Since fairness deals with the quality of distributing the jobs and creates an ambience that is free from any discrimination, any distribution management problem must take fairness issue into consideration. Again, since the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is also a distribution management problem, any VRP solving algorithm must consider the fairness when solutions are explored. However, most of the proposed VRP solving algorithms do not take this issue into consideration. In this paper, we raise this issue with sufficient evidences. In this course of action, following contributions are made in this paper: i) fairness issue is raised analytically, and to support this, an extensive simulation campaign is performed, ii) the VRP is discussed through a practical application, namely Garbage Collection Problem (GCP), and later it is mathematically formulated, iii) a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed to explore feasible solutions for the given application (i.e., GCP), and iv) some future research directives are noted, which will help the researchers to extend this work.

Unnecessary handoff is one of the key issues in mobile wireless network, since it consumes the network's resources that degrades the performance of the network. Handoff appears when the Receive Signal Strength (RSS) of a mobile node becomes below threshold value (i.e., an acceptable level of RSS for ensuring communication). Subsequently, the mobile node starts scanning to discover a new RSS from neighbors Access Point (AP) to keep continuing the communication. However, traditional handoff algorithm is not accurate due to only depend on the RSS. It is affected by many factors (e.g., shadowing, scattering, reflection, etc.) that initiate unnecessary handoff decision. In this paper, a new technique is proposed to mitigate the unnecessary handoff. The simulation result confirms the effectiveness of the proposal. © 2015 IEEE.

An information cascade occurs when a person observes the actions of others and then engages in the same acts. Cascades may break out if a large population of nodes in the network get affected. The outbreaks of cascades will often bring influential events, which leads to an open research problem: how to accurately predict the cascading outbreaks in social networks? Although there have been some existing works on cascading outbreak prediction, they ignore the structure information of cascades. In this paper, we propose to use subcascades as features for cascade outbreak prediction. We use frequent sequential pattern mining to extract subcascades and then propose a max-margin based classifier to select at most B features for prediction. The proposed model is empirically evaluated on both synthetic and real-world networks. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Gait recognition is a rising biometric technology which aims to distinguish people purely through the analysis of the way they walk, while the problem is that the dimensionality of the gait data is too high, so it is necessary to carry on dimensionality reduction task. Up to date, in the area of computer vision and pattern recognition, various dimensionality reduction algorithms have been employed for gait data, including the conventional vector representation based methods principal components analysis (PCA) and, locality preserving projection (LPP), and the recently proposed multi-linear subspace learning based approaches such as multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA). In this paper, inspired by the advantages of the tensor representation and manifold learning, we propose a novel sparse tensor discriminative locality alignment for human gait feature representation and dimensionality reduction algorithm, and sub-sequently apply the refined feature for gait recognition by a lazy classifier of the KNN. The proposed method adopts sparse multi-way projection based on the high-order version of discriminative locality alignment, by which the class separability is enhanced and the potential model overfitting is simultaneously avoided. Extensive experiments on the University of South Florida (USF) HumanID Gait Database show that the proposed method achieves better recognition rate compared with some existing classical dimensionality reduction algorithms.

Preference relations are very useful to express decision makers' preferences over alternatives in the process of decision-making. However, multiple self-confidence levels are not considered in existing preference relations. In this study, we propose a new type of preference relations: fuzzy preference relations with self-confidence. A linear programming model is proposed for estimating priority vectors of this new type of preference relations. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the linear programming model, and a comparative analysis is used to show the influence of self-confidence levels on the decision-making results.

The adaptive tutoring system is one of the applications in teaching and learning processes, providing worldwide accessibility and all-day availability. Apparently, studies on user preference across gender for adaptive tutoring systems remain scarce among university users in Malaysia. With the aim of describing the differences between genders in user preferences for the method of gaining information, online games, online movies, online music, pictures, as well as colors of the adaptive tutoring system, this paper used quantitative methods through data gathering for finding the results of this study. Sixty-eight respondents were chosen from among academicians, administrative staff and students of a public university in Malaysia. Descriptive analysis of the data shows that there exists a pattern of different preferences for adaptive tutoring systems across gender. This paper provides data supporting the need to design different interfaces for male and female users.

Technical Debt Management (TDM) has drawn the attention of software industries during the last years, including embedded systems. However, we currently lack an overview of how practitioners from this application domain perceive technical debt. To this end, we conducted a multiple case study in the embedded systems industry, to investigate: (a) the expected life-time of components that have TD, (b) the most frequently occurring types of TD in them, and (c) the significance of TD against run-time quality attributes. The case study was performed on seven embedded systems industries (telecommunications, printing, smart manufacturing, sensors, etc.) from five countries (Greece, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, and Finland). The results of the case study suggest that: (a) maintainability is more seriously considered when the expected lifetime of components is larger than ten years, (b) the most frequent types of debt are test, architectural, and code debt, and (c) in embedded systems the run-time qualities are prioritized compared to design-time qualities that are usually associated with TD. The obtained results can be useful for both researchers and practitioners: the former can focus their research on the most industrially-relevant aspects of TD, whereas the latter can be informed about the most common types of TD and how to focus their TDM processes.

African Buffalo Optimization: A Swarm-Intelligence Technique

This paper proposes a new optimization technique called the African Buffalo Optimization. The African Buffalo Optimization (ABO) draws its inspiration from the behavior of African buffalos in the vast African forests and savannahs. African buffalos are a wild species of domestic cattle and are always mobile tracking the rainy seasons in different parts of Africa in search of lush green pastures to satisfy their large appetites. Our interest is in their organizational ability through two basic sounds in search of solutions. Experiments carried out using this novel algorithm in solving some benchmark Travelling Salesman's Problem when compared with the results from some popular optimization algorithms show that the ABO was not only able to obtain better solutions but at a faster speed.

The advancement of computer and Internet technologies have brought teaching and learning activities to a new dimension. Learners were virtually moved out from their classrooms to a new learning environment where learning contents and materials were delivered electronically. This new environment, which is called e-learning environment uses the web and other Internet technologies to enhance teaching and learning experience. The success and failure of any e-learning system fall on how secure the system is. Security of an e-learning system is very important so that the information contained in the system is not compromised. However no matter how secure an e-learning system is the security threats always fall on human factor. Human is identified as the weakest link in information security and lack of security awareness such as password sharing will compromise the security of e-learning system. This paper studies the awareness level in information security among e-learning users, particularly students at Higher Education Institution. The study focuses on evaluating awareness level, perception and behavior of e-learning users from International Islamic University Malaysia. Results of this study helps the university authority in preparing effective and specific awareness program in e-learning security for their students.
