The articles in this special section is to find out what lies beyond the fascination toward robots that we have inherited from popular culture, the pleasure of learning with robots derived from the gamification of learning, and the strong appeal for robotics technologies given by its aura of innovation. Are there authentic ways in which robotics can improve education, and what affordances does robotics, in particular, provide for such educational transformation? Indeed, one of the biggest gray areas of educational robotics concerns the lack of empirical evidence on the educational (pedagogical as well as psychological) effectiveness of robots that is related to both the lack of standardized evaluation criteria and the methodological difficulties in conducting sound scientific tests.

Random asynchronous iterations in distributed coordination algorithms

Distributed coordination algorithms (DCA) carry out information processing processes among a group of networked agents without centralized information fusion. Though it is well known that DCA characterized by an SIA (stochastic, indecomposable, aperiodic) matrix generate consensus asymptotically via synchronous iterations, the dynamics of DCA with asynchronous iterations have not been studied extensively, especially when viewed as stochastic processes. This paper aims to show that for any given irreducible stochastic matrix, even non-SIA, the corresponding DCA lead to consensus successfully via random asynchronous iterations under a wide range of conditions on the transition probability. Particularly, the transition probability is neither required to be independent and identically distributed, nor characterized by a Markov chain. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Bidirectional controlled quantum teleportation using eight-qubit quantum channel in noisy environments

In this work, a novel protocol is proposed for bidirectional controlled quantum teleportation (BCQT) in which a quantum channel is used with the eight-qubit entangled state. Using the protocol, two users can teleport an arbitrary entangled state and a pure two-qubit state (QBS) to each other simultaneously under the permission of a third party in the role of controller. This protocol is based on the controlled-not operation, appropriate single-qubit (SIQ) UOs and SIQ measurements in the .. and ..-basis. Reduction of the predictability of the controllerfs qubit (QB) by the eavesdropper and also, an increasing degree of freedom of controller for controlling one of the users or both are other features of this protocol. Then, the proposed protocol is investigated in two typical noisy channels include the amplitude-damping noise (ADN) and the phase-damping noise (PDN). And finally, analysis of the protocol shows that it only depends on the amplitude of the initial state and the decoherence noisy rate (DR). Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search for Optimal Fuzzified Joint Reconfiguration and Capacitor Placement in Electric Distribution Systems

Network reconfiguration and capacitor allocation are two valuable tools to optimally manage distribution systems. In the present work, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the joint problem of reconfiguration and capacitor placement in distribution systems. The multi-objective problem is formulated to minimize objective functions of total network power losses, bus voltage violation, and branch loading deviations subject to different technical and operational constraints. To enhance exploration ability, the Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm is strengthened with Particle Swarm Optimization capabilities to develop the Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm, which is applied to solve the proposed problem. Objective functions are fuzzified and aggregated by a geometric mean operator to have the same scales. The proposed joint optimization problem is solved with the introduced Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm in two different case studies of balanced and unbalanced test systems. According to obtained results that are compared with some well-known evolutionary algorithms, the superiority of the Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm is confirmed in terms of solution optimality and convergence speed.

High-frequency oscillations in the atmosphere above a sunspot umbra

We use high spatial and temporal resolution observations, simultaneously obtained with the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, to investigate the high-frequency oscillations above a sunspot umbra. A novel time–frequency analysis method, namely the synchrosqueezing transform (SST), is employed to represent their power spectra and to reconstruct the high-frequency signals at different solar atmospheric layers. A validation study with synthetic signals demonstrates that SST is capable to resolving weak signals even when their strength is comparable with the high-frequency noise. The power spectra, obtained from both SST and the Fourier transform, of the entire umbral region indicate that there are significant enhancements between 10 and 14 mHz (labeled as 12 mHz) at different atmospheric layers. Analyzing the spectrum of a photospheric region far away from the umbra demonstrates that this 12 mHz component exists only inside the umbra. The animation based on the reconstructed 12 mHz component in AIA 171 Å illustrates that an intermittently propagating wave first emerges near the footpoints of coronal fan structures, and then propagates outward along the structures. A time–distance diagram, coupled with a subsonic wave speed (∼ 49 km s−1), highlights the fact that these coronal perturbations are best described as upwardly propagating magnetoacoustic slow waves. Thus, we first reveal the high-frequency oscillations with a period around one minute in imaging observations at different height above an umbra, and these oscillations seem to be related to the umbral perturbations in the photosphere. Rapid increase of the renewable energy share in electricity production requires optimization and flexibility of the power consumption side. Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) have a large potential for regulation service provision. Economic model predictive control (MPC) is an advanced control method which can be used to syncronize the power consumption with undispatchable renewable electricity production. Thermal behavior of TCLs can be described by linear models based on energy balance of the system. In some cases, parameters of the model may be time-varying. In this work, we present a modified economic MPC based on linear parameter-varying model. In particular, we provide an exact transformation from a standard economic MPC formulation to a linear program. We assume that the variables influencing the model parameters are known (predictable) for the prediction horizon of the controller. As a case study, we present control system that minimizes operational cost of swimming pool heating system, where parameters of the model depend on the weather forecast. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to deal with this kind of systems.

Nowadays, a lot of IT personnel have psychological distress. Meanwhile, counselors to help them are lack in number. To solve the problem, we proposed a counseling agent (CA) called CRECA (context respectful counseling agent). CRECA listens to clients and promotes their reflection context respectfully namely in a context preserving way. This agent can be enhanced using a body language called "unazuki" in Japanese, a kind of "nodding" to greatly promote dialogue, often accompanying "un-un" (meaning "exactly") of Japanese onomatopoeia. This body language is expected to significantly help represent empathy or entire approval. In this paper, the agent is integrated with such a "unazuki" or "dialog promotion nodding" robot to continue the conversation naturally or context respectfully towards clients' further reflection. To realize such "unazuki", the robot nods twice at each end of dialog sentence input by clients. The experimental evaluation proves such nodding is effective in counseling. © 2017 IEEE.

T-overlap query is the basis of set similarity query and has been applied in many important fields. Most existing approaches employ a pruning-and-verification framework, thus in low efficiency. Modern GPU has much higher parallelism as well as memory bandwidth than CPU and can be used to accelerate T-overlap query. In this paper, we use hash segmentation to divide inverted lists into segments, then design an efficient inverted index called GHSII on GPU using hash segmentation. Based on GHSII, a new segmentation parallel T-overlap algorithm, GSPS, is proposed. GSPS uses segment at a time to scan segments and uses shared memory to decrease the number of accesses to device memory. Furthermore, an optimized algorithm called GSPS-TLLO using a heuristic query order is proposed to solve the problem of load *** are carried out on two real datasets and the results show that GSPS-TLLO outperforms the state-of-the-art GPU parallel T-overlap algorithms.

Focusing on the background of utilizing magnetic compass in the air-ground amphibious robot system,this paper explores error compensation of magnetic compass in the process of moving on the ground and the *** on the error analysis on the air-ground amphibious robot magnetic compass,this paper applies the ellipsoid fitting algorithm for error identification of this model coefficient and thus calibration of magnetic compass is realized in the ***,through the processing of three sets of data together with the comparison of the traditional empirical Calibration methods,the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.
