Privacy-preserving explainable AI: a survey

As the adoption of explainable AI(XAI) continues to expand, the urgency to address its privacy implications intensifies. Despite a growing corpus of research in AI privacy and explainability, there is little attention on privacy-preserving model explanations. This article presents the first thorough survey about privacy attacks on model explanations and their countermeasures. Our contribution to this field comprises a thorough analysis of research papers with a connected taxonomy that facilitates the categorization of privacy attacks and countermeasures based on the targeted explanations. This work also includes an initial investigation into the causes of privacy leaks. Finally, we discuss unresolved issues and prospective research directions uncovered in our analysis. This survey aims to be a valuable resource for the research community and offers clear insights for those new to this domain. To support ongoing research, we have established an online resource repository, which will be continuously updated with new and relevant findings.

Automating skin cancer screening: a deep learning

Skin cancer presents in various forms, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and melanoma. Established risk factors include ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure from solar or artificial sources, lighter skin pigmentation, a history of sunburns, and a family history of the disease. Early detection and prompt intervention are crucial for achieving a favorable prognosis. Traditionally, treatment modalities include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Recent advancements in immunotherapy have revolutionized skin cancer diagnosis, but manual identification remains time-consuming. Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown potential in skin cancer classification, leading to automated screening methods. To support dermatologists, we improved the model for classifying images. This model is able to recognize seven different kinds of skin lesions. On the ISIC dataset, an analysis has been done. This study offers a novel approach to early skin cancer diagnosis based on image processing. Our approach leverages the high accuracy of a specific convolutional neural network architecture, utilizing transfer learning with pre-trained data to further enhance detection performance. Our findings demonstrate that the employed ResNet-50 transfer learning model achieves a remarkable accuracy of 97%, while ResNet50 without augmentation gives an accuracy of 81.57% and an F1-score of 75.75%. © The Author(s) 2025.

Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer. This paper introduces a novel framework to discern and classify pulmonary disorders such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung cancer by analyzing conventional X-ray and CT scan images called lung cancer risk prediction (LCRP) model. LCRP has four modules, namely data collection and preprocessing, data augmentation module, image segmentation module, and prediction module. Actually, LCRP employs three deep learning models;sequential model, functional model, and transfer model on publicly available training datasets. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a highly effective field in machine learning, particularly for image datasets in the field of biomedical applications. The primary goal is to validate these models by comparing their performance with other models in order to determine their effectiveness in addressing challenging datasets. Our research has revealed a noteworthy enhancement in the efficiency of binary and multi-class classification using mask R-CNN image segmentation. During the model training process, a combination of Adam and stochastic gradient descent dual optimizers has been used to improve performance. LCRP have outperformed current pre-trained models by minimizing training parameters, computational costs, and overhead. It introduces 98.5% accuracy, 88.7% specificity, 89% sensitivity, 89.2% precision, and 89.09% F-measure. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Water resource management and disaster response have become some of the most challenging tasks, especially when disasters pose a threat, as delays could lead to more impacts. The centralized system used for water dynamics and disaster control usually presents itself as a scalability problem since more clients present a problem, the system's latency is high, and the system is always prone to a single-point failure. The previous approach lacks flexibility and does not synchronously guarantee the integration of several subjects in real time, especially during unpredictable disaster conditions. The proposed FL-MAPPO model surpasses current methods by facilitating decentralized, privacy-protecting decision-making minimizing latency and single-point failures. In contrast to LSTM, Bi-LSTM, and DRNN, which are based on centralized data processing, FL-MAPPO provides real-time adaptability and effective resource management. Experimental results validate that it has lower MSE, higher R² scores, and quicker response times, making it better suited for flood prediction and disaster response. To this end, this study advances a solution through a Decentralized Learning-Driven Multi-Agent Autonomous System (DL-MAAS). The new feature is a Decentralized Cooperation environment in which intelligent and self-managing agents learn utilizing Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Federated Learning (FL) algorithms for enhancing smart water management and real-time disaster relief. IoT devices are adopted for sensing and data acquisition, adaptive learning for decision-making, and optimization of energy use among the agents in the system through metaheuristic algorithms. The research methodology for implementing the proposed solution involves the design of a multi-layered architecture, including data acquisition, decentralized learning, and real-time execution. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating human-like text poses significant challenges in distinguishing between human-written and AI-generated content. Recent advancements in natural language generation have significantly enhanced the quality and variety of AI-generated text, making it almost indistinguishable from human-written content. ChatGPT, a popular AI model, belongs to the generative pre-trained transformer family. While human content is created with a clear intent to convey meaning, AI-generated text aims to replicate human-like language. Classifying human-written and AI-generated sentences is crucial for addressing issues like fake news, plagiarism, and spamming. AI text often follows repetitive patterns, while human writing is more creative and original, making detection significant for combating misinformation. Therefore, this study proposes to classify human-written and AI-generated sentences using a hybrid CNN-GRU model optimized by the Spotted Hyena Algorithm (CHWAIG-DLSHO) approach. The approach involves preprocessing text data through tokenization, lemmatization, and data splitting, followed by word embedding using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). A hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) model is employed for sentence classification. The spotted hyena optimizer (SHO) model is utilized to fine-tune the hyperparameters of the CNN-GRU model, enhancing its performance. The analysis of the CHWAIG-DLSHO method takes place utilizing AI vs. human text dataset. The performance validation of the CHWAIG-DLSHO method portrayed a superior accuracy value of 99.17 % over existing techniques. © 2025 The Authors

Smartphones contain a vast amount of information about their users, which can be used as evidence in criminal cases. However, the sheer volume of data can make it challenging for forensic investigators to identify and use the most relevant information. Neutrosophic logic is a generalization of fuzzy logic that allows for uncertainty and vagueness, making it a more potent tool for dealing with the ambiguity of real-world data. The proposed framework aims to identify and utilize the most relevant information for forensic investigators, making it easier to solve criminal cases using Neutrosophic logic. This novel approach provides a more powerful tool for dealing with the ambiguity of smartphone data, ultimately improving the accuracy and effectiveness of forensic investigations. Our research has utilized Neutrosophic logic to evaluate the degree of truth, falsity, or Indeterminacy of this information. Additionally, this study analyzes conversations between individuals using Excel’s fuzzy lookup add-in to determine the percentage of truth and false in each conversation. The results were compiled into a dataset and utilized a Neutrosophic Python code to evaluate the information. The results indicate the percentage of truth, false, and Indeterminacy in each conversation and which can be used to determine its admissibility as evidence and which not. © 2025, University of New Mexico. Abnormal event detection in video surveillance is critical for security, traffic management, and industrial monitoring applications. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for anomaly detection in video data, encompassing three primary stages: preprocessing, feature learning, and anomaly detection. We employ background subtraction and noise reduction during preprocessing to refine the data. The feature-learning stage involves training an LSTM autoencoder to capture the essential features of normal video sequences. For anomaly detection, we map video data to a lower-dimensional space (latent code) and compare it against the distribution of codes from normal sequences. We determine regularity scores and identify local minima points exceeding a specified threshold while scrutinizing shadows between adjacent maxima to confirm and pinpoint anomalies. When tested on the CUHK Avenue and UMN datasets, our methodology demonstrated performance with AUCs of 93.8% and 94.1%, respectively, outperforming several baseline models. Our results show the high precision of our method that can detect anomalies, highlighting its potential advantages that it can achieve for enhancing systems of surveillance. © The Author(s) 2025.

Predicting Student Behavior Using a Neutrosophic Deep Learning Model

We developed an information system using an object-oriented programming language and a distributed database (DDB) consisting of multiple interconnected databases across a computer network, managed by a distributed database management system (DDBMS) for easy access. An intelligent system was designed to assess the difficulty level of preliminary exams and select top-performing advanced students using a Neutrosophic Deep Learning Model. The dataset was randomly split into training (80%) and testing (20%) sets, and the model, trained with the Adam optimizer at a 0.001 learning rate over 50 epochs, incorporated early stopping based on validation loss. This system, implemented at a traditional Egyptian university, achieved a 95% accuracy in predicting student dropout. Student behavior, influenced by personal, environmental, and academic factors, is often evaluated subjectively, leading to inconsistent results. Traditional machine learning approaches struggle with the inherent uncertainty in behavioral data. To address this, we combined neutrosophic theory—a mathematical framework that accounts for truth, falsity, and indeterminacy—with deep learning, which excels at learning complex data relationships, to predict student outcomes such as dropout rates. Evaluating the model on student data, including attendance and grades, showed superior accuracy, achieving a determination coefficient of 0.95, demonstrating the approach's potential for identifying at-risk students and enabling targeted interventions. © 2025, University of New Mexico.
