Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is an appealing technique for confirming the welding quality and ensuring structural integrity without causing damage. It assists in regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and process optimization for improved industrial reliability. This study reviews potential NDT approaches. Through a rigorous analysis of existing surveys, we aim to decipher the current landscape and highlight the significant advancements in the field. Because of the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) assistive X-ray imaging-based NDT, we particularly examine the integration of AI algorithms and X-ray imaging in the NDT of welds. This convergence represents a paradigm shift, redefining traditional methods and ushering in a new era of precision, automation, and efficiency. As we navigate through potential X-ray imaging datasets, delve into crucial image processing techniques, examine feature extraction methods, and explore AI algorithms, our survey reveals the intricate interplay of technologies that drive automated weld defect categorization. The review broadens its focus by including various practical applications, highlighting the adaptable utility of AI-assistive X-ray imaging for weld defect detection in potential industrial applications. Moreover, the promising opportunities and nuanced challenges associated with integrating X-ray imaging and AI in weld integrity assessment are highlighted. Due to cloud security concerns, there is an increasing interest in information retrieval systems that can support private queries over public documents. It is desirable for oblivious document ranking and retrieval in public cloud at lower cost and faster speed without revealing query-related information. Currently, the term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) and private information retrieval (PIR) techniques are used to solve this problem, but the encryption operation time is over dominant. Motivated by the observation of the sparsity of the TF-IDF matrix, we propose an efficient approach for oblivious document ranking and retrieval, called E-Coeus. It takes advantage of the high sparsity of the TF-IDF matrix to rearrange the matrix. Our method accelerates the speed of PIR inadvertently retrieving documents and reduces the user retrieval delay time. In a stand-alone experiment for a TF-IDF matrix of 1.2M rows and 64K columns with the sparsity of 10%, E-Coeus improves the document ranking and retrieval performance by 23% over the state-of-the-art approach, Coeus. With cluster of 64 machines, E-Coeus improves the performance by 34% over Coeus when the TF-IDF matrix sparsity is 30%.

Erasure codes have been widely applied to in-memory key-value storage systems for high reliability and low redundancy. In distributed in-memory key-value storage systems, update operations are relatively frequent, especially the partial-stripe update, which makes data update more challenging. Recently, existing research has been based on appending logs to accelerate parity data write. However, its logs are stored on disks, which decreases the system performance significantly. Therefore, we propose a novel in-memory key-value storage architecture, DNVPL, which utilizes NVRAM to log parity data. Our main idea is to design an appending-only update scheme to tradeoff the memory cost and the update overhead. We implement DNVPL with an in-memory key-value storage prototype, called LogKV. We evaluate it with different workloads. The experiments show that our scheme achieves high update performance from different metrics. Our scheme can reduce update latency by up to 49% and save storage space by 48% compared to the state-of-the-art schemes.

Error analysis of transformer hot spot temperature measurement

According to the national standard GB/T 1094.7-2008, the method of hot spot measurement of oil-immersed transformer is used to place several temperature sensors inside the gasket within the predicted hot spot position to measure the temperature of winding transformer. The highest temperature measured is regarded as the hot spot temperature of transformer. Since the winding and gasket are bad conductors of heat, there exists certain temperature difference between the gasket and the hot spot temperature of the winding. This temperature difference is not mentioned in the national standard GB/T 1094.7-2008, which is bound to affect the accuracy of the transformer hot spot temperature *** order to ensure safe operation of transformer, the thermal environment of temperature measuring point is analyzed and the discrete equation of boundary node is established. The parameters are set according to the heat transfer mode of the oil-immersed transformer and the temperature characteristics of each heat transfer node is analyzed. Gauss-Seidel Iteration method is used to calculate the theoretical value of the measuring point of the oil-immersed transformer and the heat transfer model of the measuring point is established for further analysis. The experimental platform of the oil-immersed transformer simulator is established according to the method described in the national standard and used to measure the hot spot temperature and winding surface temperature. The results show that when the winding temperature is 77◦C, the heat transfer model of the temperature measuring point is 74.7◦C and the experimental temperature of the temperature measuring point is 74.9◦C. The relative error between theoretical calculation temperature and experimental temperature is 0.27%. As the temperature of the experiment increases, the temperature difference between the temperature point and the winding temperature gradually increases, and the maximum absolute error is 2.1◦C. © 2021 River Pu

Since the discovery of COVID-19 in late 2019, the viral pneumonia crisis has begun to spread rapidly around the world. Lesion segmentation can remove unnecessary background areas and help doctors diagnose the condition. However, the infected areas showed differences at different stages, and the border between the infected areas and the surrounding tissue was blurred. To solve this problem, a novel COVID-19 lung infection segmentation network (Mix-Net) is designed for the automatic identification of infected areas from chest CT slices. Specifically, first, the local and global features of the infected areas are extracted and interacted with using the mixing block. Then, the features extracted from multiple layers of the encoder are fused and connected to the decoder. Experiments show that Mix-Net outperforms most cutting-edge segmentation models and achieves good segmentation results.

Video action recognition (VAR) plays crucial roles in various domains such as surveillance, healthcare, and industrial automation, making it highly significant for the society. Consequently, it has long been a research spot in the computer vision field. As artificial neural networks (ANNs) are flourishing, convolution neural networks (CNNs), including 2D-CNNs and 3D-CNNs, as well as variants of the vision transformer (ViT), have shown impressive performance on VAR. However, they usually demand huge computational cost due to the large data volume and heavy information redundancy introduced by the temporal dimension. To address this challenge, some researchers have turned to brain-inspired spiking neural networks (SNNs), such as recurrent SNNs and ANN-converted SNNs, leveraging their inherent temporal dynamics and energy efficiency. Yet, current SNNs for VAR also encounter limitations, such as nontrivial input preprocessing, intricate network construction/training, and the need for repetitive processing of the same video clip, hindering their practical deployment. In this study, we innovatively propose the directly trained SVFormer (Spiking Video transFormer) for VAR. SVFormer integrates local feature extraction, global self-attention, and the intrinsic dynamics, sparsity, and spike-driven nature of SNNs, to efficiently and effectively extract spatio-temporal features. We evaluate SVFormer on two RGB datasets (UCF101, NTU-RGBD60) and one neuromorphic dataset (DVS128-Gesture), demonstrating comparable performance to the mainstream models in a more efficient way. Notably, SVFormer achieves a top-1 accuracy of 84.03% with ultra-low power consumption (21 mJ/video) on UCF101, which is state-of-the-art among directly trained deep SNNs, showcasing significant advantages over prior models. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Towards Combating Frequency Simplicity-biased Learning for Domain Generalization

Domain generalization methods aim to learn transferable knowledge from source domains that can generalize well to unseen target domains. Recent studies show that neural networks frequently suffer from a simplicity-biased learning behavior which leads to over-reliance on specific frequency sets, namely as frequency shortcuts, instead of semantic information, resulting in poor generalization performance. Despite previous data augmentation techniques successfully enhancing generalization performances, they intend to apply more frequency shortcuts, thereby causing hallucinations of generalization improvement. In this paper, we aim to prevent such learning behavior of applying frequency shortcuts from a data-driven perspective. Given the theoretical justification of models’ biased learning behavior on different spatial frequency components, which is based on the dataset frequency properties, we argue that the learning behavior on various frequency components could be manipulated by changing the dataset statistical structure in the Fourier domain. Intuitively, as frequency shortcuts are hidden in the dominant and highly dependent frequencies of dataset structure, dynamically perturbating the over-reliance frequency components could prevent the application of frequency shortcuts. To this end, we propose two effective data augmentation modules designed to collaboratively and adaptively adjust the frequency characteristic of the dataset, aiming to dynamically influence the learning behavior of the model and ultimately serving as a strategy to mitigate shortcut learning. The municipal solid waste incineration has great advantages for resource recovery and utilization, and the stability of its combustion state is of great significance to the control process. However, the problem of low accuracy still exists in the classification of the images of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). For this reason, this paper proposes an image classification algorithm for MSWI based on attention module. The framework of ResNet is employed to improve the depth and accuracy of the network, which solves the problem of insufficient depth of the traditional network while suffering from the deficiency of slow convergence speed. Consequently, the attention module is embedded to solve the problem of different importance of different parts in the incineration flame image. The results show that the algorithm improves the recognition accuracy of municipal solid waste incineration flame images to 96.7%, and the convergence speed is significantly improved compared to other basic neural network models.

Increasingly available ultrastructural data from a continuously growing diversity of experimental conditions are driving new opportunities for fruitful neuroscientific hypotheses tested in intracellular compartments such as the nanoscale roles of, e.g., the mitochondria. Reliable morphological statistics are based on achieving highly accurate semantic segmentations of EM images. The state-of-the-art deep CNNs can be somewhat brittle;they tend to provide coarse and high-frequency-oscillatory solutions with discontinuities and false positives even for simple mitochondria segmentation. Historically, the current state-of-the-art in medical image segmentation would involve some variant of the encoder-decoder architecture, such as the U-Net architecture. The SAM does not perform as well, since it has not been explicitly trained for the task and does not demonstrate user-interactive, over one billion annotations mostly for natural images. However, the SAM may be applied to segment anything, including medical image segmentation challenging new datasets. This work is aimed at the difficult task of implementing domain adaptation in mitochondria segmentation within EM images obtained from various tissues and species, using deep learning. We do a systematic study to assess SAM's ability to perform segmentation in medical images, measure its performance on volumetric EM datasets, and show that it is powerful at segmenting instances even under challenging imaging conditions. We provide a fine-tuning SAM which can be naturally trained by SAM at an exemplary scale, benefiting from a diverse and large dataset over one million image masks in 11 modalities. This model would be able to perform precise segmentation for a wide range of targets under various imaging conditions, at the level of performance of specialized U-Net models, or even better. The Global Navigation Satellite System Network Reference Stations (GNSS-NRS) are pivotal in modern po-sitioning and navigation applications. However, GNSS-NRS face significant communication challenges, including instability during rapid user movement and inconsistent coverage by different operators, which often results in data transmission interruptions and delays. Moreover, the conventional Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) scheduling strategy does not accommodate the diversity of the data types managed by GNSS-NRS. This default approach treats all data uniformly, even under deteriorating network conditions. To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces a ‘Multiple Reception’ strategy based on MPTCP that ensures timely and reliable GNSS data transmission. This novel strategy differentiates between observational and control data based on their real-time criticality and applies tailored transmission techniques. Under adverse conditions, it utilizes multiple transmission paths and selectively receives control data, thus prioritizing the transfer of critical information. We conducted simulation experiments using MiniNet to compare the ‘Multiple Reception’ method against conventional and redundant strategies, demonstrating that it significantly reduces data loss rates in GNSS-NRS.
