Solar activity has various influences on the global environment, in particular on the magnetic storm and the likelihood of natural disasters. Specifically, it may have serious impacts on the Earth such as failure of satellite communication and navigation (GPS), satellite damage, increased radiation exposure to astronauts, geomagnetic storm and aurora, and power plant failures causing more serious disaster. For a precise forecast of larger scale solar flares causing serious disaster, it is important to improve the space weather forecast, which is basically a daily forecast of the solar flare. In our work so far, a machine-learning algorithm called Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to forecast the space weather. Here, we propose to extend this technology by integrating Case Based Genetic Algorithm (CBGA) for a more precise forecast and present an evaluation of this approach. Experimental evaluation shows that triple mutation rate on the slowdown of evolution in our Genetic Algorithm improves considerably (e.g. another 5%) more than original mutation rate in the True Skill Statistics TSS.

This paper discusses driver's emergency avoiding behavior while he or she is driving a car in a rural area. Based on behavioral data obtained from an experiment conducted in France with a high-fidelity driving simulator, the authors analyzed the driver behavior just before the collision. The results showed that the drivers tended to choose a “rational” behavior to avoid the collision by using the available visual cues even though the situation is extremely time critical, i.e., the time to collision was only approximately 1.5 seconds.

This article explores the influence of the concentrated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas on the different Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulations used for Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) links. In this work, the OWC consisted of a laser diode, a photodetector, and a transmission medium. The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) unit created and evaluated the PSK modulations. This unit modulated the laser diode on the transmitter side and demodulated the data which were received by the photodetector on the receiver side. The CO 2 gas was emitted as a consequence of sublimation of the solid carbon dioxide in hot water. The measurements were done in a closed box in laboratory. The CO 2 gas is a one element of smog which pollutes cities now and then. Our experimental results with CO 2 gas could help to choose a suitable modulation scheme for OWC which are installed in cities with smog-polluted atmospheric conditions.

This paper describes the mathematical modeling of the optimal power flow problem. The purpose is to optimize the power flow for a whole day, for a system in which several distributed generators (DGs) have been added. There are two objective functions which are minimized, the generation cost and the total power losses of the system, while satisfying equality and inequality constraints. The optimization is performed for different DGs and load scale factors. The other generators from the system have a 1 scale factor.
