Frequency estimation of multi-sinusoidal signals in finite-time

This paper considers the problem of frequency estimation for a multi-sinusoidal signal consisting of n sinuses in finite-time. The parameterization approach based on applying delay operators to a measurable signal is used. The result is the nth order linear regression model with n parameters, which depends on the signals frequencies. We propose to use Dynamic Regressor Extension and Mixing method to replace nth order regression model with n first-order regression models. Then the standard gradient descent method is used to estimate separately for each the regression model parameter. On the next step using algebraic equations finite-time frequency estimate is found. The described method does not require measuring or calculating derivatives of the input signal, and uses only the signal measurement. This paper introduces a novel control strategy, Fixed-time Virtual Inertia (Fxt-VI), designed to enhance frequency stability in islanded microgrids (MGs) that typically lack synchronous generation. Unlike traditional power systems, which rely on physical inertia, MGs necessitate inertia emulation due to the integration of fluctuating renewable energy sources. A key feature of the proposed Fxt-VI control strategy is its ability to quickly resolve frequency deviations within a predefined time frame, regardless of the initial system conditions. This ensures accelerated and predictable stabilization times. A thorough analysis using Lyapunov-based method is developed to validate the stability of the designed control strategy within a fixed time. Simulations in an islanded microgrid setup, including various energy sources such as thermal, wind, solar power plants, and energy storage systems, demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed Fxt-VI controller. Moreover, this paper provides a comparative evaluation of the proposed FxT-VI controller in relation to robust $\mathrm{H}-\infty$ and optimal PI controllers. The results show that it not only achieves quicker stabilization but also maintains lower frequency deviations compared to traditional methods, as assessed through specific performance metrics.

Modern data centers’ providers are gradually moving away from traditional and multi-vendor IT infrastructures to open, standardized and interchangeable solutions that are based on a software defined approach to managing data center resources. The authors analyze the architectural features, requirements, limitations, hardware and software of hyperconverged infrastructures and their advantages in comparison with traditional and converged architectures deployed in data centers. The authors propose to employ two-level coordination schema to manage compute, storage, network and virtualization subsystems of hyperconverged infrastructure along with the self-management algorithms inside these subsystems. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

Motivated by the inadequacy of the existing control strategies for power systems affected by time-varying uncontrolled power injections such as loads and the increasingly widespread renewable energy sources, this paper proposes two control schemes based on the well-known output regulation control methodology. The first one is designed based on the classical output regulation theory and addresses the so-called Load Frequency control (LFC) problem in presence of time-varying uncontrolled power injections. Then, in order to also minimize the generation costs, we use an approximate output regulation method that solves numerically only the partial differential equation of the regulator equation and propose a controller based on this solution, minimizing an appropriate penalty function. An extensive case study shows excellent performance of the proposed control schemes in different and critical scenarios. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Passivity properties for regulation of DC networks with stochastic load demand

In this paper we present new (stochastic) passivity properties for Direct Current (DC) power networks, where the unknown and unpredictable load demand is modelled by a stochastic process. More precisely, the considered power network consists of distributed generation units supplying ZIP loads, i.e., nonlinear loads comprised of impedance (Z), current (I) and power (P) components. Differently from the majority of the results in the literature, where each of these components is assumed to be constant, we consider time-varying loads whose dynamics are described by a class of stochastic differential equations. Finally, we prove that an existing distributed control scheme achieving current sharing and (average) voltage regulation ensures the asymptotic stochastic stability of the controlled network. Background: systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are described by input affine state-space (SS) representations. The conversion approach results in LPV-SS representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept, first the SS description of a given NL representation is transformed to a normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded into one NL function, which is factorized, based on a proposed algorithm, to construct an LPV representation of the original NL system. The overall procedure yields an LPV model in which the scheduling variable depends on the inputs and outputs of the system and their derivatives, achieving a practically applicable transformation of the model in case of low order derivatives. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then a modified procedure is proposed to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. This article proposes a fixed-time adaptive fault-tolerant control methodology for a larger class of high-order nonlinear systems subject to full-state constraints and actuator faults. In contrast with the state-of-the-art results, the distinguishing feature of our control design consists in proposing a novel high-order tan-type barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) which ensures state variables to be some asymmetric time-varying compact sets under tan-type constraints and expands the application range of tan-type BLF (i.e., from low-order to high-order, from symmetric time-invariant to asymmetric time-varying). Apart from this, the proposed control design ensures the tracking errors converge to specified residual sets within fixed-time and makes the size of the convergence regions of tracking errors adjustable a priori by means of a new BLF-based tuning function and a projection operator. A variable-separable lemma is delicately embedded into the control design to extract the control terms in a linear-like fashion which not only overcomes the difficulty that virtual control signals appear in a non-affine manner, but also solves the problem of actuator faults. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 is the foundation of the European University on Responsible Consumption and Production consortium (EURECA-PRO). This article introduces the eight EURECA-PRO partner universities: Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria), Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), Technical University of Crete (Greece), University of León (Spain), Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (Germany), University of Petroşani (Romania), and Hasselt University (Belgium). In addition, each university’s role within the alliance and unique research and study programmes are outlined. The synergy created by EURECA-PRO enables the pursuit of an ambitious research agenda with five research "Lighthouse Missions" as well as the implementation of joint study programmes. © 2022, The Author(s).
