Biohybrid approaches (where living and engineered components are combined) provide new opportunities for advancing animal behaviour research and its applications. This review article and accompanying special issue explores how different types of novel technologies can be used in the field of animal behaviour from three perspectives: (1) comprehension, (2) application and (3) integration. Under the perspective of ‘comprehension,’ we present examples of how technologies like virtual animals or robots can be used in experimental settings to interact with living animals in a standardized manner. Such interactions can advance our understanding of fundamental topics such as mate choice, social learning and collective behaviour. Under ‘application,’ we investigate the potential for technologies to monitor, react and interact with animals in a variety of scenarios. For example, we discuss how drones can be used to keep large herbivores away from valuable crops and robotic predators to deter invasive species. Under ‘integration,’ we discuss possibilities for the coexistence of engineered and biological systems, augmenting the capacity or resilience of either or both components. Integration can be physical, for example, livestock can have sensors sit in their inner body for temperature monitoring, or within the environment, where sensors or robots monitor and interact with animals, such as a short-term earthquake forecasting method. Based upon these three themes, we discuss and classify existing biohybrid animal behaviour research, including the four articles included in our special issue. We also consider the ethics of this emerging field, highlight the advantages and potential issues associated with using technologies to create biohybrid systems and emphasize how such technologies can support the advancement of animal behaviour research. © 2025 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour

Object-level data association and pose estimation play a fundamental role in semantic SLAM, which remain unsolved due to the lack of robust and accurate algorithms. In this work, we propose an ensemble data associate strategy for integrating the parametric and nonparametric statistic tests. By exploiting the nature of different statistics, our method can effectively aggregate the information of different measurements, and thus significantly improve the robustness and accuracy of data association. We then present an accurate object pose estimation framework, in which an outliers-robust centroid and scale estimation algorithm and an object pose initialization algorithm are developed to help improve the optimality of pose estimation results. Furthermore, we build a SLAM system that can generate semi-dense or lightweight object-oriented maps with a monocular camera. Extensive experiments are conducted on three publicly available datasets and a real scenario. The results show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in accuracy and robustness. The source code is available on https://***/yanmin-wu/ EAO-SLAM. Intense harmonics with time-varying orbital angular momentum from relativistic plasma mirrors

In this Letter using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical considerations we demonstrate intense high-order plasma surface harmonics carrying a time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) - the self-torque. We show that by using two laser beams with different OAMs l1 and l2 and a certain delay between each other and shooting them obliquely on an overdense plasma target, one can generate harmonics with OAM spanning nl1 to nl2, where n is the order of the harmonic. Such intense self-torqued harmonics can offer new possibilities in ultrafast spectroscopy. © 2021, CC BY.

Whether SiC2 is a parent species, that is formed in the photosphere or as a by-product of high-temperature dust formation, or a daughter species, formed in a chemistry driven by the photodestruction of parent species in the outer envelope, has been debated for a long time. Here, we analyze the ALMA observations of four SiC2 transitions in the CSEs of three C-rich AGB stars (AI Vol, II Lup, and RAFGL 4211), and found that SiC2 exhibits an annular, shell-like distribution in these targets, suggesting that SiC2 can be a daughter species in the CSEs of carbon-rich AGB stars. Particle swarm optimization system based on the distributed architecture has shown its efficiency for static optimization and has not been studied to solve dynamic multiobjective problems (DMOPs). When solving DMOP, tracking the best solutions over time and ensuring good exploitation and exploration are the main challenging tasks. This study proposes a novel Dynamic Pareto bi-level Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (DPb-MOPSO) algorithm including two parallel optimization levels. At the first level, all solutions are managed in a single search space. When a dynamic change is successfully detected, the Pareto ranking operator is used to enable a multi-swarm subdivisions and processing which drives the second level of enhanced exploitation. A dynamic handling strategy based on random detectors is used to track the changes of the objective function due to time-varying parameters. A response strategy consisting in re-evaluate all unimproved solutions and replacing them with newly generated ones is also implemented. Inverted generational distance, mean inverted generational distance, and hypervolume difference metrics are used to assess the DPb-MOPSO performances. All quantitative results are analyzed using Friedman's analysis while the Lyapunov theorem is used for stability analysis. Compared with several multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, the DPb-MOPSO is robust in solving 21 complex problems over a range of changes in both the Pareto optimal set and Pareto optimal front. For 13 UDF and ZJZ functions, DPb-MOPSO can solve 8/13 and 7/13 on IGD and HVD with moderate changes. For the 8 FDA and dMOP benchmarks, DPb-MOPSO was able to resolve 4/8 with severe change on MIGD, and 5/8 for moderate and slight changes. However, for the 3 kind of environmental changes, DPb-MOPSO assumes 4/8 of the solving function on IGD and HVD. © 2021, CC BY.

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA, located at 4410 m above sea level in Sichuan Province, China. The high-altitude location and the frequent occurrence of thunderstorms make LHAASO suitable to study the effects of atmospheric electric fields (AEFs) on cosmic ray air showers. By analyzing the data of KM2A, the flux variations of cosmic ray air showers during thunderstorms are studied. The total number of shower events that meet the KM2A trigger conditions increases significantly during thunderstorms, with the maximum value exceeding 20%. The variations of trigger rates are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. To understand the shower rate changes, the flux variations of ground-level secondary particles are analyzed. We find the average number of particles per shower event increases significantly in strong AEFs. Due to the acceleration by AEFs, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold increases, and then more shower events satisfy the trigger conditions, resulting in the shower rate increases. At the same time, the secondary particles carrying positive and negative charges will be deflected in opposite direction in AEFs, and this effect increases with the zenith angle. Real-time system identification using deep learning for linear processes with application to unmanned aerial vehicles

This paper proposes a novel parametric identification approach for linear systems using Deep Learning (DL) and the Modified Relay Feedback Test (MRFT). The proposed methodology utilizes MRFT to reveal distinguishing frequencies about an unknown process;which are then passed to a trained DL model to identify the underlying process parameters. The presented approach guarantees stability and performance in the identification and control phases respectively, and requires few seconds of observation data to infer the dynamic system parameters. Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) attitude and altitude dynamics were used in simulation and experimentation to verify the presented methodology. Results show the effectiveness and real-time capabilities of the proposed approach, which outperforms the conventional Prediction Error Method in terms of accuracy, robustness to biases, computational efficiency and data requirements. Detection of LDDoS attacks based on TCP connection parameters

Low-rate application layer distributed denial of service (LDDoS) attacks are both powerful and stealthy. They force vulnerable webservers to open all available connections to the adversary, denying resources to real users. Mitigation advice focuses on solutions that potentially degrade quality of service for legitimate connections. Furthermore, without accurate detection mechanisms, distributed attacks can bypass these defences. A methodology for detection of LDDoS attacks, based on characteristics of malicious TCP flows, is proposed within this paper. Research will be conducted using combinations of two datasets: one generated from a simulated network, the other from the publically available CIC DoS dataset. Both contain the attacks slowread, slowheaders and slowbody, alongside legitimate web browsing. TCP flow features are extracted from all connections. Experimentation was carried out using six supervised AI algorithms to categorise attack from legitimate flows. Decision trees and k-NN accurately classified up to 99.99% of flows, with exceptionally low false positive and false negative rates, demonstrating the potential of AI in LDDoS detection. Wireless sensor networks play an important role in many applications that require networks that could be used in emergency and rescue operations or in disasters such as forest fire. Forest fires are costing millions of dollars in addition to the big losses of trees and air pollution that is spreading to the neighbouring countries. In such disaster, an effective and reliable routing protocol in terms of energy consumption is much needed for continuous monitoring. This paper presents a new routing protocol named Power Consumption Efficient-Optimized Link State Routing (PCE-OLSR) protocol in the forest fire detection. PCE-OLSR protocol exploits the energy of the nodes that is located in the fire zone in order to fully utilize its energy and consequently preserved the energy of other nodes in the network. The proposed PCE-OLSR protocol has been evaluated and compared with the traditional OLSR protocol in terms of packet delivery ratio, end to end delay, energy consumption and routing overhead. Results have shown that PCE-OLSR performs better than its comparative. © 2019 IEEE.
