In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.

A five-dimensional (5D) controlled two-stage Colpitts oscillator is introduced and analyzed. This new electronic oscillator is constructed by considering the well-known two-stage Colpitts oscillator with two further elements (coupled inductors and variable resistor). In contrast to current approaches based on piecewise linear (PWL) model, we propose a smooth mathematical model (with exponential nonlinearity) to investigate the dynamics of the oscillator. Several issues, such as the basic dynamical behaviour, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency spectra of the oscillator, are investigated theoretically and numerically by varying a single control resistor. It is found that the oscillator moves from the state of fixed point motion to chaos via the usual paths of period-doubling and interior crisis routes as the single control resistor is monitored. Furthermore, an experimental study of controlled Colpitts oscillator is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit is proposed for the investigations of the complex dynamics behaviour of the system. A very good qualitative agreement is obtained between the theoretical/numerical and experimental results.

Controlled amounts of chemically synthesised gold (Au) nanoclusters were deposited onto tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanostructured thin films as sensors for hydrogen. The Au/WO3 thin films were characterised by XPS, XRD, SEM and TEM. Performance of Au/WO3 films was tested at operating temperatures varying from room temperature to 450 C. It was demonstrated that Au metal loading plays an important role in defining enhancement of the sensor response towards hydrogen. "Less is more" principle applies to the reported here sensors as materials made using lower concentration of Au nanoclusters demonstrated significantly better response. HRTEM images of the Au/WO3 thin films provide evidence that the more active sensors are enriched with smaller Au nanoparticles (≤5 nm). Fast response towards H2 within a wide range of industrially relevant concentrations, excellent baseline stability and signal reproducibility at optimized operating temperature demonstrate feasibility of this novel approach toward fabrication of sensors. © 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Trees are ubiquitous in natural environment and realistic models of tree are also indispensable in computer graphics and virtual reality domains. However, their complexity in geometry and topology make it a great challenge for photo-realistic tree reconstruction. Since tree trunk is the preliminary structure of trees, its modeling is a critical step which plays an important role in tree modeling. Many existing methods focus on the overall resemblance of tree branches but omit the local geometry details. In this paper, we perform unilateral scanning of real-world trees and propose an approach that could reconstruct trees from incomplete point clouds. The core of our method contains four parts: local optimal segmentation of tree branch, skeletal point and lines extraction from unilateral branch, the cross-section construction of tree branch, and final tree branch surface generation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method which could keep realistic shape of trees. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms with multiple autonomous robots have received considerable attention in recent years. In general, SLAM algorithms use odometry information and measurements from exteroceptive sensors of robots. The accuracy of these measurements and the performance of the corresponding SLAM algorithm directly affect the overall success of the system. This paper presents comparative performance evaluations of three Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Compressed Extended Kalman Filter (CEKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). Specifically, it focuses on their SLAM performances and processing time requirements. To show the effect of CPU power on the processing time of SLAM algorithms, two notebooks and a netbook with different specifications have been used. Comparative simulation results show that processing time requirements are consistent with the computational complexities of SLAM algorithms. The results we obtained are consistent with the CPU power tests of independent organizations and show that higher processing power decreases processing time accordingly. The results also show that CEKF is more suitable for outdoor SLAM applications where there are a lot of natural and artificial features. © 2012 IEEE.

Most traditional drying processes are poorly adapted to the requirements of standardization because the heat sources are natural. A typical example is fish smoking / drying using traditional biomass dryer. In order to improve the performance of this type of dryer, a heat exchanger in stainless steel is integrated to recover waste and excess heat from the main source. Water circulates in the piping thanks to a centrifugal pump powered by a photovoltaic source. This fluid is stored in a tank with insulation improved by sawdust treated with formalin. The stored heat is later conducted back through the same piping to the drying chamber when the fire from wood is off. Thus, the drying of fish may be continued both day and night. A better yield is obtained by adding glycerol to water for 1/10 of total volume. © 2012 Dunarea de Jos University.

Performance results of qualitative optical flow processing integrated in fuzzy logic-based behavioral mobile robot control

This paper reports performance results of qualitative optical flow processing integrated in a fuzzy logic-based behavioral mobile robot control system. The quality and noise robustness of qualitative optical flow processing is improved by a novel optical flow outlier detection filter. This filter performs a qualitative detection of outliers based on comparison between an optical flow vector and the average value of an optical flow pattern related to the considered vector. The performance of qualitative optical flow processing is tested and demonstrated successfully through experiments in a real office environment.

The main idea behind this project is to provide a unified platform which will cover a complete process for embedded systems learning. A modular approach is considered for skills practice through supporting individualization in learning. This platform shall facilitate a novel development of universal approach in creative learning environment and knowledge management that encourage use of ICT. New learning model is challenging the education of engineers in embedded systems design through real-time experiments that stimulate curiosity with ultimate goal to support students to understand and construct their personal conceptual knowledge based on experiments. In addition to the technological approach, the use of cognitive theories on how people learn will help students to achieve a stronger and smarter adaptation of the subject. Applied methodology will be evaluated from the scientific point of view in parallel with the implementation in order to feedback results to the R&D.
