This article studies the possibility of detecting dementia in an early stage, using nonrigid registration of MR brain scans in combination with dissimilarity-based pattern recognition techniques. Instead of focussing on the shape of a single brain structure, we take into account the shape differences within the entire brain. Imaging data was obtained from a longitudinal, population based study of the elderly. A set of 29 subjects was identified, who were asymptomatic at the time of scanning, but were diagnosed as having dementia within 0.7 to 5 years after the scan, and a set of 29 age and gender matched healthy controls were selected. Each subject was registered to all other subjects, using a nonrigid registration algorithm. Based on statistics of the deformation field in the brain, a dissimilarity measure was calculated between each pair of subjects, yielding a 58×58 dissimilarity matrix. A kNN classifier was trained on the dissimilarity matrix and the performance was tested in a leave-one-out experiment. A classification accuracy of 81% was attained (spec. 83%, sens. 79%). This demonstrates the potential of whole-brain intersubject dissimilarities to aid in early diagnosis of dementia.

This paper reports on the first steps taken in search of a solution that uses public video streams available on the Internet to address the increasing need for monitoring transportation networks with the intent of returning added value to the community, either by allowing a better understanding of the network and its needs or by feeding applications with real-time information for various purposes, such as simulation, decision-making support and updated route guidance. After the introduction of the field, we present our findings from a survey that briefly describes several works with related studies and explain the algorithms that can be adopted to get relevant information from video streams. This is followed by an analysis of the issues that may arise and the best ways to address them. Next it reports on the results achieved so far, draws some conclusions on what has been done and suggests the next steps of our research.

The most common cause of traffic accidents is arguably the driver error due to lack of attention. And it is very unlikely this is going to change soon thanks to increasingly cell-phone usage, in-car entertainment systems, and naturally the more frequent traffic jams in highly populated areas. Autonomous vehicles, such as driverless cars, are a promising approach to decrease traffic accidents, as well as congestions. To test this approach, simulations are a safer, more efficient, and cheaper way than live testing. This paper presents an approach to implement a simulator to test such vehicles. It includes a study of the state of the art in driverless car simulation and discusses on the specific objectives that this particular simulator aims to achieve in order to aid testing the interactions of multiple driverless cars in urban networks.

This paper considers problem of stabilization of the first order nonholonomic chained system using polar-like coordinates. A control method considered here can be regarded as an extension of control solution based on polar coordinate transformation in order to apply it to other system than unicycle. Presented control strategy gives possibility to obtain fast convergence of regulation errors without oscillatory behavior. A robustness of the controller in the neighborhood of the desired point is ensured via additional non-smooth techniques. In order to verify usefulness of developed control strategy simulation results are given. © 2009 EUCA.

Prevailing approaches to analyze embedded software performance either require the deployment of the software on the embedded target, which can be tedious and may be impossible in an early development phase, or rely on simulation, which can be extremely slow. We promote cross-profiling as an alternative approach, which is particularly well suited for embedded Java processors. The embedded software is profiled in any standard Java Virtual Machine in a host environment, but the generated cross-profile estimates the execution time on the target. We implemented our approach in the customizable cross-profiler CProf, which generates calling-context cross-profiles. Each calling-context stores dynamic metrics, such as the estimated CPU cycle consumption on the target. We visualize the generated calling-context cross-profiles as ring charts, where callee methods are represented in segments surrounding the caller's segment. As the size of each segment corresponds to the relative CPU consumption of the corresponding calling-context, the visualization eases the location of performance bottlenecks in embedded Java software, revealing hot methods, as well as their callers and callees, at one glance.

Most processors are used in embedded systems, where the processor architectures are diverse due to optimizations for different application domains. The main challenge for embedded system processors is the right balance between performance and chip size, which directly relates to cost. An early estimation of the performance for a new design is of paramount importance. In this paper we propose cross-profiling for that performance estimation, which can be accomplished very early in the design phase. We evaluate our approach in the context of a Java processor for embedded systems using cross-profiling on a standard desktop Java virtual machine. We explore the performance impact of various processor design choices and optimizations, such as different caches strategies or pipeline organizations, and come up with an improved processor design that yields speedups of up to 40% on standard Java benchmarks. Comparing the generated cross-profiles with the execution of benchmarks in real hardware confirms that our approach is sound.

The current work addresses the unifi cation of Electronic Health Records related to cervical cancer into a single medical knowledge source, in the context of the EU-funded ASSIST research project. The project aims to facilitate the research for cervical precancer and cancer through a system that virtually unifi es multiple patient record repositories, physically located in different medical centers/hospitals, thus, increasing fl exibility by allowing the formation of study groups "on demand" and by recycling patient records in new studies. To this end, ASSIST uses semantic technologies to translate all medical entities (such as patient examination results, history, habits, genetic profi le) and represent them in a common form, encoded in the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The current paper presents the knowledge elicitation approach followed, towards the defi nition and representation of the disease's medical concepts and rules that constitute the basis for the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The proposed approach constitutes a paradigm for semantic integration of heterogeneous clinical data that may be applicable to other biomedical application domains.

The Permanent Magnet method for measuring critical current density in high-temperature superconducting thin film is numerically and experimentally investigated. Numerical results show that the critical current density is approximately proportional to the maximum repulsive force. Furthermore, the maximum repulsive force increases as the value of diameter of permanent magnet increases. These tendency is also observed in the experimental investigation. Finally, the spatial distributions of the shielding current density are reproduced by the system experimentally. © 2009 IEEE.

The Italica Project is the implementation of an Electronic Health Record system at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires. The present work shows the implementation of a Medical Signal Grid Repository module and its integration to the Italica Project. We also describe the architecture of that module and explain the design decisions taken for its construction. The integration to the preexisting system is also presented, together with the difficulties that arose from the insertion of a data grid in an environment not used to this technology. Several issues about the security and reliability of the medical data are treated as well. In this paper we also discuss the use of the grid repository as a starting point for the development of distributed processing applications. ©2009 IEEE.
