Liberated Arabic Handwritten Text Recognition using Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks

Arabic script is exhibited in a cursive style, which is a departure from the norm in many common languages, and the shapes of letters are contingent on their positions within words. The form of the first letter is influenced by the subsequent letter, middle letters are shaped by both preceding and succeeding letters, and the shape of the final letter is determined by the preceding letter. Additionally, certain letters are found to have strikingly similar shapes, making Arabic text recognition a formidable challenge in computer vision. The challenge of detecting and recognizing Arabic handwritten text is addressed in this paper by proposing a novel system that integrates two Deep Learning models without the constraints of a predefined dictionary or language model. Object Detection techniques are employed in the first model to accurately identify lines, words, and punctuation marks, providing a robust foundation for text recognition. In the second model, a powerful recognition system is developed, trained on the IFN/ENIT dataset to predict character sequences from handwritten text images. The architecture is comprised of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with residual connections, followed by a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) layer, and culminates in a fully connected layer. State-of-the-art results in unconstrained Arabic text recognition tasks are achieved by this approach. © 2025 The Author(s).

Tree search hyper-heuristic with application to combinatorial optimization

In this study, we investigate using the state space search paradigm to construct heuristics in the form of Priority Rules for combinatorial optimisation problems. This is an alternative to Genetic Programming (GP) and other hyper–heuristics, which represent the most common approach currently used. To do that, we define the problem of designing heuristics as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem and then exploit Any-Time Depth-First Search to solve it. To limit the effective size of the search space, we introduced a set of powerful pruning mechanisms, some embedded into the problem definition as constraints, while others by means of constraint propagation procedures. To further reduce the search space, we propose a heuristic procedure that allows the algorithm to discard some non-promising PRs, at low computational cost. The proposed approach, termed Systematic Search and Heuristic Evaluation (SSHE), was evaluated on two hard combinatorial optimisation problems, namely the One Machine Scheduling Problem with time-varying capacity (denoted by (1,Cap(t)||∑Tj)) and the classic Travelling Salesman Problem. The results of the experimental study show that SSHE is quite competitive with GP in building PRs;in particular, the PRs obtained by SSHE and GP showcase similar performance, but the ones produced by SSHE have generally lower size and so better readability than the PRs produced by GP. © The Author(s) 2025.

Relationships Among e-Voting, e-Auction, e-Cheque, and e-Cash

This paper illustrates how a transformation technique can be used to demonstrate the relationship among e-voting, e-auction, e-cheque, and e-cash, even though they serve distinct purposes. Initially, we examine the definitions of e-cheque and e-cash schemes, along with their respective security models. Subsequently, we develop a systematic framework to transform e-cheque into e-cash, supported by formal proof demonstrating the security of the conversion. As a corollary, we further exemplify this integration with a generic transformation framework to obtain e-cash from e-voting directly by combining an existing transformation of e-voting into e-cheque and the transformation of e-cheque into e-cash which we established earlier. We apply our transformation framework to Li et al.’s transformed e-cheque scheme and Li et al.’s e-voting scheme to obtain a concrete, secure e-cash scheme that is IND-CCEA, IND-CIA, and EUF-CIA as an instance. Finally, we examine how our result contributes to the integration and relationship between e-voting, e-auction, e-cheque, and e-cash systems. © 2013 IEEE.

A novel hybrid photovoltaic/thermal-fuel cell system for efficient hydrogen, heat, and power generation: Techno-economic and environmental evaluation

This article presents techno-economic and environmental (3E) assessment of a novel hybrid photovoltaic thermal solar collector and fuel cell (PVT-FC) system for integrated electricity, heat, and green hydrogen (CPHH) production. The system configuration consists of PVT units, an electrolyzer, fuel cells (FCs), an inverter, and water and hydrogen storage tanks. The study uses MATLAB/Simulink® to assess technical, economic, and environmental factors, enhancing efficiency and competitiveness over conventional PV/FC systems. Key performance metrics including total power generation (PPVT-FC), hydrogen mass production (mPVT-FC), gross thermal power output (QPVT-FC) and overall system efficiency (ηPVT-FC) as well as levelized cost of energy (LCOE), levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH), Total Carbon Emission Reduction (TCER), and associated financial savings were assessed. The influences of system parameters—coolant inlet and outlet temperatures, mass flow rate, electrolyzer efficiency, fuel cell temperature and cell count—on output performance were explored. Findings reveal that as cooling fluid inlet temperature increases from 4 °C to 32 °C, the PPVT-FC and mPVT-FC declined. The PPVT-FC dropping from 2.0 kW to 0.75 kW and the ηPVT-FC 16%–8%, while the QPVT-FC remains stable at ∼689.5 kW. Increasing the coolant outlet temperature and electrolyzer efficiency enhances mPVT-FC and ηPVT-FC reaching a maximum efficiency of 18.06% at a 0.5 kg/s flow rate. Furthermore, increasing fuel cell temperature from 40 °C to 100 °C significantly improves overall ηPVT-FC and mPVT-FC, demonstrating the direct impact of thermal regulation on system performance. Results at different outlet temperatures show that higher coolant flow rates and electrolyzer efficiencies improve hydrogen yield and system efficiency, achieving a maximum of 18.06% efficiency at 0.5 kg/s flow rate. High-performance high-entropy perovskite cathodes with A-site deficiency and Ni doping derived from LaxSr1-xCoyFe1-yO3-δ for solid oxide fuel cells

In an effort to obtain simultaneous enhancement in the electrochemical performance and the electronic conductivity while achieving resistance to chromium (Cr) poisoning, here we developed high-entropy perovskite oxide with the composition of (La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Sr0.2Ba0.2)0.95(Co0.2Fe0.8)1-xNixO3-δ (HE-LSCF095Nix, x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15), which contains A-site deficiency and different amount of Ni doping. The composition that contains 0.10 Ni doping, i.e., HE-LSCF095Ni10 showed the highest electrochemical performance, i.e., the lowest polarization resistances (Rp) of 0.83 Ω cm2 at 650 °C and 0.39 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, which are much lower than those of its original high entropy parent perovskite analog La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Sr0.2Ba0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (HE-LSCF) of 2.14 Ω cm2 at 650 °C and 0.60 Ω cm2 at 700 °C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrical conductivity measurements revealed that the higher electrochemical performance for HE-LSCF095Ni10 relative to HE-LSCF is due to the lower oxygen vacancy formation energy (−52.75 eV −1 > 168.15 S cm−1 at 700 °C). Notably, following Cr treatment for 40 h, HE-LSCF095Ni10-based symmetrical cell displayed marginal increase in Rp, indicating good resistance to Cr poisoning. Anode-supported single cell based on HE-LSCF095Ni10, i.e., NiO-SDC|SDC|HE-LSCF095Ni10 showed relatively high peak power densities of 0.639, 0.806, and 0.939 W cm−2 at 650, 700, and 750 °C, respectively, which are comparable to the other cells based on best performing cathodes. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

In the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions of the United States,forests include extensive portions of standing dead *** regions showcase an intriguing phenomenon where the combined biomass of standing dead trees surpasses that of fallen and decomposing woody *** stems from a suite of factors including pest disturbances,management decisions,and a changing *** increasingly dry and hot conditions,dead timber on a landscape increases the probability that a fire will *** and characterizing the presence of standing dead trees on a landscape helps with forest management efforts including reductions in the wildfire hazard presented by the trees,and vulnerability of nearby park assets should the trees *** forest-based classification,exploratory data analysis,and cluster vulnerability analysis,this study characterized the occurrence and implications of standing dead trees within Yellowstone National *** findings show standing dead trees across the entire study area with varying *** clusters were cross-referenced with vulnerability parameters of distance to roads,distance to trails,distance to water,distance to buildings,and *** parameters inform fire ignition,propagation,and *** weighted sum of these parameters was used to determine the vulnerability incurred on the park assets by the clusters and showed the highest values nearest to park entrances and points of *** vulnerability clusters warrant priority management to reduce wildfire *** framework of this study can be applied to other sites and incorporate additional vulnerability variables to assess forest fuel and *** can provide a reference for management to prioritize areas for resource conservation and improve fire prevention and suppression efficiency.

Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) is one of the paradigm changes in cybersecurity, from the traditional perimeter-based model to perimeterless. This article studies the core concepts of ZTA, its beginning, a few use cases and future trends. Emphasising the always-verify and least privilege access, some key tenets of ZTA have grown to be integration technologies like Identity Management, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and real-time analytics. ZTA is expected to strengthen cloud environments, education, work environments (including from home) while controlling other risks like lateral movement and insider threats. Despite ZTA's benefits, it comes with challenges in the form of complexity, performance overhead and vulnerabilities in the control plane. These require phased implementation and continuous refinement to keep up with evolving organisational needs and threat landscapes. Emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will further automate policy enforcement and threat detection in keeping up with dynamic cyber threats. © 2025 IEEE.

This study proposes an innovative diabetes prediction chatbot that utilizes large language models (LLMs) to determine the likelihood of diabetes based on specific patient inputs. Unlike conventional machine learning models and in addition to providing precise, individualized, robust prediction of diabetes augmented by the percentage of its confidence, this chatbot provides detailed text-based explanations for its individual predictions and enhances user’s understanding by retrieving and presenting similar cases using case-based reasoning techniques. Utilizing key health indicators such as hypertension status, heart disease presence, smoking history, BMI, HbA1c level, and blood glucose levels, the chatbot not only predicts the presence of diabetes but also educates users about the underlying reasons for each prediction. The system's explanation module promotes transparency and trust in the predictive process. The proposed architecture integrates the retrieval augmented generation (RAG) technique with prompt engineering across multiple LLMs, including Llama 3.1, GPT-3.5, and Gemma2. This approach augments the chatbot’s responses with contextually relevant data from similar past cases, thereby enhancing both relevance and accuracy. Furthermore, RAG minimizes LLM hallucinations while enhancing them with up-to-date, precise, personalized medical information. The objective of this chatbot is to offer healthcare professionals and patients a dependable, educational instrument for early detection of diabetes supported by transparent AI principles. This will have a positive effect on preventative healthcare measures. © 2025 IEEE.

Partial Safety Factors Determination to Model Uncertainty on Persian Historic Masonry Elements

This research explores the determination of partial safety factors for Persian historical masonry walls, following Eurocode-6 principles, which account for material and geometric uncertainties. The study explores the impact of lateral constraints or boundary conditions (B.C.), Height-Length Proportion (α), the thickness of wall (t), and pre-compression levels as a gravity loading (P) on the structural behavior of these walls when subjected to uncertain conditions. Nonlinear pushover analyses were carried out on 200 masonry wall specimens, considering four α, ten variations in B.C. (including the impact of vertical (lateral walls) and horizontal (upper slabs) components), and three standard t (0.20, 0.35, and 0.50 m), all subjected to three different P (0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 MPa). The research also evaluates how variations in the modulus of elasticity and t affect the results under nonlinear analysis. Findings show that the Maximum Shear Capacity (F_u), maximum drift limit (δ_u/H), and effective stiffness (K_eff) are highly responsive to these variables. Higher F_u and K_eff were observed with increased t, P, and B.C., while reducing α had the opposite effect. As B.C., t, and P increased, δ_u/H showed a reduction, while a decrease in α led to an increase. The estimated F_u ranged 114.8–1476.5 kN, δu/H varied 1.56–3.43, and Keff spanned 7.72–250.80 kN/mm. The proposed partial safety factors are 1.17–1.96 for material strength (γ_M), 1.16–1.77 for displacement capacity (γ_du), and 1.15–1.96 for effective stiffness (γ_k). The results emphasize that increasing B.C., t, and reducing α result in higher γ_M and γ_k values, while γ_du values decrease. Additionally, all safety factors rise with increased P. These findings offer important insights for enhancing the preservation of Persian historical masonry structures. © The Author(s), under exclusive
