Olfaction is a long distance sense, which is widely used by animals for foraging or reproductive activities. Olfaction plays a significant role in natural life of most animals. For some animals, olfactory cues are far more effective than visual or auditory cues in search for objects such as foods and nests. Although chemical sensing is far simpler than vision or hearing, navigation in a chemical diffusion field is still not well understood. Therefore, this powerful primary sense has rarely been used inside the robotics community. This paper presents an effective olfactory-based planning and search algorithms for using on mobile robots. Olfactory-based mobile robots use odors as a guide to navigate and track in the unknown environments. The planning algorithms are based on Bayesian inference theory and artificial potential field methods. Inputs to the algorithms include the measured flow and the detection or non-detection events that happened at the robot location. This methodology results in algorithms for predicting likelihood of source location versus position. The robot would then optimize a desired trajectory to navigate in the odor plume and locate the odor source location.

In this paper, we propose to improve the SvS algorithm by skipping elements of the smaller set for reducing a search boundary. The boundary of skipped element is determined by boundaries of elements prior to and next to it. We perform experiments on uniformly distributed random datasets to compare our algorithm with the standard SvS. We use regression analysis to get an equation for determining an appropriate skipping number. Our results show that the skipping SvS algorithm using the equation obtained can reduce approximately 41% on the number of comparisons of the standard SvS algorithm.

The need for stricter security, availability of sophisticated algorithms and improved hardware at cheaper price, are the driving forces for increasing popularity of biometric authentication. Machine authentication from face images or fingerprints at the entrance of a building or at bank-teller is getting more and more common. The popularity of using face image features for authentication is due to its ease of use. But its success depends on proper orientation and illumination. Facial features change with the angle of orientation, and even a genuine person would be rejected by the machine due to improper orientation of the face towards the camera. In this work, we proposed a multi-layer perceptron based face identification technique which is robust to orientation of the face image under similar illumination condition. Training data of facial features against orientation angle features is used to train a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). It is then used for interpolation of facial features at different angles. Experiments were conducted with two types of face image identifying features, using PCA and ICA. A good interpolation property could be obtained by the trained MLP, and a zero equal error rate (EER) could be achieved.

In the business world, financial institutions, like banks and investment firms, heavily rely on technology to manipulate daily operations and support business. Many more business processes have now become automated and require procedures to be approved. For example, when providing business services liked personal / corporate loans, mortgage, or Letter of Credit (LC), a customer is required to submit information within their applications; whereas, the service provider has to perform complicated approval procedures, involving different departments or even external parties. In this paper, we discuss how a credit approval system (CAS) handles the workflow of such business processes. The system is extensible to contemporary technologies including business process execution language (BPEL), asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and Java server face (JSF) in order to coordinate related parties through the Internet as well as to facilitate the operations and communications with different levels of staff in the Intranet. Our experiences and design characteristics will be further implemented into a system designed for a global financial firm.

In recent years the focus of grid computing shifted towards more data intensive applications, increasingly needing access to various public and private databases. Relocating the code for Data Preprocessing (DPP) closer towards the data source is the overall task of the D3 Gframework. This paper presents the data service side architecture to gather Data Statistics (DS) on-the-fly, use them in remote DPP methods on query results and gather exact continuous DS for whole tables inside a database. The performance results are showing low running costs for the continuous DS and the feasibility of the service side DPP functionality. Copyright © 2009, Inderscience Publishers.

In order to evaluate the structural complexity of class diagrams systematically and deeply, a new guiding framework of structural complexity is presented. An index system of structural complexity for class diagrams is given. This article discusses the formal description of class diagrams, and presents the method of formally structural complexity metrics for class diagrams from associations, dependencies, aggregations, generalizations and so on. An applicable example proves the feasibility of the presented method.

Among several contour splitting algorithms drop-fall algorithm is convenient and accurate for separating handwritten numerals. A set of drop-fall algorithms can produce four possible cutting paths. Based on four drop-fall algorithms, this paper deals with a pattern-oriented strategy for segmenting touching digits in order to solve the problem of determining which drop-fall algorithm producing the best separation. In this strategy, background region of touching digits is analyzed by using water reservoirs concept at first, and then the classification scheme is developed to identify the pattern of touching digits according to the structural features extracted from the specified background region. To split touching digits, the pattern-oriented strategy is implemented by choosing one suitable drop-fall algorithm applied to the pattern of current touching digits in terms of its performance characteristic. Experimental results show that the proposed strategy is effective for segmentation of handwritten touching digits.

The focus of this paper is a construction of better knowledge base in case-based classifier system. Our knowledge base structure is based on concept lattice where rules are built from its subconcept-superconcept relation. Since the lattice can only be constructed from inputs with binary attributes, descriptive and numeric attributes must be transformed to binary attributes. In this paper, we propose the transformation of numeric attributes to descriptive attributes using fuzzy set theory. We experiment on benchmark data sets, Car and Iris, to determine the performance in term of number of rules used and classification precision. The results show that trend of accuracy is proportional to the size of learning inputs. The number of rules used is relatively small compared with size of training data. Our case-based classifier produces very promising results in practice and can classify the new problem more accurate than traditional classifiers. Copyright 2008 ACM.

As digital ink technology continues to make an impact on the technical classroom, faculty members are exploring the different strategies for using this technology to improve student learning. The purpose of this panel is to demonstrate how faculty members are implementing this technology in engineering and science classrooms at three different institutions: Rose-Hulman institute of technology, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Vermont. The panel is designed to show both experienced pen computing users and those who are new to the field the different ways this versatile technology may be employed. In addition to the demonstrations, the presenters will discuss the pedagogical implications that result from the implementations. faculty who are interested in both the pedagogy and assessment of pen-based computing in the classroom should find the session informative and useful.
