Network flow problems are among the most important ones in graph theory. Since there are many well-known polynomial algorithms for solving the classical Maximum Flow Problem, we, instead of summarising them, focus on ...

We extend a `surrogate problem' approach that is developed for a class of stochastic discrete optimization problems so as to tackle the global signal settings and traffic assignment combined problem. We compare a stochastic method based on the surrogate approach, called Surrogate Method (SM), with a Projected Gradient Algorithm (PGA), which uses the Armijo rule for the step size estimation routine. Numerical experiments conducted on a test network show that the surrogate method converges to a really small area and it finds much more efficient solutions.

The underrepresentation of women in engineering programmes continues to be a world-wide phenomenon. The proportion of women has traditionally been especially low in the fields of electronics, computer science and mechanical engineering. This problem was noticed in the Department of Electrical and Communications engineering at Helsinki University of Technology in the late nineties. A series of gender and technology education projects was launched in 2001-2007. The projects were financed by the European Social Fund and the State Provincial Office of Southern Finland. In these projects, the first step was to consider the gender differences in both recruiting and retaining processes. Next, the aim was to create a guideline for solutions for persuading the best candidates to study our field and improve the working environment in a way that would benefit all the students, both female and male. The idea in the projects was to use our faculty as a pilot and then spread the best practises further. The main purposes of the projects were to promote female-friendly education, increase the proportion of female students, researchers and teachers as well as to develop more co-operative learning practices in curricula. Lots of activities were conducted during the projects, including interdisciplinary courses, mentoring programs, occupational coaching, elementary school co-operation, best-practice material delivery and subject-related websites. The lasting improvements that resulted, both directly and indirectly, from the projects were a well-established tutoring system, a more interdisciplinary curriculum, networking meetings for female researchers and a yearly women's day event covering the whole university as well as comprehensive school girls and alumnae. Over a million of Euros was invested in these projects and the number of participants was over 7000. The results of these projects can be seen in figures. From 2000 to 2009, the proportion of female applicants accepted into the

Online social gaming is an emerging Internet application that combines online gaming and online social networking functionality for the benefit of millions of daily users. While researchers have investigated the structure of (social) networks for decades, the activity characteristics and the community structure of online social gaming remain relatively unknown. To address this situation, in this work we investigate the BBO Fans club for online bridge. First, we introduce a method to collect and analyze data from BBO Fans and its underlying gaming platform. Our method is novel in that it addresses the lack of a strict definition of social relationship between BBO Fans players, and it defines several player types with implications on community formation and operation. Second, we use the proposed method to collect and analyze a 40-day BBO Fans dataset comprising over 140,000 unique players and over 3,000,000 unique play sessions. Third, we compare the characteristics of BBO Fans with other large social networking and online gaming applications. We find in particular that BBO Fans generates similar levels of activity as but has different community characteristics than similarly-sized games on FaceBook, the largest social network in the world.

Due to the complexity of modern distributed power generation, a conventional automation system is not always capable to provide sufficient information, so intelligent control approaches are requiring. This paper is concerned with intelligent control technologies applied to distributed power generation network. Precisely it presents a fuzzy controller based control solution, developed with Matlab that allows the implementation of different renewable energy resources (RES) in a distributed power energy network (PD) and ensures a greater stability.
