This contribution shows how a resonance-induced extraordinary acoustic transmission through a phononic crystal structure can be used as sensor for liquid properties. The phononic crystal consists of a metal plate with a periodic array of holes. Ultrasound propagates in a way that the incidence direction of sound is perpendicular to the plate. A characteristic transmission peak has been found to strongly depend on liquid sound velocity. The respective peak maximum frequency serves as measure for liquid composition. Numerical calculations based on FDTD and FEA reveal more insides to the propagation characteristics, in particular the presence of specific plate modes. Experimental investigations using a laser vibrometer and the Schlieren method support the theoretical findings.

A solution to trajectory-tracking control problem for a four-wheel-steering vehicle (4WS) is proposed using sliding-mode approach. The advantage of this controller over current control procedure is that it is applicable to a large class of vehicles with single or double steering and to a tracking velocity that is not necessarily constant. The sliding-mode approach make the solutions robust with respect to errors and disturbances, as demonstrated by the simulation results.

Implementation of active control has much potential to contribute to the creation and construction of innovative structures. This paper summarizes recent research of the authors that is the study of biomimetic control solutions regarding balance and locomotion of robotic systems. A first goal of the work consists in identifying solutions necessary to balance the individual systems. Research has been focused both on systems with a single foot, but also on biped, tripods, quadrupeds, hexapods and octopods. Static balance is achieved by a proper mechanical design (Bizdoaca and Petrisor, 2009), but also by a corresponding load / tensioning actuators systems that can compensate for inertial elements that can lead to system stability limit. Theoretical studies have been focused on developing an efficient stepping algorithm in environment with strong uncertainties, known as SSTA algorithm. The article present a series of experiments made with servo actuated and smart actuated (based on shape memory alloy, especially) walking biomimetic structures.

Real-time applications should timely deliver synchronized data-sets, minimize latency in their response and meet their performance specifications in the presence of disturbances and faults. The fault tolerant behavior in mobile robots refers to the possibility to autonomously detect and identify faults as well as the capability to continue operating after a fault occurred. This paper introduces a real-time distributed control application with fault tolerance capabilities for differential wheeled mobile robots, named ARTEMIC. Specific design, development and implementation details will be provided in this paper.
