Phase Transition to Chaos in Complex Ecosystems with Nonreciprocal Species-Resource Interactions

Nonreciprocal interactions between microscopic constituents can profoundly shape the large-scale properties of complex systems. Here, we investigate the effects of nonreciprocity in the context of theoretical ecology by analyzing a generalization of MacArthur’s consumer-resource model with asymmetric interactions between species and resources. Using a mixture of analytic cavity calculations and numerical simulations, we show that such ecosystems generically undergo a phase transition to chaotic dynamics as the amount of nonreciprocity is increased. We analytically construct the phase diagram for this model and show that the emergence of chaos is controlled by a single quantity: the ratio of surviving species to surviving resources. We also numerically calculate the Lyapunov exponents in the chaotic phase and carefully analyze finite-size effects. Our findings show how nonreciprocal interactions can give rise to complex and unpredictable dynamical behaviors even in the simplest ecological consumer-resource models.

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging machine learning paradigm for preserving data privacy. However, diverse client hardware often has varying computation resources. Such system heterogeneity limits the participation of resource-constrained clients in FL, and hence degrades the global model accuracy. To enable heterogeneous clients to participate in and contribute to FL training, previous works tackle this problem by assigning customized sub-models to individual clients with model pruning, distillation, or low-rank based techniques. Unfortunately, the global model trained by these methods still encounters performance degradation due to heterogeneous sub-model aggregation. Besides, most methods are heuristic-based and lack convergence analysis. In this work, we propose the FedLMT framework to bridge the performance gap, by assigning clients with a homogeneous pre-factorized low-rank model to substantially reduce resource consumption without conducting heterogeneous aggregation. We theoretically prove that the convergence of the low-rank model can guarantee the convergence of the original full model. To further meet clients' personalized resource needs, we extend FedLMT to pFedLMT, by separating model parameters into common and custom ones. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to verify our theoretical analysis and show that FedLMT and pFedLMT outperform other baselines with much less communication and computation costs. Tracking a person with an onboard camera is a very difficult and perhaps technically impossible if one camera is used. In this regard, real-life projects use a series of cameras to achieve the task. The advent of camera installed drone technology has made it possible for researchers and designers to resolve the tracking issues of a single or multiple stagnant devices. This paper presents a method that makes it possible for a drone to recognize hand gestures as control mechanism and follow the person who control it. Furthermore, the method assists in drone object detection using an integrated depth camera that provides video capturing. The OpenCV and Tello were used in this project. A stabilized depth video is for use with current person trackers like the OpenCV tracker. The estimated Tello pose deduced from vision to stabilize the depth image by warping it to a virtual-static camera. This method allows the Tello to obtain not only the tracked person's position and orientation but also their full body pose, which can then be used, for instance, to recognize hand gestures and alter the Tello's behavior. This work has a potential of contributing or enhancing cutting-edge applications such as hands-free photography and videography. © 2024 IEEE.

Next Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation has become a crucial task in Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs), which provide personalized recommendations by predicting the user’s next check-in locations. Commonly used models including Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been widely explored. However, these models face significant challenges, including the difficulty of capturing the hierarchical and tree-like structure of POIs in Euclidean space and the sparsity problem inherent in POI recommendations. To address these challenges, we propose a Hyperbolic Variational Graph Auto-Encoder (HVGAE) for next POI recommendation. Specifically, we utilize a Hyperbolic Graph Convolutional Network (Hyperbolic GCN) to model hierarchical structures and tree-like relationships by converting node embeddings from euclidean space to hyperbolic space. Then we use Variational Graph Auto-Encoder (VGAE) to convert node embeddings to probabilistic distributions, enhancing the capture of deeper latent features and providing a more robust model structure. Furthermore, we combine the Mamba4Rec recommender and Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE) and propose Rotary Position Mamba (RPMamba) to effectively utilize POI embeddings rich in sequential information, which improves the accuracy of the next POI recommendation. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the HVGAE model. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) is one of the paradigm changes in cybersecurity, from the traditional perimeter-based model to perimeterless. This article studies the core concepts of ZTA, its beginning, a few use cases and future trends. Emphasising the always-verify and least privilege access, some key tenets of ZTA have grown to be integration technologies like Identity Management, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and real-time analytics. ZTA is expected to strengthen cloud environments, education, work environments (including from home) while controlling other risks like lateral movement and insider threats. Despite ZTA’s benefits, it comes with challenges in the form of complexity, performance overhead and vulnerabilities in the control plane. These require phased implementation and continuous refinement to keep up with evolving organisational needs and threat landscapes. Emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will further automate policy enforcement and threat detection in keeping up with dynamic cyber threats.

Business process simulation (BPS) is a powerful tool for estimating process performance across different scenarios, offering critical support for organizational process redesign and optimization. Traditional BPS approaches predominantly rely on a control-flow-first perspective by enriching a process model with simulation parameters. While these approaches seem suitable for capturing centrally orchestrated processes, such as those managed by workflow systems, they fall short of accurately reflecting real-world processes characterized by decentralized decision-making and distinct resource behaviors. To overcome this limitation, we propose AgentSimulator, a resource-first BPS approach that discovers a multi-agent system from an event log. By modeling the distinct behaviors and interaction patterns of individual resources, AgentSimulator effectively simulates the underlying process. Our approach automatically identifies whether resource behavior is rather orchestrated or autonomous, adapting to the specific decision-making structure of the process. Experimental results reveal that AgentSimulator achieves state-of-the-art simulation accuracy while ensuring high adaptability to various process types.

Powered by the massive data generated by the blossom of mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) devices, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have developed both in accuracy and size in recent years. Conventional cloud-based DNN training incurs rapidly-increasing data and model transmission overheads as well as privacy issues. Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a promising solution by facilitating DNN model training on edge servers at the network edge. However, edge servers often suffer from constrained resources and need to collaborate on DNN training. Unfortunately, managed by different telecoms, edge servers cannot properly collaborate with each other without incentives and trust. In this paper, we introduce PipeEdge, a scheme that promotes collaborative edge training between edge servers by introducing incentives and trust based on blockchain. Under the PipeEdge scheme, edge servers can hire trustworthy workers for pipelined DNN training tasks based on model parallelism. We implement PipeEdge and evaluate it comprehensively with four different DNN models. The results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art schemes by up to 173.98% with negligible overheads. © 2023 ACM.

In industrial manufacturing, visual anomaly detection is critical for maintaining product quality by detecting and preventing production anomalies. Anomaly detection methods based on knowledge distillation demonstrate promising performance in addressing the unpredictability and diversity of anomalies. However, they suffer from a lack of effective guidance from anomaly-free priors when handling anomalous features and underutilize multi-scale features during the segmentation scoring stage, yielding suboptimal detection results. To alleviate these issues, we propose an Anomaly-free Prior Guided knowledge distillation (APG) for industrial anomaly detection. Firstly, it filters the abnormal features by training the de-noising target network with knowledge distillation structure. Concurrently, we propose the Prior Perception Propagation Module (P3M), which extracts more efficient anomaly-free features by imposing constraints on anomalous features. Secondly, we propose the Multi-scale Prior Guided Fusion Module (MPGFM) to improve anomaly detection accuracy by utilizing anomaly-free features from the target network as priors to guide the generation and fusion of cross-scale differential features. Finally, the Global Perception Enhancement Module (GPEM) is proposed to construct an anomaly scoring network, leveraging comprehensive scene features to enhance the detection and localization performance of numerous small-target anomalies in industrial manufacturing. Extensive experiments on the MVTecAD and BTAD datasets show that the proposed method demonstrates a consistent and significant outperformance against competing methods. © 2024 IEEE.
