This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of generative models (GANs, VAEs, DMs, and LLMs) used to synthesize various medical data types, including imaging (dermoscopic, mammographic, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and X-ray), text, time-series, and tabular data (EHR). Unlike previous narrowly focused reviews, our study encompasses a broad array of medical data modalities and explores various generative models. Our search strategy queries databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and ArXiv, focusing on recent works from January 2021 to November 2023, excluding reviews and perspectives. This period emphasizes recent advancements beyond GANs, which have been extensively covered previously. The survey reveals insights from three key aspects: (1) Synthesis applications and purpose of synthesis, (2) generation techniques, and (3) evaluation methods. It highlights clinically valid synthesis applications, demonstrating the potential of synthetic data to tackle diverse clinical requirements. While conditional models incorporating class labels, segmentation masks and image translations are prevalent, there is a gap in utilizing prior clinical knowledge and patient-specific context, suggesting a need for more personalized synthesis approaches and emphasizing the importance of tailoring generative approaches to the unique characteristics of medical data. Additionally, there is a significant gap in using synthetic data beyond augmentation, such as for validation and evaluation of downstream medical AI models. The survey uncovers that the lack of standardized evaluation methodologies tailored to medical images is a barrier to clinical application, underscoring the need for in-depth evaluation approaches, benchmarking, and comparative studies to promote openness and collaboration. © 2024, CC BY.

Mathematics is often considered a boring and challenging subject, which makes it difficult for educators to attract marginalized children to learn and embrace it. Therefore, this article discusses the development and evaluation of a mobile game application called Math-Hero, designed to enhance marginalized children's mathematical skills through an interactive, engaging, and heartfelt learning environment. To examine the effectiveness of Math-Hero, an online survey method was employed to collect data from 32 respondents. The evaluation model was developed following the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Three constructs - Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), and Intention to Adopt (ITA) - were examined quantitatively using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Additionally, qualitative data were analyzed using thematic and sentiment analyses. The results of quantitative analyses indicate that Math-Hero is easy to use, beneficial, and the users intend to use it in the future. Its ease of use has a positive correlation with usefulness and intention to adopt it. The sentiment analysis also supports the findings, as most of the users have a positive and neutral perception of Math-Hero. Although Math-Hero has shown promise in improving marginalized children's mathematical skills, there is still room for improvement to make it even more robust and effective in the future. Moreover, further research is necessary to empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of Math-Hero among diverse marginalized communities, beyond just Semai youngsters. © 2023 IEEE.

Book flipping videos present a distinctive challenge for information extraction, requiring the identification of frames with clear text visibility during dynamic page turns. This paper introduces a novel approach to frame classification in book flipping videos, leveraging the combined effect of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs). In particular, a CNN-LSTM model is employed, where a pre-trained CNN captures spatial features, and LSTMs extend the model’s capability to distinguish temporal dependencies critical for page turn detection. Unlike conventional methods, this approach processes entire video sequences, enabling the model to learn intricate Frame of Interest (FoI) detection features indicative of page turns and text visibility. The proposed model offers improved interpretability, effectively classifying frames without compromising transparency. The research opens avenues for automated book digitization, digital library creation, and educational technology applications, enhancing information extraction and reliability from book flipping videos.

Quantum information processing is more complex than classical counterpart because of the No-Cloning theorem, decoherence, and issues detecting quantum states. Building a quantum computer without error detection and correction module is challenging. To overcome this challenge, qubit error correction codes are implemented. Inadequate error detection and correction codes have been the downfall of earlier attempts to encode quantum information, leading to disrupted qubit transmission. Qubit information is decohered by circuit noise. Unfortunately, the principal qubit error, phase flip error is not corrected by existing qubit error correction methods. In this study, we proposed Quantum Error Detection and Correction scheme (QEDC) to keep qubit in a coherent state. Used S gates, unitary gates, 10 CNOT gates, and Hadamard gates spanning on 4 physical and 1 logical qubits over the IBM Quantum Experience Machine. We found that the error probability is reduced to 7.91% owing to the efficiency of the quantum information encoding and phase flip control. Furthermore, we proposed Error Corrected Quantum Convolution Neural Network (EQCNN) for Image Classification. EQCNN combat and correct qubit errors that occur during the image processing. EQCNN outperformed over Earth Observatory (EO) dataset, EuroSAT and achieved an impressive results of 99.3% accuracy, 98.9% F1-score, 96.73% precision, and 98.4% recall.

Machine unlearning involves retracting data records and reducing their influence on trained models, aiding user privacy protection, at a significant computational cost potentially. Weight perturbation-based unlearning is common but typically modifies parameters globally. We propose fine-grained Top-K and Random-k parameters perturbed inexact machine unlearning that address the privacy needs while keeping the computational costs tractable. However, commonly used training data are independent and identically distributed, for inexact machine unlearning, current metrics are inadequate in quantifying unlearning degree that occurs after unlearning. To address this quantification issue, we introduce SPD-GAN, which subtly perturbs data distribution targeted for unlearning. Then, we evaluate unlearning degree by measuring the performance difference of the models on the perturbed unlearning data before and after unlearning. Furthermore, to demonstrate efficacy, we tackle the challenge of evaluating machine unlearning by assessing model generalization across unlearning and remaining data. To better assess the unlearning effect and model generalization, we propose novel metrics, namely, the forgetting rate and memory retention rate. By implementing these innovative techniques and metrics, we achieve computationally efficacious privacy protection in machine learning applications without significant sacrifice of model performance. Federated learning (FL) is an emerging machine learning paradigm that allows distributed participants to train a global model collaboratively. In edge networks, FL involves numerous edge devices updating the local models with the assistance of a central server while keeping the local data on the devices. However, edge devices are commonly resource-limited while neural network models used in FL require significant resource consumption to reach a satisfactory accuracy. Moreover, different devices are various in terms of system capabilities, and employing a uniform model on all devices leads to the derogation of model accuracy. Several pioneer work integrate model pruning techniques into the FL process and focus on reducing the resource consumption on edge devices, whereas neglecting the impact of model generality on accuracy. In our work, we propose FedACP, an efficient FL approach with adaptive channel pruning for edge devices to achieve better resource-accuracy trade-offs. Specifically, we design a two-phase channel pruning approach to adaptively prune local models, in which both the resource constraints and model generalities are taken into consideration. In addition, we also design an aggregation algorithm for aggregating heterogeneous local models produced by the two-phase channel pruning approach. To evaluate the performance of the FedACP, we implement it with a real FL framework FedML and compare it with several state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that FedACP achieves better model accuracy while simultaneously reducing 22.41% to 27.34% model parameters. © 2022 IEEE.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

Avoiding exp(Rmax) scaling in RLHF through Preference-based Exploration

Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) has emerged as a pivotal technique for large language model (LLM) alignment. This paper studies the setting of online RLHF and focus on improving sample efficiency. All existing algorithms in online RLHF, whether doing passive exploration or active exploration, suffer from a sample complexity that scales exponentially with the scale of the reward function. This fundamental limitation hinders their effectiveness in scenarios with heavily skewed preferences, e.g. questions with a unique correct solution. To address this, we introduce Self-Exploring Preference-Incentive Online Preference Optimization (SE-POPO), an online RLHF algorithm that for the first time achieves a sample complexity that scales polynomially with the reward scale, answering an open problem raised by Xie et al. (2024). Theoretically, we demonstrate that the sample complexity of SE-POPO dominates that of existing exploration algorithms. Empirically, our systematic evaluation confirms that SE-POPO is more sample-efficient than both exploratory and non-exploratory baselines, in two primary application scenarios of RLHF as well as on public benchmarks, marking a significant step forward in RLHF algorithm design. Hepatitis C is the liver's festering that can lead to severe liver damage, usually caused by the hepatitis C virus. Hepatitis C has different stages. It is tough to cure in it's last stages; at the same time, it is expensive and painful process. The current research, however, is an alternative precaution to this issue. Hepatitis C can be predicted early by using multiple factors. The dataset related to hepatitis C was not publicly available. To overcome this challenge, the healthy and HCV effected samples were collected from different hospitals in Punjab. A questionnaire based survey was taken including different HCV related factor i.e. gender, weight loss, hives/ rashes, swelling, jaundice, drug addiction history, hepatic encephalopa-thy (drowsiness, slurred speech), Ascites (fluid buildup in belly/ abdomen), spider angiomas (Spiderlike blood vessels), shared syringe usage, medical history, and severeness. Different cleaning, scaling, and feature selection techniques were applied to collect the best feature data. After selection, various machine learning algorithms were applied. Random forest, KNN, Decision Tree, SVC, and MLP were used, but MLP yielded optimal results in all classification algorithms. We have gained 95.9 % accuracy when tested on unknown data based on the MLP model. As the predictions' results were satisfactory, it would be helpful for the people and act as a critical awareness.

Affective picture databases provide a standardized set of images to elicit controlled and consistent emotional responses in research participants. They are a valuable tool for studying various emotion-related phenomena across several research domains. These domains include emotion perception, emotion regulation, and the neural basis of emotion. However, affective picture databases have diverse schemas, structures, and content, making them difficult to use. Searching and retrieving optimal pictures relevant to affective stimulation may be challenging and time-consuming. In this context, we surveyed domain experts about their practices and experiences working with affective multimedia databases such as IAPS, NAPS, OASIS, GAPED, and others. The survey identified a need for novel data observatory software. This finding motivates the authors’ intention to develop and validate such software platform that relies on AI. Such a platform would describe better, retrieve, and integrate various semi-structured affective multimedia datasets. The results prominently indicate the overwhelming dissatisfaction regarding stimuli content diversity and cultural bias, specifically regarding emotional and semantic context. The main driver of satisfaction from users of existing automated retrieval software is the quality of semantic descriptors available. This points to the direction AI should take in novel data observatory software. This survey follows up on a similar survey conducted ten years ago and explores the differences in researchers’ opinions and experiences during that time.
