One of the advanced techniques in visual information retrieval is detection of near-duplicate fragments, where the objective is to identify images containing almost exact copies of unspecified fragments of a query image. Such near-duplicates would typically indicate the presence of the same object in images. Thus, the assumed differences between near-duplicate fragments should result either from image-capturing settings (illumination, viewpoint, camera parameters) or from the object's deformation (e.g. location changes, elasticity of the object, etc.). The proposed method of near-duplicate fragment detection exploits statistical properties of keypoint similarities between compared images. Two cases are discussed. First, we assume that near-duplicates are (approximately) related by affine transformations, i.e. the underlying objects are locally planar. Secondly, we allow more random distortions so that a wider range of objects (including deformable ones) can be considered. Thus, we exploit either the image geometry or image topology. Performances of both approaches are presented and compared. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A wide variety of programming abstractions have been developed for cyber-physical systems. These approaches provide support for the composition of cyber-physical systems from generic units of application functionality. This paper surveys the current state-of-the-art in composition mechanisms for cyber physical systems and reviews each approach in terms of its support for composition analysis, re-use and adaptation. We then review approaches for modeling and verifying cyber-physical application compositions and conclude by proposing promising research directions that will address these shortcomings. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new resource allocation algorithm for uplink OFDMA-based cooperative relay networks assuming multiple source nodes, multiple relay nodes and a single destination. The aim is to maximize the total sum of the sources data rates while guaranteeing fairness among them with different QoS requirements. Assuming perfect channel state information (CSI) at the resource allocation controller. The optimization problem is formulated such that each source is assigned a weight factor based on its QoS requirements, then the ones with high weights are given more priority to select their resources (relay stations and subcarriers) first. Once the required QoS is achieved for all sources, the weight factor for all sources will be unity. The remaining resources are allocated to the sources with maximum instantaneous rate. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the greedy and static algorithms in terms of outage probability and fairness. © 2010 IEEE.

IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee represents set of comercial standards targeted for implementation in low power wireless applications, such as wireless sensor networks. OPENZB model was used for simulation of IEEE 802.15.4 networks using OPNET Modeler. We upgraded this model by adding functionalites which enabled testing this kind of networks under real-world scenarios such as presence of hidden nodes and cluster-tree topology.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool. © 2010 IEEE.

Intelligence in engineering systems is expected to gain much more attention during the next years than presently because making interdependent decisions along contextual chains by an engineer increasingly requires reproduction of earlier decisions by other engineers. While a single decision on an object parameter or parameter group in a product structure may be influenced by several humans, humans are strictly responsible for their decisions. The only way is development of transparent intelligent engineering procedures those are capable for representation of humans. The above features of engineering tasks do not allow application of closed procedures from the conventional knowledge engineering and computational intelligence. The authors are engaged in application of knowledge based methods in intelligent engineering. This paper starts with purposeful characterizing of intelligent engineering features in current industrial product modeling systems. Following this, it discusses possibilities for adding intelligence to current product modeling processes. An earlier proposed method by the authors in modeling of human intent driven engineering objectives and contextual connections as entities to assist decisions is applied. Finally, the authors propose a possible way to capture human thinking process element in order to establish intelligent content in product models. The starting point of the proposed modeling is current modeling functionality of industrial product lifecycle management systems widely applied in aircraft, car, house appliance and other industries. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a quiz game agent who is attentive to the dynamics of multiple concurrent participants. The attentiveness of this agent is meant to be achieved by an utterance policy that determines the nature of the utterance and whether, when, and to whom to utter. Two heuristics are introduced to drive the policy: the interaction atmosphere (AT) of the participants and the participant who tends to lead the conversation (CLP) at a specifi time point. They are estimated from the activeness of the participants' face movements and acoustic information during their discussion of the answer. In order to the inherent drawback of a 2D agent that makes it difficult for multiple concurrent users to distinguish the focus of its attention, a physical pointer is also introduced. This system is then evaluated using questionnaire investigation and video data analysis. The joint results of the experiments indicated that the methods for estimating AT and CLP worked. The participants pay more attention to the agent and participate in the game more actively if the indication of the pointer is more comprehensive. Attractiveness of social network analysis as a research topic in many different disciplines is growing in parallel to the continuous growth of the Internet, which allows people to share and collaborate more. Nowadays, detection of community structures, which may be established on social networks, is a popular topic in computer Science. High computational costs and non-scalability on large-scale social networks are the biggest drawbacks of popular community detection methods. The main aim of this study is to reduce the original network graph to a maintainable size so that computational costs decrease without loss of solution quality, thus increasing scalability on such networks. In this study, we focus on Ant Colony Optimization techniques to find quasi-cliques in the network and assign these quasi-cliques as nodes in a reduced graph to use with community detection algorithms. Experiments are performed on commonly used social networks with the addition of several large-scale networks. Based on the experimental results on various sized social networks, we may say that the execution times of the community detection methods are decreased while the overall quality of the solution is preserved. © 2010 IEEE.

The use of meta-heuristics for designing efficient Grid schedulers is currently a common approach. One issue related to Grid based schedulers is their evaluation under different Grid configurations, such as dynamics of tasks and machines, task arrival, scheduling policies, etc. In this paper we present a web application that interfaces the final user with several meta-heuristics based Grid schedulers. The application interface facilities for each user the remote evaluation of the different heuristics, the configuration of the schedulers as well as the configuration of the Grid simulator under which the schedulers are run. The simulation results and traces are graphically represented and stored at the server and can retrieved in different formats such as spreadsheet form or pdf files. Historical executions are as well kept enabling a full study of use cases for different types of Grid schedulers. Thus, through this application the user can extract useful knowledge about the behavior of different schedulers by simulating realistic conditions of Grid system without needing to install and configure any specific software. © 2010 IEEE.
