This paper presents a signal processing framework for automatic anxiety level classification in a virtual reality exposure therapy system. Two types of biophysical data (heart rate and electrodermal activity) were recorded, pre-processed and passed through a feature extraction procedure that provided input for the real-time anxiety level classification algorithm. We showcase the mathematical and engineering techniques behind the procedures and conclude with the challenges encountered in our research and future development ideas. The proposed method provides a good estimate of the level of anxiety while having at the same time a reduced level of complexity, allowing implementation on equipment with limited computing resources. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. This paper proposes a user selection scheme for federated learning (FL) over wireless networks to reduce communication time based on channel capacity. In particular, the edge server calculates the Shannon channel capacity of each client for each round, and clients with a certain threshold capacity are randomly selected to participate in FL. We show that the convergence time of the proposed scheme outperformed that of the conventional scheme through computer simulation based on an image processing task under a wireless channel with pass-loss, shadowing, and Rician flat-fading. Moreover, the superiority of FL to centralized learning (CL) regarding total time is demonstrated theoretically and validated through computer simulation.

This paper presents a novel approach for the online calculation of Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) gains using the Tabular Dyna-Q algorithm. By leveraging Q-learning, this technique enables the determination of gains for unknown dynamic systems by using input-output data only. The proposed algorithm is particularly advantageous for situations where acquiring input-output data is expensive or time-consuming, as it effectively reduces computation time by reusing previous data. To validate the accuracy of the calculations and control scheme, a simulation example is provided. The results indicate the effectiveness of the Tabular Dyna-Q algorithm in accurately computing LQR gains and its potential application in real-world scenarios. This research contributes to advancing the field of control theory by offering an efficient and reliable method for online gain calculation in dynamic systems.

The paper presents project and its verification of a prototype integrated circuit containing an analog, programmable finite impulse response (FIR) filter, implemented in CMOS 350 nm technology. The structure of the filter is based on the switched capacitor technique. In circuits of this type, one of main challenges is an efficient implementation of filter coefficients, which result from several factors described in this work. When implementing such filters as programmable circuits, the values of their coefficients have to be limited to a selected range, i.e. a given resolution in bits. In the implemented prototype filter, the filter coefficients are represented by 6 bits in sign-magnitude notation, so they can take 63 different values only. In such filters, it is not possible to directly implement any frequency response of the filter. Each time, it is necessary to properly round the theoretical values of the coefficients so that they fit into the available range of discrete values resulting from the implementation. The authors of the work designed an algorithm that allows such matching. The paper also presents results of measurements of the prototype chip.

This study aims to improve the performance of message data transmission in Aggregated Robot Processing (ARP) architecture where the RELIABLE option of the RELIABILITY QoS (Quality of Service) policy is applied to a ROS 2 (Robot Operating System 2) node communication. Basically, the RELIABLE option guarantees that a publisher properly send all message data to a subscriber. However, the publisher could fail to transmit some message data to the subscriber even in the RELIABLE QoS option unless the buffer size of the publisher is enough. We introduce local cache to a sensing component to alleviate the issue in the case that the sensors output the same value in a row. The experimental results showed that the local cache improved the latency and reduced the message loss in node communication.

The efficient operation of HVAC&R systems are based on keeping indoor temperature and air quality at an optimum level without disturbing comfort. Starting from this point, in this experimental research, the factors affecting the measurement accuracy during the room temperature detection of a wall mount fan coil thermostat were examined. Among the external effects, the effect of the device components on the measurement was focused and the solution of the measurement deviations occurred in this extent was investigated. Based on the experiments, the algorithm that must be applied to reach the optimum temperature measurement of a room thermostat developed for Fan Coil systems was proposed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a robust controller designed for load frequency control in a dual-area integrated power grid. Here, the suggested controller is a blend of a fuzzy logic controller with an integral controller. The parameters of the integral controller and frequency bias settings are optimized to enhance the dynamic response of the proposed controller. To attain this, three distinct optimization algorithms are employed, i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and pattern search. A new objective function using settling time, settling-max, and settling-min with a suitable weight factor is used to improve the parameters estimation process. A comparative analysis is performed using the proposed approach and classical-I controller under two cases considering several load disturbance scenarios. Furthermore, the suggested hybrid controller is evaluated and compared with similar models in the literature. As expected, the proposed controller exhibits superior performance. © 2023 IEEE.

This work presents the results of the examination of the HeLa cell line exposure on the ELF-EMF (extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field). In particular, the relationship between ELF-EMF exposition time and cell death. The examination of cell death hallmarks were examined by estimation levels of selected proteins - FACL4 (a protein that is a part of the ferroptosis pathway) and CK18 (Cytokeratin related to necrosis and apoptosis pathways) in the proposed model of workers exposed to ELF-EMF week.

In order to achieve a highly accurate estimation of solar energy resource potential,a novel hybrid ensemble-learning approach,hybridizing Advanced Squirrel-Search Optimization Algorithm(ASSOA)and support vector regression,is utilized to estimate the hourly tilted solar irradiation for selected arid regions in ***-term measured meteorological data,including mean-air temperature,relative humidity,wind speed,alongside global horizontal irradiation and extra-terrestrial horizontal irradiance,were obtained for the two cities of Tamanrasset-and-Adrar for two *** computational algorithms were considered and analyzed for the suitability of *** two new algorithms,namely Average Ensemble and Ensemble using support vector regression were developed using the hybridization *** accuracy of the developed models was analyzed in terms of five statistical error metrics,as well as theWilcoxon rank-sum and ANOVA *** the previously selected algorithms,K Neighbors Regressor and support vector regression exhibited good ***,the newly proposed ensemble algorithms exhibited even better *** proposed model showed relative root mean square errors lower than 1.448%and correlation coefficients higher than *** was further verified by benchmarking the new ensemble against several popular swarm intelligence *** is concluded that the proposed algorithms are far superior to the commonly adopted ones.

This paper presents an application of a mixture of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) as a tool for verification of IoT fuel sensors. The IoT fuel sensors report the level of fuel in tanks of a petrol station, and are a key component for monitoring system reliability (billing), safety (fuel/oil leak detection) and security (theft prevention). We propose an algorithm for learning a mixture of HMMs based on a continual learning principle, i.e. it adapts the model while monitoring a sensor over time, signalling unexpected or anomalous sensor reports. We have tested the proposed approach on a real-life data of 15 fuel tanks being monitored with the FuelPrime system, where it has shown a very good performance (average area under ROC curve of 0.94) of detecting anomalies in the sensor data. Additionally we show that the proposed method can be used for trend monitoring and present qualitative analysis of the short and long term learning performance. The proposed method has promising performance score, the resulting model has a high degree of explainability, limited memory and computation requirements and can be easily generalized to other domains of sensor verification. © 2023 Polish Information Processing Society.
