Group support systems are becoming quite popular. They are also instigating large groups of people into collaborative practices. But research on large group collaborations is still very scarce, making it difficult to assess the benefits and drawbacks. This paper describes an empirical study with a group of 48 participants who used Google Maps to accomplish a collaborative design task. The main research goal was to obtain quantitative and qualitative insights about large group collaborations. Various dimensions of group collaboration were studied, including group size, shared awareness, task monitoring, and coordination. The obtained results indicate that large groups face very significant coordination problems and difficulties converging and handling the volume of information. But the study also points out that large group collaborations stimulate participation and task synergy through positive reinforcements, constant feedback and peer pressure.

This paper proposes a new approach to identification of the poles in a linear system from frequency domain data. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements can be expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry, leading to a nice geometric interpretation of the identification algorithm. Convergence results in hyperbolic metrics will be given. The full procedure is illustrated by simulation examples.

This article explores, through a case study, measures of energy efficiency in data processing centers. An analysis of this case demonstrates how the design criteria could improve the rate of consumption in IT centers, which is currently the second most contaminating industry on the planet, and is the responsible for 2% of CO2 emissions, surpassed only by the aeronautical industry. The present and future situation of IT center energy consumption and associated environmental effects is analyzed, and also looks at how state-of-the-art technology, correctly implemented, could ensure significant rationalization of data processing center energy consumption. The article will examine optimization techniques, specific problems and case studies.

Robust H ∞ output feedback control problem for a class of switched linear discrete-time systems possessing norm-bounded uncertainty and time-varying delay is investigated. A switched dynamic output feedback controller is sought that can robust exponentially stabilize and reduce to a prescribed level the effect of disturbance input on the controlled output in the closed loop. A delay-dependent linear matrix inequality based sufficient condition for the problem to be solvable is derived via the switched Lyapunov functions. controller design is performed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. An illustrative example along with simulation results is given to demonstrate the validity of these novel derivations.

In this paper, a low power and fast DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) using multiplier-less method is presented with a new modified FGA (Flow-Graph Algorithm), which is derived from our previously presented FGA of DCT based on Loeffler algorithm. The multiplier-less method is based on the replacement of multiplications with a minimum number of additions and shifts. The proposed FGA is performed and compared to a previous one. The results of FPGA implementations on Altera Cyclone II show the increase of the maximum frequency, the decrease of the resources usage and the reduction of the dynamic power by 7.2 % at 120 MHz of clock frequency with a new proposed FGA algorithm. Another comparison with recent published results has been done and proves the efficiency of the proposed FGA.

The robust H ∞ control problem for a class of uncertain switched linear systems by using the variable structure control is investigated. A robust H ∞ single sliding surface is shown to exist as long as a convex combination of the subsystems of the switched system is robustly stabilizable with disturbance attenuation level γ. A switching law is constructed via the single Lyapunov function technique. Variable structure controllers of subsystems are designed so as the resulting closed-loop system guarantees the robust H ∞ performance. An illustrative example and simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
