More than a year has passed since reports of ChatGPT-3.5’s capability to pass exams sent shockwaves through education circles. These initial concerns led to a multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary study to assess the performance of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) against assessment tasks used across 10 engineering subjects, showcasing the capability of GenAI. Assessment types included online quiz, numerical, oral, visual, programming and writing (experimentation, project, reflection and critical thinking, and research). Twelve months later, the study was repeated using new and updated tools ChatGPT-4, Copilot, Gemini, SciSpace and Wolfram. The updated study investigated the performance and capability differences, identifying the best tool for each assessment type. The findings show that increased performance and features can only heighten academic integrity concerns. While cheating concerns are central, opportunities to integrate GenAI to enhance teaching and learning are possible. While each GenAI tool had specific strengths and weaknesses, ChatGPT-4 was well-rounded. A GenAI Assessment Security and Opportunity Matrix is presented to provide the community practical guidance on managing assessment integrity risks and integration opportunities to enhance learning. © 2024 The Author(s). Underwater fiber optic networks have become increasingly widespread to facilitate underwater communique. However, due to their high installation and maintenance expenses, laying out green networks that maximize bandwidth usage is essential. This paper proposes a cost-powerful resource allocation method for underwater fiber optic networks using bandwidth optimization strategies. The proposed methodology consists of 3 most important steps: First, it fashions the network's topology with graph-theoretic algorithms, which optimizes the bandwidth usage to maximize hyperlink efficiency. Moreover, it presents methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the generated topology and decide the ideal network allocation based totally on price estimation. Eventually, the cost-effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated by the usage of simulations done on underwater networks with numerous topologies. Results display that the proposed approach achieves widespread price financial savings over conventional methods. The automotive industry strives to increase the safety of road users using various advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs). One of the ADAS solutions that should increase the safety of drivers and road users approaching the vehicle from behind is the one that includes an alarm system when the driver leaves the vehicle if there is a possibility of a collision with objects comming from behind. In this paper, a new solution for this purpose is proposed. The solution consists of the YOLOv7 algorithm for detecting traffic participants in video sequences, an algorithm for tracking detected traffic participants, and a distance estimation algorithm needed for calculating the speed of the object coming from behind and the time to potential collision (TTC) with the driver's door, which potentially triggers the alarm system. After the development and testing of the solution using a PC, the solution is implemented and tested on the Raspberry Pi 4 platform to test its performance in the case of the embedded platform with limited computational resources. The solution has been tested on a custom dataset which consists of 34 different video sequences, aiming to detect five types of objects (car, bus or truck, pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist). The solution achieves high performance in terms of alarm activation and is able to process 25 FPS, thus providing real-time operation capabilities. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.

In Natural Language Processing, text prediction represents the process of predicting the word with the highest probability through a predictive language model from a series of text corpus. The N-gram model is familiar and considered the handiest and most computationally cost-effective model for text processing. Additionally, higher N-gram models, especially the 5-gram ones, give the best text prediction. Interestingly, these better prediction results were obtained only on the training dataset. In contrast, the highest N-gram model imploded badly on the evaluation dataset. This paper proposes an approach where the N-gram model, especially the bi-gram model, and the fine tuning with Laplace Smoothing, provide the best prediction results at the evaluation stage. © 2022 IEEE.

Automatic Speaker Recognition (ASR) in mismatched conditions is a challenging task, since robust feature extraction and classification techniques are required. Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN) is an efficient network that can learn to recognize speakers, text-independently, when the recording circumstances are similar. Unfortunately, when the recording circumstances differ, its performance degrades. In this paper, Radon projection of the spectrograms of speech signals is implemented to get the features, since Radon Transform (RT) has less sensitivity to noise and reverberation conditions. The Radon projection is implemented on the spectrograms of speech signals, and then 2-D Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is computed. This technique improves the system recognition accuracy, text-independently with less sensitivity to noise and reverberation effects. The ASR system performance with the proposed features is compared to that of the system that depends on Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and spectrum features. For noisy utterances at 25 dB, the recognition rate with the proposed feature reaches 80%, while it is 27% and 28% with MFCCs and spectrum, respectively. For reverberant speech, the recognition rate reaches 80.67% with the proposed features, while it reaches 54% and 62.67% with the MFCCs and spectrum, respectively. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
