Message-passing programming interfaces are widely used when programming parallel applications. Systems such as PVM and MPI have been successful at providing the basic capabilities needed to implement parallel applications efficiently. With the advent of Java, efforts have been conducted to define a message-passing interface to be used by applications written in that language. However, current proposals have been designed to stay as close to PVM and MPI as possible, and thus fail to exploit the capabilities offered by the Java platform. This paper introduces JOINT, a message-passing programming interface for parallel applications written in Java. JOINT is designed to be simple, intuitive and to smoothly integrate with the Java environment. The paper also presents a real parallel example implemented using JOINT to illustrate the facilities given by the interface. JOINT is already implemented as part of two different distributed parallel systems: JoiN and mJoiN. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The architecture of the toolkit ESWin (Expert Systems under Windows) and hybrid expert systems supported by it are described. Knowledge representation by rules and frames is used. The possibility of keeping and extracting data from external databases by external programs is provided. Frames allow one to describe an application domain in terms of hierarchies of classes and owners. Frames consist of slots, which can be symbols, numerical or linguistic variables, or date and time. Frames can be joined with rules and procedures, processing determined events. Three types of frames are used: frame classes;frame examples, in which facts are described;and frame patterns, in which situations (events, examples, etc.) are described. Inverse fuzzy inference is used as the main method of knowledge processing. Fuzzy rules are assigned and processed, on the one hand, by using certain factors of conclusions of rules, and, on the other hand, by using linguistic variables. A user can enter both numerical and fuzzy symbol values of corresponding slots using linguistic variables. The ESWin software consists of three modules - a shell-interpreter, an editor-constructor of knowledge bases and a program for the viewing and diagnosis of knowledge bases. © 2001 IEEE.

This contribution deals with sensor networking concepts, namely the IEEE 1451 smart transducer interface architecture. The paper reviews that approach from the viewpoint of connecting sensors to the Internet. The kernel of the paper focuses on the application of the discussed architecture for a distributed pressure measurement system, stressing both the intra-system and Internet connectivity issues. The next sections discuss in more detail the IEEE 1451 smart transducer interface for sensors and actuators as an emerging, standard-based networking framework.

This paper addresses networking and traffic control problems in network systems along with the potential for introducing soft-computing applications at supervisory control level. The incentive Stackelberg strategy control concept was introduced to the networking model that comprises subsidiary systems of users and of network. A linear strategy is proposed for the elastic traffic problem, and results are demonstrated and illustrated via Kelly's (1997) example. The presented method is extended to the non-elastic traffic problem and results are also illustrated via a slightly modified Kelly example. Ways of employing combined analytical and soft-computing approaches and techniques in a hybrid framework have been investigated. A fuzzy-Petri-net supervisor is proposed to implement the strategic decision and control layer. Insofar obtained results are rather encouraging, and this research continues further towards possible implementation as well as some open theoretical issues. © 2001 IEEE.

The active surface device is a new type of automation concept to handle multiple objects with high precision. The concept consists of using a massively parallel microactuator array to generate a pressure field on a planar surface. The objects can be translated, rotated, and flipped by controlling this pressure field surrounding the objects. The architecture of the active surface device is designed in a modular manner, which allows the array to be expanded by simply adding modules to the system. A general-purpose test bed has been built to experiment with this new design. An object recognition algorithm and several control techniques have been successfully implemented to perform basic sensing and handling operations. The architecture and mechanisms of this prototype test bed and the implementation of algorithms are presented.

Snakes perform many kinds of movement that are adaptable to the environment. Utilizing the snake (its forms and motion) as a model to develop a snake-like robot that emulates a snakes' function is important for generating a new type of locomotor and expanding the possible use of robots. We developed a simulator to simulate the creeping locomotion of a snake-like robot, in which the robot dynamics is modeled and its interaction with the environment is considered through Coulomb friction. This simulator makes it possible to analyze the creeping locomotion with the normal-direction slip coupled to gliding along the tangential direction. Through the developed simulator, we investigated the snake-like robot creeping locomotion which is generated only by swinging each of the joints from side to side, and discussed the optimal creeping locomotion of the snake-like robot that is adaptable to a given environment.

Analysis of complex systems such as hierarchically structured network systems that are employed in modelling and analysis various aspects and issues of control and management in telecommunications is investigated. Theory of graphs and binary matrices appear to be most suitable tools for modelling the overall structure of complex systems, in general, and of systemic hierarchies, in particular. A systematic methodology has been developed for computer simulation analysis and detecting general hierarchies in communications networking as well as for synthesis of system hierarchies. This methodology is an improved extension of Warfield's technique. © 2001 EUCA.

To implement a visual feedback controller, it is necessary to calibrate the homogeneous transformation matrix between the robot base frame and the vision frame besides the intrinsic parameters of the vision system. The calibration accuracy greatly affects the control performance. In this paper, we address the problem of controlling a robot manipulator using visual feedback without calibrating the transformation matrix. We propose an adaptive algorithm to estimate the unknown matrix online. It is proved by the Lyapunov method that the robot motion approaches asymptotically to the desired one and the estimated matrix is bounded under the control of the proposed visual feedback controller. The performance was confirmed by simulations and experiments.
