In order to evaluate the structural complexity of class diagrams systematically and deeply, a new guiding framework of structural complexity is presented. An index system of structural complexity for class diagrams is given. This article discusses the formal description of class diagrams, and presents the method of formally structural complexity metrics for class diagrams from associations, dependencies, aggregations, generalizations and so on. Among several contour splitting algorithms drop-fall algorithm is convenient and accurate for separating handwritten numerals. A set of drop-fall algorithms can produce four possible cutting paths. Based on four drop-fall algorithms, this paper deals with a pattern-oriented strategy for segmenting touching digits in order to solve the problem of determining which drop-fall algorithm producing the best separation. In this strategy, background region of touching digits is analyzed by using water reservoirs concept at first, and then the classification scheme is developed to identify the pattern of touching digits according to the structural features extracted from the specified background region. To split touching digits, the pattern-oriented strategy is implemented by choosing one suitable drop-fall algorithm applied to the pattern of current touching digits in terms of its performance characteristic. Experimental results show that the proposed strategy is effective for segmentation of handwritten touching digits.

The focus of this paper is a construction of better knowledge base in case-based classifier system. Our knowledge base structure is based on concept lattice where rules are built from its subconcept-superconcept relation. Since the lattice can only be constructed from inputs with binary attributes, descriptive and numeric attributes must be transformed to binary attributes. In this paper, we propose the transformation of numeric attributes to descriptive attributes using fuzzy set theory. We experiment on benchmark data sets, Car and Iris, to determine the performance in term of number of rules used and classification precision. The results show that trend of accuracy is proportional to the size of learning inputs. The number of rules used is relatively small compared with size of training data. Our case-based classifier produces very promising results in practice and can classify the new problem more accurate than traditional classifiers. Copyright 2008 ACM.

As digital ink technology continues to make an impact on the technical classroom, faculty members are exploring the different strategies for using this technology to improve student learning. The purpose of this panel is to demonstrate how faculty members are implementing this technology in engineering and science classrooms at three different institutions: Rose-Hulman institute of technology, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Vermont. The panel is designed to show both experienced pen computing users and those who are new to the field the different ways this versatile technology may be employed. In addition to the demonstrations, the presenters will discuss the pedagogical implications that result from the implementations. faculty who are interested in both the pedagogy and assessment of pen-based computing in the classroom should find the session informative and useful.

In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, NCLOSED, for mining the N k-closed itemsets with the highest supports for 1 up to a certain k max value. The algorithm adopts best-first search strategy to generate closed itemsets with highest remaining supports. It does not keep closed itemsets mined in main memory to ensure that they are really closed. This is because this algorithm can directly generate closed itemsets. Moreover, duplicated closed itemsets are detected and discarded from this algorithm.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm, TOPK_CLOSED, for mining top-k closed itemsets. This algorithm mines top-k closed itemsets using best-first search. The closed itemsets with the highest supports are firstly found from this algorithm. Consequently, the method quickly finds top-k closed itemsets, which leads to an efficient pruning unnecessary itemsets and stop mining rapidly. In addition, this algorithm can generate closed itemsets without keeping candidates in main memory.

Inspired by Weber's Law, this paper proposes a simple, yet very powerful and robust local descriptor, Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). It is based on the fact that human perception of a pattern depends on not only the change of a stimulus (such as sound, lighting, et al.) but also the original intensity of the stimulus. Specifically, WLD consists of two components: its differential excitation and orientation. A differential excitation is a function of the ratio between two terms: One is the relative intensity differences of its neighbors against a current pixel;the other is the intensity of the current pixel. An orientation is the gradient orientation of the current pixel. For a given image, we use the differential excitation and the orientation components to construct a concatenated WLD histogram feature. Experimental results on Brodatz textures show that WLD impressively outperforms the other classical descriptors (e.g., Gabor). Especially, experimental results on face detection show a promising performance. Although we train only one classifier based on WLD features, the classifier obtains a comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods on MIT+CMU frontal face test set, AR face dataset and CMU profile test set.
