledge management that encourage use of ICT. New learning model is challenging the education of engineers in embedded systems design through real-time experiments that stimulate curiosity with ultimate goal to support students to understand and construct their personal conceptual knowledge based on experiments. In addition to the technological approach, the use of cognitive theories on how people learn will help students to achieve a stronger and smarter adaptation of the subject. Applied methodology will be evaluated from the scientific point of view in parallel with the implementation in order to feedback results to the R&D.

In this paper, the authors present the development of a data modelling tool that visualizes the transformation process of an ＂Entity-Relationship＂ Diagram （ERD） into a relational database schema. The authors＇ focus is the design of a tool for educational purposes and its implementation on e-learning database course. The tool presents two stages of database design. The first stage is to draw ERD graphically and validate it. The drawing is done by a learner. Then at second stage, the system enables automatically transformation of ERD to relational database schema by using common rules. Thus, the learner could understand more easily how to apply the theoretical material. A detailed description of system functionalities and algorithm for the conversion are proposed. Finally, a user interface and usage aspects are exposed.
