A negative gradient of the image energy is a driving force, which controls the movement of an active contour. We might say that the final shape depends most on how well the image energy is defined. Traditional image energy models produce a limited range of the force and a poor vector filed definition for concave regions. These limitations have been resolved by a gradient vector flow whose major disadvantage is computational time. However, we have proposed a novel modulus maximums image energy that is based on the wavelet transform. It is defined as a cubic spatial interpolation between adjacent modulus maxima. Its negative gradient has a large capture range and forces active contours also into a concave shape. At the end an example of active contour driven by the negative gradient of modulus maximum image energy is presented

Research into design rationale in the past has focused on the representation of reasons and has omitted the connections between design rationales and design artefacts. Without such connections, designers and architects cannot easily assess how changing requirements or designs may affect the system. In this paper, we introduce a model called Architecture Rationale and Element Linkage (AREL) to represent the causal relationship between architecture elements and decisions. We further model AREL as a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) to capture the probabilistic relationships between architecture elements and decisions in an architecture design model. Such probabilistic modelling enables architects to quantitatively predict and diagnose impact of change when part of the requirements or designs are changing. Using a partial design of a cheque image processing system, we illustrate how AREL is used to represent the decision model and how BBN is used to predict and diagnose change in the architecture design. We use a UML tool to capture the AREL model and a BBN tool to compute the probabilities of change impact.

A5 encryption/decryption algorithm depends on the use of linear feedback shift registers (LFSR) in order to generate the key-stream bits. The A5-1 algorithm uses three different LFSRs with a majority function to add non-linearity, while A5-2 uses four LFSRs. In this paper a new multi-configurable LFSR design variant of the A5 algorithm is proposed, in which the inverse taps of the LFSR are used to generate the output key-stream bits. The new LFSR design, called a complex LFSR, techniques can be effectively applied in software or hardware to a communications stream to provide a low cost and high speed encryption capability

Testing plays an important role in the maintenance of component based software development. Test adequacy for component testing is one of the hardest issues for component testing. To tackle this problem, it is a natural idea to apply mutation testing, which is a fault-based testing method used for measuring test adequacy, for component contracts, whose aim is to improve the testability of the component. Though powerful, mutation testing is usually very computation-expensive, as many mutants need to be produced and executed in mutation testing. In this paper, we propose a contract-based mutation technique for testing components. Based on the discordance between contracts and specification, our approach employs a set of high level contract mutation operators. The experimental results show that these operators can greatly reduce the number of mutants compared with traditional mutation operators. At the same time, the contract-based mutation using our contract mutation operators can provide almost the same ability as that of using traditional mutation operators. Moreover, effective test suite can be produced to reduce the maintenance effort.

A mobile multi-agent system is proposed to create solutions for the university course timetabling problem. It is composed of four kinds of agents: (mobile) Course Agents, and (stationary) Signboard, Publisher and Interface Agents. The key strength of this new approach is to use a fundamental attribute of Agents that of autonomy. This autonomy is manifested in this work in the Course Agent. Each Course Agent in the system is responsible for negotiating with other Course Agents to find satisfactory class resource for the course they represent. This negotiation occurs initially indirectly through a Signboard Asent. A set of rules is used to structure Asent-to-Asent negotiation to find mutually acceptable class resources. The scheduling problem is executed in a natural parallel structure using one Signboard Agent to represent a weekday. The experimental results show that this new approach has merit and can lead to acceptable and flexible solutions to the course timetabling problem. Copyright © IICAI 2005.

Management of mobile/embedded XML Web services has to take into account specifics of their execution environments, including scarce run-time memory, relatively low processing power, limited available electrical power, and slow wireless links. It also has to handle distinctive situations, such as context-sensitive operation and relatively frequent run-time communication disturbances or even disconnections. The existing solutions for management of non-mobile/non-embedded XML Web services do not address these characteristic issues. We have been working on a management system appropriate for mobile/embedded XML Web services. We identified ten new requirements of such a system, additional to the requirements of management systems for non-mobile/non-embedded XML Web services. To address them, we developed new versions of our Web service offerings infrastructure (WSOI) and Web service offerings language (WSOL). Our solutions are being validated on case studies and verified through development of proof-of-concept prototypes.

We propose a low complexity frequency diversity technique for OFDM to improve its error performance in a frequency-selective wireless channel. Recently, linear precoding has been proposed to achieve frequency diversity (multipath diversity) in OFDM, which overcomes the problem of channel nulls (deep fades in frequency-domain). However, currently reported precoding techniques for OFDM have high computational complexity due to associated maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding or pseudo-inverse of large matrices (linear decoding). In the proposed diversity enhanced-OFDM (DE-OFDM), the decoding complexity is minimal as maximum ratio combining (MRC) is incorporated at the receiver to generate a decision variable for each repeatedly transmitted symbol over multiple subcarriers. Moreover, we show that DE-OFDM does not cause any effective data rate (throughput) loss as DE-OFDM using a higher-order modulation scheme (thus the same data rate as conventional OFDM) can provide a better error performance. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of DE-OFDM in achieving frequency diversity benefit with low receiver complexity in multipath (frequency-selective) channels. DE-OFDM also outperforms the previously proposed ICI self-cancellation schemes in a frequency-selective fading channel with small frequency offset error.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of space-time coded (ST-coded) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with carrier frequency offset (CFO) in a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the symbol error probability (SEP) for M-PSK and M-QAM modulation schemes. The SEP expressions derived are valid and exact for OFDM systems with highly frequency-selective wireless channels where the subcarrier channel responses are i.i.d. with Rayleigh fading. Also, for the case where imperfect channel knowledge is used for space-time decoding, we derive expressions for constellation phase-rotation and post-equalized SINR (signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio) degradation due to CFO. The numerical results demonstrate the sensitivity of the receiver error performance to CFO in ST-coded OFDM systems.

engineering a large software project involves tracking the impact of development and maintenance changes on the software performance. An approach for tracking the impact is regression benchmarking, which involves automated benchmarking and evaluation of performance at regular intervals. Regression benchmarking must tackle the nondeterminism inherent to contemporary computer systems and execution environments and the impact of the nondeterminism on the results. On the example of a fully automated regression benchmarking environment for the mono open-source project, we show how the problems associated with nondeterminism can be tackled using statistical methods.

Several challenges and problems of developing, using and maintaining object-oriented application frameworks have been identified. It was discovered that companies attempting to build or use large-scale reusable framework often fail unless they recognize and resolve challenges such as development effort, learning curve, integratability, maintainability, validation, defect removal, efficiency, and lack of standards. Framework documentation plays a major role in facing the above challenges. It directly affects the learning curve, maintainability, and defect removal aspects of the application frameworks. We have studied various documenting approaches and concluded that the current approaches are not very effective in overcoming the above challenges, especially on the efficiency problem. So, in this paper, we are going to apply machine learning using case-based reasoning (CBR) and rule-based reasoning (RBR) to framework documentation. We come up with a documentation architecture that combines both techniques in order to come up with improved framework documentation.
