Synthesis of batik motifs using a diffusion - generative adversarial network

This paper presents a novel approach for generating intricate Batik motifs using a modified Diffusion-Generative Adversarial Network (Diffusion-GAN) augmented with StyleGAN2-Ada. Motivated by the rich cultural heritage of Indonesian Batik, our research addresses the challenge of synthesizing high-quality, diverse patterns that capture the artistry and complexity of traditional designs. Traditional generative models often struggle with stability and fidelity in artistic synthesis. We integrate StyleGAN2-Ada and Diffusion techniques to overcome these limitations, optimizing model architecture and employing a curated Batik dataset. Evaluation metrics including Frechet Inception Distance (FID), Kernel Inception Distance (KID), precision, recall, and non-redundancy assess the quality and diversity of generated motifs. Our results demonstrate significant advancements in the realism and authenticity of synthesized Batik patterns, leveraging Diffusion-GAN to enhance detail and artistic fidelity. By exploring the intersection of deep learning and cultural art, this research contributes to the preservation and evolution of Batik as a cultural artifact. References to prior works underscore the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cultural heritage preservation, highlighting the potential of modern AI techniques to innovate within traditional art forms like Batik. In summary, this study showcases the efficacy of the proposed Diffusion-GAN methodology in synthesizing original and convincing Batik motifs, while identifying opportunities for further refinement and complexity in motif synthesis. Enhancing demand forecasting through combination of anomaly detection and continuous improvement

Demand forecasting has emerged as a crucial element in supply chain management. It is essential to identify anomalous data and continuously improve the forecasting model with new data. However, existing literature fails to comprehensively cover both aspects of anomaly detection and continuous improvement in demand forecasting. This study proposes an enhanced model to improve accuracy in the demand forecasting. The proposed model introduces a novel data handling method that incorporates an anomaly detection autoencoder, improved with anomaly correction mechanisms. The data handling approach simultaneously detects data anomalies, distinguishes between expected and unexpected anomalies, and corrects anomalous data, ensuring cleaner input for demand forecasting. Then, the proposed model employs a long short-term memory architecture for demand forecasting, enhanced with a continuous improvement method. Thus, the model not only forecasts demand but also retrains the model when the anomaly data surpasses the predetermined threshold, thereby improving the accuracy of forecasting. The results show that the proposed model outperforms other models in detecting data anomalies, achieving an average precision-recall of 0.922, a receiver operating characteristic value of 0.739, and a significance level of less than 0.05. Finally, the model exhibits superior performance in demand forecasting, with average mean squared error, root mean squared error, and mean absolute error values of 33.167, 4.347, and 1.509, respectively, all with a significance level of less than 0.05. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Depression has the potential to impact death rates, particularly when it comes to death by suicide. Inadequate diagnosis may result in a delay or unsuitable therapy, which can worsen symptoms of depression. Unaddressed or insufficiently addressed depression can result in deteriorating mental well-being, which includes a higher risk of experiencing suicidal ideation and engaging in self-destructive actions. Voice analysis can be employed to distinguish between individuals with depression and those without depression. However, the research that has been conducted on voice recognition to distinguish between depressed and non-depressed individuals keeps focusing on the use of a single dataset source as input for the classification model that is being developed. This work utilizes the Vision Transformer model and various pre-trained transformers, such as DeiT (Data-Efficient Image Transformer) and Swin Transformer, to detect depression based on voice. The objective was to create a more generic model not restricted to a specific language. Integrating Mel-spectrogram characteristics with a vision transformer-based model can enhance the efficacy of voice recognition models when dealing with multi-language data. Designing a skilled soccer team for RoboCup: exploring skill-set-primitives through reinforcement learning

The RoboCup 3D soccer simulation league serves as a competitive platform for showcasing innovation in autonomous humanoid robot agents through simulated soccer matches. Our team, FC Portugal, developed a new codebase from scratch in Python after RoboCup 2021. The team’s performance relies on a set of skills centered around novel unifying primitives and a custom, symmetry-extended version of the proximal policy optimization algorithm. Our methods have been thoroughly tested in official RoboCup matches, where FC Portugal has won the last two main competitions, in 2022 and 2023. This paper presents our training framework, as well as a timeline of skills developed using our skill-set-primitives, which considerably improve the sample efficiency and stability of skills, and motivate seamless transitions. We start with a significantly fast Sprint-Kick developed in 2021 and progress to the most recent skill set, including a multi-purpose omnidirectional walk, a dribble with unprecedented ball control, a solid kick, and a push skill. The push addresses low-level collision scenarios and high-level strategies to increase ball possession. We address the resource-intensive nature of this task through an innovative multi-agent learning approach. Finally, we release the team’s codebase to the RoboCup community, providing other teams with a robust and modern foundation upon which they can build new features. © The Author(s) 2025.

Addressing Imbalance in Health Datasets: A New Method NR-Clustering SMOTE and Distance Metric Modification

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster. An image can convey a thousand words. This statement emphasizes the importance of illustrating ideas visually rather than writing them down. Although detailed image representation is typically instructive, there are several contexts where simplification of image representations may be more informative. One way to provide an abstract representation of an object is via clip art, which is a simple graphic illustration of an object that can be included in documents or presentations. Clip art representation can be utilized in graphic design for concepts expression and daily life objects illustration. Furthermore, clip art had shown remarkable advantages when compared to real images in terms of editing and manipulation since clip art geometry can be easily edited in addition to the feasibility of storing it in a resolution-independent manner. However, it can be difficult to automatically create clip arts that resemble any object. Here, we propose a novel deep learning model, named ClipArtGAN, that utilizes Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to convert a photo of an object to its corresponding clip art. To our knowledge, this is the first GAN model based on Pix2Pix architecture that is capable of automatically generating clip art for any arbitrary object. Three training datasets were collected to train and compare two GAN models based on Pix2Pix and CycleGAN architectures. Our results demonstrate that the mean accuracy obtained using ClipArtGAN utilizing Pix2Pix outperforms that of CycleGAN by 58% and that of Google Images-based search by 54%. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of visual impairment among the elderly worldwide. This study compares deep learning-based and classical feature extraction methods for AMD classification using colour fundus images, a cost-effective imaging modality. This comparative approach aims to evaluate the performance of advanced deep learning methods against traditional computer vision approaches in generating effective feature representation. To achieve this, we compared various classical feature extraction methods alongside deep learning-based approaches, specifically VGG16 pre-trained on ImageNet, RETFound and RETFound-Green, which are foundation models pre-trained on a significant number of retinal images. The results demonstrate that combinations of classical features still obtained notable performance and even outperformed the VGG16 model pre-trained on ImageNet. These results also highlight the need for deep learning models to be trained on domain-specific data to surpass classical approaches. In this regard, the pre-trained RETFound and RETFound-Green models yielded promising outcomes for AMD classification, and the highest performance was achieved using a fine-tuned RETFound model. Furthermore, the best proposed method was compared with the state-of-the-art methods. This approach achieved competitive results on the ADAM dataset, demonstrating its robustness and effectiveness in AMD classification while utilising a significantly simpler architecture. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This study proposes an innovative diabetes prediction chatbot that utilizes large language models (LLMs) to determine the likelihood of diabetes based on specific patient inputs. Unlike conventional machine learning models and in addition to providing precise, individualized, robust prediction of diabetes augmented by the percentage of its confidence, this chatbot provides detailed text-based explanations for its individual predictions and enhances user’s understanding by retrieving and presenting similar cases using case-based reasoning techniques. Utilizing key health indicators such as hypertension status, heart disease presence, smoking history, BMI, HbA1c level, and blood glucose levels, the chatbot not only predicts the presence of diabetes but also educates users about the underlying reasons for each prediction. The system's explanation module promotes transparency and trust in the predictive process. The proposed architecture integrates the retrieval augmented generation (RAG) technique with prompt engineering across multiple LLMs, including Llama 3.1, GPT-3.5, and Gemma2. This approach augments the chatbot’s responses with contextually relevant data from similar past cases, thereby enhancing both relevance and accuracy. Furthermore, RAG minimizes LLM hallucinations while enhancing them with up-to-date, precise, personalized medical information. The objective of this chatbot is to offer healthcare professionals and patients a dependable, educational instrument for early detection of diabetes supported by transparent AI principles. This will have a positive effect on preventative healthcare measures. © 2025 IEEE.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an increasing prevalence among the elderly, making early and accurate diagnosis critical for effective intervention and management. This paper introduces an end-to-end machine learning pipeline optimized for detecting AD using multimodal data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). The study proposes an ensemble model that integrates key modalities—demographics, cognitive scores, neuropsychological assessments, and MRI data—via early fusion to enhance AD detection. Various machine learning models, including Logistic Regression, Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost, XGBoost, Support Vector Machine, and Neural Networks, are compared, and feature selection is optimized through Recursive Feature Elimination, ANOVA F-value, and mutual information methods, with mutual information showing the most efficacy. With further hyperparameter tuning, the highest accuracy is achieved at 95.85%, with Gradient Boosting as the top-performing model. Additional experiments assess and evaluate individual modality contributions, underscoring the predictive value of cognitive scores and neuropsychological features. To enhance clinical interpretability, we incorporate model explainability using LIME and SHAP, which identify key features influencing model predictions across different AD stages. Explainable AI (XAI) is essential in healthcare for providing transparency and supporting clinician confidence by highlighting which biomarkers, such as MMSE, CDRSB, and PTAU, contribute most to diagnostic outcomes. This study demonstrates classical machine learning's potential in AD diagnostics, offering a pathway to cost-effective and clinically viable models for neurodegenerative disease management. © 2025 IEEE.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) remain a crucial challenge in healthcare systems, highly contributing to patient mortality. We present an innovative smart pharmacy system that utilizes advanced large language models (LLMs) to enhance drug safety and pharmacy operational efficiency. Our system integrates real-time data from patient's prescriptions, medication databases, and electronic health records (EHR) to automate the detection of potential drug interactions, optimizing clinical decision-making and reducing ADR-related risks. The system's architecture is designed to easily manage prescription processing for patients, inventory management and control, and Pharmacist consultations through an intelligent chatbot interface. Key features include real-time tracking of medication expiration and inventory levels, an interaction checker API for identifying and mitigating risky drug combinations, and an LLM-powered chatbot for accurate data analysis and visualization. By combining advanced computational techniques with AI-driven insights, our smart pharmacy system not only improves medication safety but also eases pharmacy operations. This transformative approach holds the potential to significantly reduce ADR-related hospital admissions and enhance overall healthcare delivery. Our research underscores the vital role of AI and LLMs in modern pharmacy practice, offering an inclusive solution that integrates easily into existing healthcare infrastructures.
