Finding strongly connected components (SCCs) and the diameter of a directed network play a key role in a variety of discrete optimization problems, and subsequently, machine learning and control theory problems. On the one hand, SCCs are used in solving the 2-satisfiability problem, which has applications in clustering, scheduling, and visualization. On the other hand, the diameter has applications in network learning and discovery problems enabling efficient internet routing and searches, as well as identifying faults in the power grid. In this paper, we leverage consensus-based principles to find the SCCs in a scalable and distributed fashion with a computational complexity of O (Ddmax in-degree ) , where D is the (finite) diameter of the network and dmax in-degree is the maximum in-degree of the network. Additionally, we prove that our algorithm terminates in D + 1 iterations, which allows us to retrieve the diameter of the network. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm on several random networks, including Erdos-Rényi, Barabási- Albert, and Watts-Strogatz networks. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has recently achieved impressive performance on various time series tasks. The most prominent advantage of SSL is that it reduces the dependence on labeled data. Based on the pre-training and fine-tuning strategy, even a small amount of labeled data can achieve high performance. Compared with many published self-supervised surveys on computer vision and natural language processing, a comprehensive survey for time series SSL is still missing. To fill this gap, we review current state-of-the-art SSL methods for time series data in this article. To this end, we first comprehensively review existing surveys related to SSL and time series, and then provide a new taxonomy of existing time series SSL methods by summarizing them from three perspectives: generative-based, contrastive-based, and adversarial-based. These methods are further divided into ten subcategories with detailed reviews and discussions about their key intuitions, main frameworks, advantages and disadvantages. To facilitate the experiments and validation of time series SSL methods, we also summarize datasets commonly used in time series forecasting, classification, anomaly detection, and clustering tasks. In this letter, we propose a control scheme for regulating the voltage in Direct Current (DC) power networks. In contrast with other works in the literature where the loads are assumed to be constant, we consider uncertain time-varying loads described as the outputs of nonlinear dynamical exosystems with uncertain parameters. Based on the output regulation methodology, the proposed control scheme ensures the robust stability of the overall network and achieves voltage regulation in presence of impedance (Z), current (I), and power (P) loads. The simulation results illustrate excellent performance of the proposed control scheme.

The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles. © 2020 The Authors. A Global Asymptotically Stable Nonlinear Robust Bias Observer for MEMS Gyros

In practical applications, commercial-grade Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) gyros tend to exhibit dynamics sensitivities which are resistant to modeling by linear drift. To address the problem, a new nonlinear robust bias observer (NRBO) is proposed in this paper. Unlike the existing attitude and gyro bias nonlinear observers, we propose a dynamics-sensitive gyro bias decomposition method to tackle unknown nonlinear dynamic models of MEMS gyro bias. We expose the potential advantages of the proposed method: the global asymptotic stability of the NBRO and the robustness to the bias instability of MEMS gyros can be guaranteed through a rational design of the attitude-angular rate nonlinear dynamic coupling (AARNDC) term and the attitude-linear coupling (ALC) term. In addition, the attitude estimation with bias correction is given in the framework of NBRO. In this paper, a fast, effective and robust features extraction system has been developed. To successfully design this hardware architecture, a conversion from RGB to HSV was applied. Likewise, hardware architecture of Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) method was proposed. Vivado System Generator (VSG) tool was used to design architectures. To validate the performance of the proposed system, Benchmarks was applied. Moreover, execution time and resources utilization demonstrated a promising quality of such proposed system.

Abnormal Road Surface Detection Using Wheel Sensor Data

Intelligent tires can be employed for a wide array of applications ranging from tire pressure monitoring to analyzing tire/road interactions, wheel loading as well as tread wear monitoring. In this paper we develop a measurement system for intelligent tires equipped with a 3-dimensional piezoresistive force sensor. The output of the sensor is segmented into tire revolution cycles, which are then represented by a transformation relying on adaptive Hermite functions. The underlying idea behind this step is to extract relevant features which capture tire dynamics. Then we evaluate the proposed measurement system in a potential vehicle application, that is, abnormal road surface detection. We deal with the corresponding binary classification problem by developing both low-complexity analytical and data-driven machine learning algorithms, which are tested on real-world measurement data. Our experiments showed that the proposed methods are able to detect abnormalities on the road surface with a mean accuracy of over 97%.MSC Codes 65T99 © 2021, CC BY.

Genome rearrangement is a hallmark of all cancers. Cancer breakpoint prediction appeared to be a difficult task, and various machine learning models did not achieve high prediction power. We investigated the power of machine learning models to predict breakpoint hotspots selected with different density thresholds and also compared prediction of hotspots versus individual breakpoints. We found that hotspots are considerably better predicted than individual breakpoints. While choosing a selection criterion, the test ROC AUC only is not enough to choose the best model, the lift of recall and lift of precision should be taken into consideration. Investigation of the lift of recall and lift of precision showed that it is impossible to select one criterion of hotspot selection for all cancer types but there are three to four distinct groups of cancer with similar properties. Overall the presented results point to the necessity to choose different hotspots selection criteria for different types of cancer. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. Iris segmentation and localization in unconstrained environments is challenging due to long distances, illumination variations, limited user cooperation, and moving subjects. Some existing methods in the literature, each of which has somehow mitigated some of the mentioned issues. In this paper, motivated by these weaknesses, we propose a framework that employs a deep neural network-based approach to iris segmentation and localization. The proposed framework is based on a U-Net architecture that has been initialized with a pre-trained MobileNetV2 model. In addition, we have collected 1000 images to study the detectors in iris recognition scenarios better. The provided dataset (KartalOl) is available free for the research community. In the proposed framework, to better generalizability, we fine-tune the MobileNetV2 model on the provided data for NIR-ISL 2021 from the CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, and CASIA-Iris-Africa and our dataset. Also, data augmentation technics are applied on images. We chose the binarization threshold for the binary masks by iterating over the images in the provided dataset. The proposed framework is trained and tested in CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, CASIA-Iris-Africa, along the KartalOl dataset. The experimental results highlight that our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on mobile-based benchmarks.
