Attractiveness of social network analysis as a research topic in many different disciplines is growing in parallel to the continuous growth of the Internet, which allows people to share and collaborate more. Nowadays, detection of community structures, which may be established on social networks, is a popular topic in computer Science. High computational costs and non-scalability on large-scale social networks are the biggest drawbacks of popular community detection methods. The main aim of this study is to reduce the original network graph to a maintainable size so that computational costs decrease without loss of solution quality, thus increasing scalability on such networks. In this study, we focus on Ant Colony Optimization techniques to find quasi-cliques in the network and assign these quasi-cliques as nodes in a reduced graph to use with community detection algorithms. Experiments are performed on commonly used social networks with the addition of several large-scale networks. Based on the experimental results on various sized social networks, we may say that the execution times of the community detection methods are decreased while the overall quality of the solution is preserved. © 2010 IEEE.

The use of meta-heuristics for designing efficient Grid schedulers is currently a common approach. One issue related to Grid based schedulers is their evaluation under different Grid configurations, such as dynamics of tasks and machines, task arrival, scheduling policies, etc. In this paper we present a web application that interfaces the final user with several meta-heuristics based Grid schedulers. The application interface facilities for each user the remote evaluation of the different heuristics, the configuration of the schedulers as well as the configuration of the Grid simulator under which the schedulers are run. The simulation results and traces are graphically represented and stored at the server and can retrieved in different formats such as spreadsheet form or pdf files. Historical executions are as well kept enabling a full study of use cases for different types of Grid schedulers. Thus, through this application the user can extract useful knowledge about the behavior of different schedulers by simulating realistic conditions of Grid system without needing to install and configure any specific software. © 2010 IEEE.

Assessing and achieving alignment between an organization's strategies and its IT/business functions has long been recognized as a critically important question. This paper reports on a project that seeks to overturn established management orthodoxy by establising that strategies can be adequately modeled using conceptual modeling notations and that methodological and tool support can be provided for the task of assessing and achieving alignment between the strategies of an organization and its service offerings. A key element of this enterprise has been the design of SML - the Strategy Modeling Language. This paper presents an interim report from this project that describes how a notation inspired by i* has been used to obtain the diagrammatic modeling component of SML, and how i*-like notions have been used to represent strategy decomposition (required to be able to refine strategies to a level where there is an onotlogical match between the languages used to describe strategies and services). We also comment on how i*-like notions would play a greater role in this project, as a complete model of the enterprise context is brought to bear on the alignment exercise. We provide a brief illustration, and a description of the toolkit implemented on the Eclipse platform.

An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body parts. The epidemiology of these diseases is a matter of study and discussion, with many published results worldwide. We have critically collected more than 100 publications, analyzing autoimmune diseases' frequencies in various populations and ethnic groups. Simultaneously, we developed a web application in order to host the collected data. By utilizing Microsoft Silverlight technology, we have built a multimedia web frontend, in order to support a high level visualization of the data and the mining process. In parallel we continue the data mining process and the update of our database. © 2010 IEEE.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

Domain knowledge is found to be a crucial factor in attaining quality of requirements. System analysts, who have adequate knowledge of software often don't usually understand the organizational context well. This paper, presents a novel approach that utilizes the Tropos, Software System-Business Model (SS-BM) to requirements list elicitation. In the proposed method, requirements items are mapped to SS-BM elements based on their semantic meanings. The mapped requirements list and SS-BM are analyzed in specific sequence according to multiple checking points. Problems with the requirements list are identified in the analysis process and possible improvements are proposed. Quality indicators are used to summarize the quality of requirements at the end of the elicitation process.

In pattern recognition applications with high number of input features and insufficient number of samples, the curse of dimensionality can be overcome by extracting features from smaller feature subsets. The domain knowledge, for example, can be used to group some of the features together, which are also known as "views". The features extracted from views can later be combined (i.e. stacking) to train a final classifier. In this work, we demonstrate that even very simple features such as class-distributions within clusters of each view can serve as such valuable features. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

This paper proposes a method which gives symbolic model of the interconnected linear system using the adjacency matrix which represent the system. When there exist any algebraic loops in the system, they are reduced to the self loops by the edge contraction. If the weight matrix of the self loop is nonsingular, it is removed and the symbolic state space model is obtained, otherwise the symbolic descriptor model is obtained. We introduce a new interactive graphical software tool which have been developed for modeling and simulation of control systems using the proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

The ATLAS experiment has observed 1995 Z boson candidates in data corresponding to 0.15 nb−1 of integrated luminosity obtained in the 2011 LHC Pb+Pb run at sNN=2.76 TeV. The Z bosons are reconstructed via dielectron and dimuon decay channels, with a background contamination of less than 3%. Results from the two channels are consistent and are combined. Within the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the per-event Z boson yield is proportional to the number of binary collisions estimated by the Glauber model. The elliptic anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution of the Z boson with respect to the event plane is found to be consistent with zero.
