More and more microcontrollers are embedded in a large area of products from industrial to domestic domains. A good example is the automobile, a modern one containing tens of microcontrollers. As their number increased the communication between them became necessary. The serial solution was preferred and a lot of serial buses and protocols were developed optimizing different parameters of the communication. Several examples are: RS232, LIN, SPI, CAN and so on. Monitoring serial communications is necessary in R&D phase, e.g. for creating virtual transfer partners, and in testing and debugging phases. The paper describes a message based monitoring tool for the RS232 bus and monitoring tools for the LIN and SPI buses. Many microcontrollers contain the LIN and SPI buses and almost all of them include the RS232 bus. The created tools work in passive mode, monitoring the transfers and sending the data to a PC or in active mode (only for the LIN bus), interfering in the communication and sending headers, responses or injecting typical errors

The PC based virtual instrumentation is a dynamic and attractive alternative to the classic instrumentation. Its main advantages are: flexibility and adaptability, low cost, wide development of extension PC boards with measurements features, attractive representation of measurement results, in different forms, on the PC's monitor. The paper presents a system identification application with PC based (virtual) instrumentation. The virtual system is made of an external board, connected to the PC via the USB interface and a software tool, Agilent VEE (Visual engineering Environment). The presented virtual system can work as a voltmeter, ammeter, signal generator, digital oscilloscope and power supply. The main contribution of the paper is the extension of the application domain of the virtual instrumentation system to system identification. The identification method consists of applying to the system input a binary pseudorandom signal (BPRS) and determining the impulse response of the system as being well approximated by the cross-correlation function between the input signal and the answer of the system. The application is intended for educational purposes but can be used in other areas too

Digital watermarking medical images provides security to the images. The purpose of this study was to see whether digitally watermarked images changed clinical diagnoses when assessed by radiologists. We embedded 256 bits watermark to various medical images in the region of non-interest (RONI) and 480K bits in both region of interest (ROI) and RONI. Our results showed that watermarking medical images did not alter clinical diagnoses. In addition, there was no difference in image quality when visually assessed by the medical radiologists. We therefore concluded that digital watermarking medical images were safe in terms of preserving image quality for clinical purposes

This paper proposes a new call quality measure based on mobile signal strength measurements to evaluate performance of handoff algorithms in wireless cellular networks. The proposed measure allows the quantification of the impact of the handoff algorithms of performance. Using the proposed measure we compare existing handoff algorithms to identify the trade-off between signal quality and required number of handoffs. Our results indicate that a handoff method based on a threshold with 2 dB hysteresis provides better performance compared to the conventional wisdom of 3 dB hysteresis. We provide a benchmark value for handoff algorithms based on an off-line heuristic method using the new measure. Our benchmark shows that there is substantial room for improvement of the existing handoff algorithm
