Since proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers absolutely dominate the control engineering, numbers of different control structures and theories have been developed to enhance the efficiency of PID controllers. Thus, it is essential and inspiring to operate different PID control strategies to the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. In this paper, a novel control strategy is designed for this refrigeration system, where a feedforward compensator and a conditional integrator are utilized to compensate the disturbances and remove the steady-state error in the benchmark problem, respectively. The simulation results given in the benchmark problem show the straightforward effectiveness of the proposed control structure compared with the existing control methods. © 2018

Measurement-level fusion for OTHR network using message passing

Tracking an unknown number of targets based on multipath measurements provided by an over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) network with a statistical ionospheric model is complicated, which requires solving four subproblems: target detection, target tracking, multipath data association and ionospheric height identification. A joint solution is desired since the four subproblems are highly correlated, but suffering from the intractable inference problem of high-dimensional latent variables. In this paper, a unified message passing approach, combining belief propagation (BP) and mean-field (MF) approximation, is developed for simplifying the intractable inference. Based upon the factor graph corresponding to a factorization of the joint probability distribution function (PDF) of the latent variables and a choice for a separation of this factorization into BP region and MF region, the posterior PDFs of continuous latent variables including target kinematic state, target visibility state, and ionospheric height, are approximated by MF due to its simple MP update rules for conjugate-exponential models. With regard to discrete multipath data association which contains one-to-one frame (hard) constraints, its PDF is approximated by loopy BP. Finally, the approximated posterior PDFs are updated iteratively in a closed-loop manner, which is effective for dealing with the coupling issue among target detection, target tracking, multipath data association, and ionospheric height identification. Meanwhile, the proposed approach has the measurement-level fusion architecture due to the direct processing of the raw multipath measurements from an OTHR network, which is benefit to improving target tracking performance. It is of utmost importance for each organization to ensure the continuity of its work and the rapid recovery after an *** are classifications to assess the level of IT infrastructures according to their disaster recovery capabilities. In this paper, the authors make a critical analysis of these classifications and prove that they are obsolete and insufficient to determine that the risks associated with the operation of an IT infrastructures are covered. It is proposed to include additional indicators in assessing the sustainability of IT infrastructures against disasters that take into account not only the technical solutions applied in IT infrastructures but also the organization of its operation as well as the more frequent updating of the assessment approach in order to take into account new technologies and the current threats to the operation of an IT infrastructure. © 2018 IEEE.

Silicone Oil Damping for Quasi-static Micro Scanners with Electrostatic Staggered Vertical Comb Drives

Many applications like image projection, distance sensors or spectroscopy require high speed quasi-static operating scanners with the size of several millimeters for the laser beam guidance. Quasi-static micro scanners with electrostatic staggered vertical comb drives of sizes up to 5 mm achieve remarkable mechanical deflections of ±8 degree and eigenfrequencies of several hundred Hertz. Closed-loop control of the scanner position highly reduces parasitic eigenfrequency oscillation when driving an arbitrary trajectory like triangle or saw tooth, but requires position feedback and high performant drive electronics for real-time control. In this contribution we investigate silicone oil to attenuate undesired oscillations by passive mechanic damping. We present experimental results with different viscosity and determine the resulting system parameters such as damping coefficient, eigenfrequency and permittivity, supported by transient simulations. While the permittivity, refractive index and damping increase significantly, the deceasing eigenfrequency results in slower admissible trajectories. The overall performance is assessed and compared to the active damping approach using closed-loop control of the micro scanner operating in air. Finally, a potential packaging technology is presented.

We have considered the design of electric arc plasma installation, called plasmatron, with a vertical working chamber, enable the production of high-temperature plasma during the combustion of the plasma gas passing through the electric arc. The plasma torch is designed for utilization of carbon-containing wastes and slurries of processing industries. Famous electric arc plasma systems have some disadvantages, the main of which are the complexity of the design and the complexity of regulating the performance of the installation that produces plasma. The peculiarity of the proposed plasma torch is the effect of an external electromagnetic field on the arc. This allows the arc to be pulled out and out of the tubular housing. The equation describing the arc current change in dynamic modes is given. The experimental electric arc installation for plasma generation is considered, the results of experiments are analyzed. The role of the control and information-measuring system to ensure the normal operation of the installation is shown.

Due to its advantages like minimal trauma and a low risk of infections, the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become the standard operation technique for many surgical procedures. During this type of intervention, one of the main tasks from a technical point of view is the control of the pressure in the operation area in order to give the surgeon sufficient space to perform his actions. Because no invasive measurements are available, an extended Kalman filter incorporating the peristaltic behavior of the used medical device was developed to estimate the pressure in the operation area. This contribution focuses on the observer design while a separately designed PI controller using loop shaping was employed for validation. The proposed observer-based control structure was tested with a simulator deploying the principle of physical equivalence. © 2018 Eike Smolinski et al.

This paper describes the algorithms for guidance and control of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for a specific identification mission. The goal is to traverse several times an object of interest on the sea floor in a given geometric path in order to maximize the amount of information that can be obtained using the optical and acoustical sensors. Existing ocean currents that can be estimated using a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) have to be considered when planning the path. We will describe the overall mission scenario and suggest a possible solution, based on an adequate planning of the path in form of a lemniscate and use the “chase the rabbit” approach for path following. This approach yields stable mission execution even in the presence of a considerable ocean current. The approach is validated with a state-of-the-art AUV using live tests in a special lake that contains a current. © 2018

This work proposes dedicated hardware for an intelligent control system on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The intelligent system is represented as Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy-PI controller. The implementation uses a fully parallel strategy associated with a hybrid bit format scheme (fixed-point and other floating-point). Two hardware designs are proposed;the first one uses a single clock cycle processing architecture, and the other uses a pipeline scheme. The bit accuracy was tested by simulation with a non linear control system of robotic manipulator. The area, throughput, and dynamic power consumption of the implemented hardware are used to validate and compare the results of this proposal. The results achieved allow that the proposal hardware can use in several applications with high-throughput, low-power and ultra-low-latency restrictions such as teleportation of robot manipulators, tactile internet, industrial automation in industry 4.0, and others.
