The paper gives an insight of the work done so far in modelling and implementation of user adapted software systems or adaptive web sites. We introduce a five layer framework which gives to our adaptive web based system flexibility, expressiveness, modularity and interoperability. The work so far has been concentrated in the first four layers of the framework concerning data representation, representation of knowledge as well as development of adaptation algorithm for such systems. Initial experimental results on adaptation show good performance of the algorithm for both per-user based adaptation and adaptation for groups of users. The findings also indicate that the approach is suitable for generic adaptive web-based systems. Copyright. © 2010 ACM.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of sequence alignment. The parallel computational model is based on mpiBlast algorithm, data decomposition and manager-worker algorithmic paradigm utilizing massage passing based on MPI and is verified on the basis of flat parallel program implementation on a supercomputer BlueGene/P.

The automatic programming system has been considered by means of which it becomes easier to carry out traditional programming stages. There is discussed both recursive forms: parallel, interrecursion and recursion of high level that exist for functional programming languages and induction methods for the purpose of their verification. The way how to present imperative languages easy and double cycles by means of recursion forms is shown, the possibility of verification has been studied for each recursion form.

This paper deals with an analysis of applicability, capabilities, benefits and pitfalls of using a virtual potential field approach to autonomously planning trajectories in non-communicating autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV-s). Virtual potentials represent an approach to this problem with cross-layer design features. Examples of different layers of control that can be achieved with the same fundamental approach are: obstacle-avoidance, energy-optimal trajectories, forming up with other moving agents, controlled formation fragmentation into well-posed sub-formation etc. This paper shows, on the basis of extensive simulated experiments, that such a trajectory planner based on virtual potentials, guarantees good extendibility, scalability and performance in a hard-real-time hardware-in-the-loop system.

The work presented in this paper deals with the process of transfer function identification by using self-oscillation method (autotuning identification method). The algorithm is given in a general matrix form and some modifications are introduced. The modifications of the algorithm include augmentation of the initial algorithm for Type k systems, systems with delays and discrete-time systems. The paper also includes simulation examples which describe the introduced modifications. Apart from being rather simple, this method is applicable to real systems. Its greatest advantage is quick identification of a transfer function (depends on the system).

Most current Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) examine all data features to detect intrusion. Also existing intrusion detection approaches have some limitations, namely impossibility to process a large number of audit data for realtime operation, low detection and recognition accuracy. To overcome these limitations, we apply modular neural network models to detect and recognize attacks in computer networks. They are based on the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) neural networks and multilayer perceptrons (MLP). PCA networks are employed for important data extraction and to reduce high dimensional data vectors. We present two PCA neural networks for feature extraction: linear PCA (LPCA) and nonlinear PCA (NPCA). MLP is employed to detect and recognize attacks using feature-extracted data instead of original data. The proposed approaches are tested with the help of KDD-99 dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the designed models are promising in terms of accuracy and computational time for real world intrusion detection.

An approach to development of fine-grain parallel algorithm of artificial neural network training using parallelization of computational operations of each elementary neuron is presented in this paper. A training algorithm of back error propagation is described and parallel section of the algorithm is developed. The results of experimental research of the parallel algorithm are given using analysis of parallelization speedup and efficiency on parallel computer Origin 300.

The development of electronic commerce systems is subject to different conditions than that of conventional software systems. This includes the introduction of new activities to the development process and the removal of others. An adapted process must cope with important idiosyncrasies of EC system development: EC systems typically have a high degree of interaction, which makes factors like ergonomics, didactics and psychology especially important in the development of user interfaces. Typically, they also have a high degree of integration with existing software systems such as legacy or groupware systems. Integration techniques have to be selected systematically in order not to endanger the whole software development process. This article describes the development of an EC system and it generalizes salient features of the software process used. The result is a process model that can be used for other highly integrative EC system development projects. The processes described are determined by short process lifecycles, by an orientation towards integration of legacy systems and by a strict role-based cooperation approach

In modern circuit design, the Shannon decomposition of switching functions is widely used. On the other hand, in information theory of telecommunication, the Shannon entropy used as a measure to represent the information in numerical values, is a key notion. In this paper, we relate these two concepts, belonging to different areas, into an approach to the minimisation of exclusive-or sum-of-products (AND/EXOR) expressions for switching functions. The Shannon decomposition, and the closely related Davio decomposition for AND/EXOR expressions are interpreted in terms of basic concepts in the information theory. Thanks to that, we have proposed an entropy based strategy for minimization of AND/EXOR expressions. We have provided a comparison and an experimental verification of this strategy with some known heuristic minimization strategies using benchmarks. In some cases, our program Info-EXOR produces extremely better results. Moreover, the information theory interpretation of classical decomposition of switching functions offers a new point of view to the existing design styles. © 1999 IEEE.

He completed his bachelor of science degree in aeropace and ocean engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 and his master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 1990. Mr. Dirlik recently completed a master of science program in applied physics at The Johns Hopins University and currently works in the Radar Cross Section and Target Physics Branch of the Signatures Directorate at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corderoke Division. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). He was a visiting scientist at NASA Langley Research Center for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Applied Structural Optimzatiom at the University of Siegen in Germany (spring 1992) and the Design Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1990). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent Engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.
