A supervised feature selection method selects an appropriate but concise set of features to differentiate classes, which is highly expensive for large-scale datasets. Therefore, feature selection should aim at both minimizing the number of selected features and maximizing the accuracy of classification, or any other task. However, this crucial task is computationally highly demanding on many real-world datasets and requires a very efficient algorithm to reach a set of optimal features with a limited number of fitness evaluations. For this purpose, we have proposed the binary multi-objective coordinate search (MOCS) algorithm to solve large-scale feature selection problems. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed algorithm in this paper is the first multi-objective coordinate search algorithm. In this method, we generate new individuals by flipping a variable of the candidate solutions on the Pareto front. This enables us to investigate the effectiveness of each feature in the corresponding subset. In fact, this strategy can play the role of crossover and mutation operators to generate distinct subsets of features. The reported results indicate the significant superiority of our method over NSGA-II, on five real-world large-scale datasets, particularly when the computing budget is limited. Moreover, this simple hyper-parameter-free algorithm can solve feature selection much faster and more efficiently than NSGA-II. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Internet of Things, edge computing devices, the widespread use of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, and the extensive adoption of cloud computing pose significant challenges to maintaining fault tolerance in distributed systems. As the volume and complexity of systems continue to grow, the probability of system failures also grows, leading to downtime and poor performance. Fault tolerance is pivotal in modern computing systems by preventing downtime and service disruptions, even during failures. However, adopting fault tolerance comes with additional resource consumption, such as memory, CPU, disk, and network bandwidth usage, impacting system performance. Balancing fault tolerance with system performance is crucial to optimize resource utilization while minimizing the costs associated with detecting and recovering from faults. This paper introduces a node-to-node fault tolerance coordination mechanism for distributed systems to facilitate the tradeoff between fault tolerance and the cost of performance penalties and resource consumption. The proposed mechanism is preliminarily implemented on HDFS cluster. Our proposal enables opportunities to minimize the cost of the fault tolerance impact on performance and resource usage compared to the existing fault tolerance coordination mechanism.

With the ongoing advancements in science and technology and the increasing research focus on cancer-related issues, there has been a proliferation of omics-related resources for in-depth analysis and exploration. This burgeoning volume and complexity of biological data have fostered the integration of machine-learning techniques into biology. As a result, numerous machine-learning strategies have been established to identify driver mutations. Yet, many of these strategies produce complex models, complicating comprehension and thereby clouding the impact of input features on the resulting predictions. Our analysis presented the CIXG framework, which integrates a driver gene prediction module using XGBoost with a causality interpretation module anchored on CXPlain. This architecture enables quantifying each input feature’s contribution to the prediction outcome and ensures precise predictions of driver genes. When benchmarked against the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method, CIXG demonstrated superior accuracy in pinpointing driver genes across pan-cancer studies and within the 32 specific cancer types. Importantly, our results underscored that mutation features chiefly influence CIXG’s predictive prowess, with additional support from other omics features.

Selecting the requirements for an information system based on their ranking values is one of the critical steps in software development. Various methods for computing the ranking order of the requirements have been developed using multi-criteria decision-making methods. This study shows selecting the requirements for different software releases using a recommendation system is an unresearched problem. We present a recommendation system (PRecSys) for computing the ranking order of the requirements in an information system using fuzzy-based adjusted cosine similarity measure and collaborative filtering to recommend the requirements to stakeholders with similar interests. The ranking order of the information systems requirements in PRecSys is computed using the fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The applicability of PRecSys is discussed by considering the requirements for a library information system. The PRecSys is compared with PHandler, an expert system for choosing the requirements, based on the following criteria: agreement measure, the number of judgments by decision-makers, and time complexity. © 2024 The Authors

The discovery of Road Traffic Accident (RTA) patterns is vital to formulate mitigation strategies based on the characteristics of RTA. Various studies have applied association rule mining for RTA pattern discovery. However, limited research has conducted a comparative analysis of RTA patterns in different regions. This work is necessary to identify the similarities and differences of RTA characteristics between different regions, especially the developed and developing countries with different RTA trends in fatality rates. This work explored the application of association rule mining (FP-Growth algorithm) to discover and compare the RTA patterns for developed and developing countries. The Orange Data Mining software is used to discover RTA patterns for Ethiopia (12,317 samples) and the UK (United Kingdom) (1,048,575 samples), representing developing and developed countries. Eventually, findings showed similarities and differences in RTA patterns between Ethiopia and the UK. Road characteristics and conditions are the common factors contributing to RTA severity levels, while other crucial factors include the light condition and speed limit. In conclusion, the discovery of RTA patterns in different regions is beneficial to assist in formulating strategies to reduce the risk of RTA. Future work is necessary to discover the RTA patterns from different perspectives, such as seasonal or periodical variations of RTA patterns.

This paper addresses the problem of deploying complex systems in Kubernetes clusters. It discusses using the OperatorSDK framework supported by RedHat as a basis for implementing the Kubernetes operator for Lightweight MultiAccess Edge Computing Platform Simulator (LWMECPS) deployment. Special attention is given to the operator Kubernetes architecture and how to use Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM) to continuously deploy LWMECPS and machine learning models for it.

The European Commission has published a list of high-value datasets (HVDs) that public sector bodies must make available as open data as part of the Open Data Directive. One of the HVD topics is company data. Although the HVD description contains items that must be included in these datasets, it does not prescribe any technical means of how the data should be published. This is a major obstacle to the interoperability of the datasets once they are published. In this extended paper, we elaborate on the results of STIRData, a project co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility Programme of the European Union, focusing on various aspects of data interoperability of open data from business registries, covering the company data HVDs topic. These aspects include the semantic, technical, and legal interoperability of this data. The results include a data architecture and a data specification to make the published data technically and semantically interoperable. In addition, we present basic legal interoperability guidelines to ensure legal interoperability of the published data, which is a topic often neglected by technically focused data experts. The project results include proof-of-concept transformations of data from selected European business registries using open source tools and in accordance with the data specification. Moreover, a user-orientated platform for browsing and analysing the data is presented as an example of the possibilities of using the data published in an interoperable way. Finally, we present an example of how compliant data can be processed by data experts for further analysis. © The Author(s) 2024.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) holds a record of high incidence and severe global harm. In tasks of liver cancer segmentation based on 3D medical images, the majority of methods have endeavored to enhance the 3D U-net by integrating the latest modules from the field of computer Vision (such as the transformer), often overlooking the distinct characteristics of liver components. We introduced a novel deep learning architecture, Modif-SegUnet, to circumvent this limitation. This architecture extends the U-net model by incorporating a 3D-modifiable attention module, thereby fostering a heightened focus on distinguishing between normal liver sections and lesions. Furthermore, Modif-SegUnet ingeniously amalgamates the 3D-modifiable attention module with the Modif-transformer block, enabling efficient capture of relevant and valuable full-text information in CT images that contain liver or tumor regions. We subjected the proposed Modif-SegUnet to evaluation on the Liver Tumor Segmentation benchmark dataset. Experimental outcomes indicate that our methodology surpasses state-of-the-art approaches in liver tumor segmentation, suggesting potential pathways for advancing the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer.

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) techniques estimate the consumption of individual appliances in a household or facility, based on readings of a centralized meter. Lately, deep learning techniques have demonstrated outstanding performance for NILM predictions. Nevertheless, a possible problem is that users and consumers may find it hard to trust the results of such algorithms if they do not fully understand the reasons for their outputs. In this light, this work presents a method that explains and justifies the outputs of NILM convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers, using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques. The method operates as follows: a CNN model for NILM is used to estimate which appliances are activated in the system based on the total power consumption. Then, a XAI technique uses this model and its outputs to explain and justify the prediction of this model. Thereby, the NILM CNN classifier outputs are both accurate and are more interpretable, allowing users to make informed and trustworthy decisions. These ideas are demonstrated on the REDD dataset using a convolutional neural network classifier and two state-of-the-art XAI techniques. © 2022 IEEE.
