Gene selection based on adaptive neighborhood-preserving multi-objective particle swarm optimization

The analysis of high-dimensional microarray gene expression data presents critical challenges, including excessive dimensionality, increased computational burden, and sensitivity to random initialization. Traditional optimization algorithms often produce inconsistent and suboptimal results, while failing to preserve local data structures limiting both predictive accuracy and biological interpretability. To address these limitations, this study proposes an adaptive neighborhood-preserving multi-objective particle swarm optimization (ANPMOPSO) framework for gene selection. ANPMOPSO introduces four key innovations: (1) a weighted neighborhood-preserving ensemble embedding (WNPEE) technique for dimensionality reduction that retains local structure;(2) Sobol sequence (SS) initialization to enhance population diversity and convergence stability;(3) a differential evolution (DE)-based adaptive velocity update to dynamically balance exploration and exploitation;and (4) a novel ranking strategy that combines Pareto dominance with neighborhood preservation quality to prioritize biologically meaningful gene subsets. Experimental evaluations on six benchmark microarray datasets and eleven multi-modal test functions (MMFs) demonstrate that ANPMOPSO consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods. For example, it achieves 100% classification accuracy on Leukemia and Small-Round-Blue-Cell Tumor (SRBCT) using only 3–5 genes, improving accuracy by 5–15% over competitors while reducing gene subsets by 40–60%. Additionally, on MMFs, ANPMOPSO attains superior hypervolume values (e.g., 1.0617 ± 0.2225 on MMF1, approximately 10–20% higher than competitors), confirming its robustness in balancing convergence and diversity. Although the method incurs higher training time due to its structural and adaptive components, it achieves a strong trade-off between computational cost and biological relevance, making it a promising tool for high-dimensional gene selection in bioinformatics. © 2025

Fed-CVLC: Compressing Federated Learning Communications with Variable-Length Codes

In Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, a parameter server (PS) concurrently communicates with distributed participating clients for model collection, update aggregation, and model distribution over multiple rounds, without touching private data owned by individual clients. FL is appealing in preserving data privacy;yet the communication between the PS and scattered clients can be a severe bottleneck. Model compression algorithms, such as quantization and sparsification, have been suggested but they generally assume a fixed code length, which does not reflect the heterogeneity and variability of model updates. In this paper, through both analysis and experiments, we show strong evidences that variable-length is beneficial for compression in FL. We accordingly present Fed-CVLC (Federated Learning Compression with Variable-Length Codes), which fine-tunes the code length in response of the dynamics of model updates. We develop optimal tuning strategy that minimizes the loss function (equivalent to maximizing the model utility) subject to the budget for communication. We further demonstrate that Fed-CVLC is indeed a general compression design that bridges quantization and sparsification, with greater flexibility. Extensive experiments have been conducted with public datasets to demonstrate that Fed-CVLC remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, improving model utility by 1.50%-5.44%, or shrinking communication traffic by 16.67%-41.61%. Plastic pollution has become a major environmental challenge globally as millions of tons of plastic waste are entering oceans and landfills every year. The production and usage of plastic has surged due to its low cost and easy availability. This in turn leads to widespread usage of single-use plastics. Plastic waste takes centuries to degrade and when it decomposes, it breaks down into harmful microplastics that pollute the air, soil and water. This pollution of microplastics threatens wildlife, marine life and creates health risks for human beings. Moreover, plastic production and its waste release significant amounts of greenhouse gases which further contribute to climate change. As plastic waste is continuously accumulating in the environment its long-term effects on humans, climate and ecosystem are inevitable. On the other hand, the increased usage of electronic devices has transformed daily life and has raised concerns about the energy consumption of these devices and the generation of e-waste due to disposable batteries. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as an innovative way to convert mechanical energy into electricity by utilizing frictional forces and vibrations. TENGs can be integrated into wearable electronics which in turn eliminates the need for frequent battery replacement and enhances sustainability. This study presents a low-cost triboelectric nanogenerator made from recycled bubble wrap and sketching paper (BW-TENG). BW-TENG offers an efficient and eco-friendly way to generate energy from common household waste materials. BW-TENG is capable of generating an open circuit voltage (V oc ) of 6.38 V, a short circuit current (I sc ) of 5.9 µA and a maximum output power of 7.84 µW respectively. BW TENG not only ensures the circularity of waste materials but also highlights the cost-effective manufacturing of a lightweight triboelectric nanogenerator.

This paper re-examines the relationship between the Knowledge Transfer (KT) and the project management process groups. Knowledge Transfer as one of the knowledge management life-cycle is supposed to have a remarkable impact on the enterprise system success. However, project failure is one of the main problems in enterprise systems management and lack of proper documentation on the results of previous projects and knowledge transfer are the main reasons. In this paper, we have found that enterprise system project divided into three stages, with (6) process groups in the Pre-Implementation stage, (6) process groups during-Implementation stage, and (3) process groups in the post-Implementation, however, there are eleven (11) roles who are evolving to anticipate the fifth results (Project Proposal, Evaluation Ratings, Project Charter, Project Plan, Project Documents), to increase the understanding of knowledge in each project stages to improve the enterprise system project success. © 2021 IEEE.

Despite a recent surge of research interest in privacy and transferrable deep learning, optimizing the tradeoff between privacy requirements and performance of machine learning models remains a challenge. This motivates the development of an approach that optimizes both privacy-preservation mechanism and learning of the deep models for achieving a robust performance. This paper considers the problem of semi-supervised transfer and multi-task learning under differential privacy framework. An alternative conception of deep autoencoder, referred to as Conditionally Deep Membership-Mapping Autoencoder (CDMMA), is considered for transferrable deep learning. Under practice-oriented settings, an analytical solution for the learning of CDMMA can be derived by means of variational optimization. The paper proposes a transfer and multi-task learning approach that combines CDMMA with a tailored noise adding mechanism to transfer knowledge from source to target domain in a privacy-preserving manner.

Handwritten signatures hold paramount importance in legal, financial, and administrative domains, necessitating the development of robust signature recognition tools for forensic applications. This paper introduces a handwritten signature recognition (HSR) model employing Parallel Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) tailored for forensic endeavors. Utilizing the parallel processing capabilities of CNN, our proposed approach adeptly analyzes and extracts discriminative features from handwritten signature images to facilitate precise recognition. In addition, we leverage several transfer learning techniques by parallelizing proven pre-trained CNNs. Extensive experimentation validates the efficacy of our approach on a standard dataset, demonstrating high accuracy and resilience in signature recognition tasks. The proposed approach exhibits substantial promise in augmenting forensic investigations by automating signature verification processes, thereby bolstering fraud detection efforts and upholding the integrity of legal documentation.

Data security is becoming increasingly critical as outsourced data services flourish. An effective solution for ensuring data confidentiality in the cloud is attribute-based searchable encryption (ABSE). However, most extant ABSE solutions have not been able to simultaneously achieve rich expressive queries, result validation, attribute revocation, and policy hiding, and there are problems such as inflexibility in query methods and access control capabilities, insufficient scalability and practicality, and privacy leakage. In particular, it should be noted that most ABSE schemes fail to promise the privacy security of access policies and are susceptible to offline keyword guessing attack. Hidden policy-ABSE (HP-ABSE) has been proposed to tackle the issue of explicit attribute values in access policies potentially compromising privacy. Nevertheless, in most existing HP-ABSE schemes, an adversary may initiate attribute values guessing attack to speculate on the values of attribute within access strategy. To this end, this paper proposes partially hidden policy attribute-based multi-keyword searchable encryption with verification and revocation (PHP-ABMKSE-VR). PHP-ABMKSE-VR scheme is practical, secure, as well as effective, making it appropriate for real-world scenarios like smart healthcare, as demonstrated by the experimental outcomes and safety analysis. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) seeks to train a model collaboratively without sharing private training data from individual clients. Despite its promise, FL encounters challenges such as high communication costs for large-scale models and the necessity for uniform model architectures across all clients and the server. These challenges severely restrict the practical applications of FL. To address these limitations, the integration of knowledge distillation (KD) into FL has been proposed, forming what is known as Federated Distillation (FD). FD enables more flexible knowledge transfer between clients and the server, surpassing the mere sharing of model parameters. By eliminating the need for identical model architectures across clients and the server, FD mitigates the communication costs associated with training large-scale models. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive overview of FD, highlighting its latest advancements. It delves into the fundamental principles underlying the design of FD frameworks, delineates FD approaches for tackling various challenges, and provides insights into the diverse applications of FD across different scenarios. Stroke is a life-threatening disease usually due to blockage of blood or insufficient blood flow to the *** has a tremendous impact on every aspect of life since it is the leading global factor of disability and *** can range from minor to severe(extensive).Thus,early stroke assessment and treatment can enhance survival *** prediction is extremely time and resource *** prediction methods such as Modern Information and Communication Technologies(ICTs),particularly those inMachine Learning(ML)area,are crucial for the early diagnosis and prognosis of ***,this research proposed an ensemble voting model based on three Machine Learning(ML)algorithms:Random Forest(RF),Extreme Gradient Boosting(XGBoost),and Light Gradient Boosting Machine(LGBM).We apply data preprocessing to manage the outliers and useless instances in the ***,to address the problem of imbalanced data,we enhance the minority class’s representation using the Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique(SMOTE),allowing it to engage in the learning process *** reveal that the suggested model outperforms existing studies and other classifiers with 0.96%accuracy,0.97%precision,0.97%recall,and 0.96%*** experiment demonstrates that the proposed ensemble voting model outperforms state-of-the-art and other traditional approaches.
