Artificial intelligence has significantly contributed in the evolution of medical informatics and biomedicine, providing a variety of tools available to be exploited, from rule-based expert systems and fuzzy logic to neural networks and genetic algorithms. Moreover, familiarizing people with smartphones and the constantly growing use of medical-related mobile applications enables complete and systematic monitoring of a series of chronic diseases both by health professionals and patients. In this work, we propose an integrated system for monitoring and early notification for patients suffering from heart diseases. CardioSmart365 consists of web applications, smartphone native applications, decision support systems, and web services that allow interaction and communication among end users: cardiologists, patients, and general doctors. The key features of the proposed solution are (a) recording and management of patients′ measurements of vital signs performed at home on regular basis (blood pressure, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, weight, and height), (b) management of patients′ EMRs, (c) cardiologic patient modules for the most common heart diseases, (d) decision support systems based on fuzzy logic, (e) integrated message management module for optimal communication between end users and instant notifications, and (f) interconnection to Microsoft HealthVault platform. CardioSmart365 contributes to the effort for optimal patient monitoring at home and early response in cases of emergency.

In the last decades the explosion of Information and Communication Technologies has led to a whole new scenario concerning peoples' accessibility to new job opportunities and companies' options for employing the right person for the right job. But, is there a way to exploit today's technological advances as well as people's web presence in order to achieve this goal? In this work we present a set of techniques that makes the whole recruitment process more effective. We have implemented a system that models the candidate's CVs in HR-XML, and ranks the candidates based on AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). Finally, it presents the results to the recruiter who evaluates the top candidates and takes the final decision.

Due to increasing demand, container terminals face the challenges of increasing its service capacity and minimize the time of ships loading and unloading. The assignment of storage locations for reshuffled containers is a problem to the efficiency of container terminals operations, as a wrong assignment may result in several future reshuffles. This paper proposes a meta-heuristic based on the Clonal Selection Algorithm to minimize reshuffle when retrieving containers from a stack. The model competitiveness in accuracy and time are established by extensive numerical experiments comparing with an existing Integer Program model. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising optimization tool for the container stacking problem.

Electroencephalography is an important diagnostic tool for functional investigations of the human brain. Recent EEG measurement technologies provide high numbers of electrodes and sampling rates, which results in a considerable quantity of data. For the analysis of this EEG data, efficient signal analysis and decomposition methods are essential. In this paper a new method for spatial harmonic analysis of EEG data using the Laplacian eigenspace of the meshed surface of electrode positions is presented. The resulting eigenspace enables the spatial harmonic analysis, filtering, denoising and decomposition of EEG data. For a proof of concept, the proposed approach is applied to an 128 channel EEG recording of visual evoked potentials. A set of harmonic spatial basis functions for the EEG electrode setup is estimated. The EEG data are spatially decomposed and low pass filtered using the harmonic spatial basis functions.
