The classification of each pixel in a Landsat image to one of the land cover types by conventional clustering techniques is highly inappropriate due to the low resolution of Landsat images and the multiplicity of terrain. The concept of fuzzy logic provides a flexible solution to this problem. This paper presents a new two-pass unsupervised clustering algorithm incorporated the fuzzy theory. In the first pass the mean vectors of different land cover types representing their geographic attributes are derived. In the second pass the membership grade of a pixel belonging to different land cover types is computed based on the distance between its gray-value vector and the mean vector of each type. Experimental results show that the developed fuzzy clustering algorithm produces more reasonable phenomenon interpretation than the traditional hard partition techniques.

A new fully parallel thinning algorithm is developed and evaluated in this paper to solve the noise spurs problem and preserve geometric properties efficiently. The algorithm not only prevents the excessive erosions but also lessens the creation of spurious end points for an image with boundary noise. When two input images are similar in shape but with boundary noise, our skeletons produced appear more consistent in topology as compared to those using other algorithms. Although a few additional neighbors other than 3 x 3 are considered in the deletability conditions, the smoothing procedure prior to thinning is avoided. The parallel thinning algorithm runs very fast and can be implemented in real time. Several English and Chinese characters and the difficult patterns often illustrated in the literature are also experimented to show the efficiency and consistency of our algorithm.

Volumetric part models play an important part in robotic applications such as grasping, path planning, object avoidance, and modeling kinematic chains. The authors present a novel method for reliable and efficient recovery of part-descriptions in terms of superquadric models from range images. In contrast to usual approaches which perform the recovery of volumetric models in several steps (from curves, surfaces to volumes), the authors show that a direct recovery is possible. This is achieved by combining two existing methods: recover-and-select paradigm and recovery of superquadric models. A redundant set of superquadratics is initiated in the image and only the recovered models resulting in the simplest overall description are selected. The significant disadvantage for traditional contour representation is as the resolution is reduced the effort of undersampling is proportional enlarged. The goal of this study is to improve edge detection results, especially for those corner points in low resolution. This study describes a method, which is based on 4-connected pixel-wise linearization, for finding contours from low resolution video images. This allows a more accurate inspection and identification of objects from image data. In practice, geometrical models are used to manipulate this linearization. A method is employed for examining the corner points as well.< >
