In order to guide the design of a new multi-robot system, we seek to evaluate two different designs of audio direction sensor. We have implemented a simple but useful audio propagation simulator as an extension to the stage multi-robot simulator. We use the simulator to evaluate the use of audio signals to improve the performance of a team of robots at a prototypical search task. The results indicate that, for this task, (i) audio can significantly improve team performance, and (ii) binary discrimination of the direction of a sound source (left/right) performs no worse than high-resolution direction information. This result suggests that a simple two-microphone audio system would be useful for our real robots, without advanced signal processing to find sound direction

In this article a new approach to planning of a nonholonomic motion is presented. A flexible, intelligent planner based on a static map and the topology of the robot's environment has been developed. The approach uses 'particles' to construct automatically a path between two given locations. The generated path is a smooth trajectory, where the length of the path is kept at a minimum and obstacles are avoided. This concept applies to robots meeting the restrictions of a Dubin's car (nonholonomic robot that can only move forward). The Hamilton canonical equations and generalized Hamilton canonical equations and their the contravariant algebraic forms for mechanico-electrical systems are obtained. The Lie algebraic structure and the Poisson's integral theory of Lagrange mechanico-electrical systems are derived. The Lie algebraic structure admitted and Poisson's integral theory of the Lagrange-Maxwell mechanico-electrical systems are presented. Two examples are presented to illustrate these results.

Non-Noether symmetries and conservative quantities of nonholonomic nonconservative dynamical systems are investigated in this paper. Based on the relationships among motion, nonconservative forces, nonholonomic constrained forces and Lagrangian, non-Noether symmetries and Lutzky conservative quantities are presented for nonholonomic nonconservative dynamical systems. The relation between non-Noether symmetry and Noether symmetry is discussed and it is further shown that non-Noether conservative quantities can be obtained by a complete set of Noether invariants. Finally, an example is given to illustrate these results.

This work describes and compares two different methods for identifying growth patterns in preterm infants during the second year of development. One method is based on creating anatomical atlases from the population of subjects within each timepoint and using the transformation between atlases at different timepoints to create average volume change maps. The second method uses multiple longitudinal intra-subject registrations to produce individual volume change maps. These maps are then transformed into a common coordinate system and averaged with the method used for atlas creation. We show that there is a reasonable level of agreement between the two methods and both generate plausible growth patterns implying that either could be used to track development during this period of growth
