Efficient Solving of Large Non-linear Arithmetic Constraint Systems with Complex Boolean Structure

In order to facilitate automated reasoning about large Boolean combinations of non-linear arithmetic constraints involving transcendental functions, we provide a tight integration of recent SAT solving techniques with interval-based arithmetic constraint solving. Our approach deviates substantially from lazy theorem proving approaches in that it directly controls arithmetic constraint propagation from the SAT solver rather than delegating arithmetic decisions to a subordinate solver. Through this tight integration, all the algorithmic enhancements that were instrumental to the enormous performance gains recently achieved in propositional SAT solving carry over smoothly to the rich domain of non-linear arithmetic constraints. As a consequence, our approach is able to handle large constraint systems with extremely complex Boolean structure, involving Boolean combinations of multiple thousand arithmetic constraints over some thousands of variables.

As the volume and variety of information sources, especially on the World Wide Web (WWW), continue to grow, the requirements imposed on search applications are steadily increasing. The amount of available data is growing and so do the user demands. Search application should provide the users with accurate, sensible responses to their requests. It is difficult to provide information that accurately matches user information needs. Search effectiveness can be seen as the accuracy of matching user information needs against the retrieved information. There are problems emerging: users often do not present search queries in the form that optimally represents their information need, the measure of a document's relevance is often highly subjective between different users, and information sources might contain heterogeneous documents, in multiple formats and the representation of documents is not unified. This contribution presents a proposal to improve web search effectiveness via evolutionary optimization of the Boolean and vector search queries based on individual user models. © ICS AS CR 2007.

An experimental scenario for an e-health monitoring system (EHMS) that uses an service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a model for deploying, discovering, implementing, managing, and invoking e-health services, is presented. The grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common backbone for stakeholders to improve interoperation and collaboration. A remote EHMS would monitor a patient's condition by taking a blood pressure reading and relaying that information to hospitals or e-health applications. The health monitoring system focuses on a particular aspect of patient care, such as pregnancy, cancer, heart disease, by using the standard format readings from the monitoring system which is managed as specified by the medical schema.

This paper reports on the efforts of an ITiCSE 2007 working group with the aim of producing a publicly available, searchable, tagable, Web 2.0-style repository of short debugging videos. This repository may be accessed from http://***/. The videos are aimed at novice Java programmers who may need help debugging when none is available (e.g. in the middle of the night before the homework is due). However, it could also be used by instructors of introductory programming. Here we discuss our motivation in creating this repository and detail the process we followed and the products we produced.

In this work, a new mathematical modeling approach is proposed for the representation of the speech and audio signals. This approach is based on the generation of the so called predefined signature sequence (PSS) and predefined envelope sequence (PES) sets. After the generation process of the PSS and PES sets, they are clustered by effective k-means clustering algorithm and the PSS and PES are redefined by using these centroids. By using this approach, the drawbacks by means of the size of the sets, speed of the reconstruction process (computational complexity) which arise in the proposed methods previously are highly eliminated. In spite of these improvements, the initial results proved that, the quality of the reconstructed signals remains within the limitations of the acceptable hearing quality.

A novel method is proposed to model ECG signals by means of "predefined signature and envelope vector sets (PSEVS)." On a frame basis, an ECG signal is reconstructed by multiplying three model parameters, namely, predefined signature vector ( PSV) R," "predefined envelope vector ( PEV) K," and frame-scaling coefficient (FSC). All the PSVs and PEVs are labeled and stored in their respective sets to describe the signal in the reconstruction process. In this case, an ECG signal frame is modeled by means of the members of these sets labeled with indices R andKand the frame-scaling coefficient, in the least mean square sense. The proposed method is assessed through the use of percentage root-mean-square difference (PRD) and visual inspection measures. Assessment results reveal that the proposed method provides significant data compression ratio (CR) with low-level PRD values while preserving diagnostic information. This fact significantly reduces the bandwidth of communication in telediagnosis operations.

We consider the iterated belief change that occurs following an alternating sequence of actions and observations. At each instant, an agent has some beliefs about the action that occurs as well as beliefs about the resulting state of the world. We represent such problems by a sequence of ranking functions, so an agent assigns a quantitative plausibility value to every action arid every state at each point in time. The resulting formalism is able to represent fallible knowledge, erroneous perception, exogenous actions, and failed actions. We illustrate that our framework is a generalization of several existing approaches to belief change, and it appropriately captures the non-elementary interaction between belief update and belief revision. The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

We present a novel approach for discretely optimizing contours on the surface of a triangle mesh. This is achieved through the use of a minimum ratio cycle (MRC) algorithm, where we compute a contour having the minimal ratio between a novel contour energy term and the length of the contour. Given an initial contour, we seek to find the optimal contour within a prescribed search domain. The domain of admissible contours is modeled by a weighted acyclic edge graph, where nodes in the graph correspond to directed edges in the mesh. The acyclicity of this graph allows for an efficient computation of the MRC. To further improve the result, the algorithm may be run on a refined mesh to allow for smoother contours that can cut across mesh faces. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in postprocessing for mesh segmentation
