Workplace safety is crucial across all industries, particularly in dynamic environments like construction and road infrastructure. The application of computer vision holds promise in enhancing safety measures by automatically detecting hazards and identifying risks in real-time. Despite its potential, computer vision's role in workplace safety remains under-explored. This study investigates the effectiveness of three pre-trained versions of the YOLOv8 model in detecting reflective vests, a critical safety element, using real-world data. The YOLOv8 model offers fast and accurate recognition, enabling efficient monitoring of work activities and timely alerts for safety breaches. Results demonstrate the model's capability in improving workplace safety while maintaining manageable computational demands. This research underscores the significance of leveraging advanced technological solutions like CV to mitigate risks and ensure the well-being of employees in hazardous work environments. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel technique for enhancing the allocation of resources in the charging infrastructure for e-bikes by employing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in a context-specific manner. With the evolving transportation land-scape and the increasing popularity of electric micro-mobility solutions, efficient resource management plays a vital role. The methodology involves utilizing deep Q networks (DQN) in virtual environments to dynamically allocate charging resources based on contextual parameters. Through empirical analysis, we demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in achieving optimal resource allocation while considering the needs of diverse stakeholders. Findings suggest that the DQN model, when integrated with context-awareness and stakeholder objectives, enables efficient resource allocation, maximize fleet utilization, ensures charging station availability, enhances user satisfaction, and promotes environmental sustainability. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and industry stakeholders seeking to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of micro-mobility services in urban settings. Overall, this study contributes to the advancement of sustainable urban mobility solutions and underscores the potential of DRL in addressing complex urban transportation challenges. © 2024 IEEE.

Virtual Reality provides users with an unparalleled sense of presence, making them feel as if they are physically present in the virtual environment. It enables the digital preservation of cultural artifacts and artworks beyond conventional methods. Cultural artworks including cultural dance that descended from ancestors are increasingly forgotten. The younger generation is unaware of the value of carrying on the predecessors' legacies. VR experiences through 360-degree video may encourage future generations to explore and learn about their cultural heritage. Thus, introducing a VR 360-degree video for cultural preservation is proposed in this study. This paper presents the usage of virtual reality, the development of 360-degree videos, and an evaluation study to determine how well young people might use the videos. The 360-degree VR video followed stepwise approach in video production processes from pre-production, production, and to post-production. A software usability scale (SUS) was adopted to assess how usable this video is among youngsters. Fifty participants were involved in the testing. The result showed that the 360-degree VR video has an acceptable level of usability. This study has generally demonstrated that virtual reality has a positive outcome that could result in a larger and more extensive deployment for cultural heritage preservation activities. © 2023 IEEE.

This project explores the implementation of ROS for robot navigation in an indoor environment with narrow pathways typically found in a grocery shop or library. The study discusses the design of the integration of different components including hardware such as sensors and actuators, and algorithms in ROS. The system uses LiDAR to first map the real-world environment to determine the static components of the environment. The purpose of the project is to determine the optimal system integration to achieve obstacle detection and avoidance specifically on dynamic obstacles in environments with narrow pathways. The results show 100% collision-free navigation either through avoiding obstacles or re-routing to an obstacle-free course. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing number of patients in hospitals, the need for telehealth among the elderly, and the impact of the pandemic highlight the need for telemedicine services. Among them, the telemedicine consultation system (TCS) is the medium for doctors to communicate with patients in the telemedicine system. However, due to the problem of safety technology, it has not been widely applied. This literature review conducts a comprehensive search using keywords in authoritative index databases such as SCI and Scopus, aiming to find out the existing security problems and solutions of TCS, and establish security technology evaluation criteria for TCS in identity authentication, system authorization, data privacy protection and data transmission security. At the same time, a TCS technology evaluation criteria model is established to classify the security level of the system. © 2024 IEEE.

Cardiovascular disorders, a leading cause of death, demand urgent research attention. Early detection systems hold the potential to improve patient outcomes by enabling timely interventions and lifestyle adjustments. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence algorithms show promise in addressing complex challenges. This study investigates the application of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) optimized with metaheuristic algorithms for anomaly detection in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. We conducted a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms to determine their effectiveness in selecting optimal hyperparameters for RNN models, achieving acceptable accuracy levels. Notably, the relatively new crayfish optimization algorithm (COA) is included in the comparative analysis and has exhibited the best overall performance, demonstrating its potential for enhancing cardiovascular disorder detection. © 2023 IEEE.

Viola–Jones (VJ) algorithm holds a prominent and undeniable position in the computer vision field. Despite not being the most recent technology, it aids research to achieve advanced levels. Researchers can practically implement the built-in detector to establish various esteemed inventions. The well-known image processing software MATLAB and iOS also offer the VJ-based functions, ‘***’ and ‘CIDetector’ in their platforms. However, it may be difficult for researchers outside the machine-learning field to choose suitable detectors. Therefore, this study intends to present the process for creating the detectors and explore the fundamental concept of a VJ detector. The software technical performances of these methods in processing 12 images with 155 faces are reviewed. This study found that the self-trained VJ detector has the most reliable accuracy since it achieved a 0.994 detection rate and precision of 1. Yet, it used the longest execution time and only be the best option if the execution time was not a significant factor. Overall, the CIDetector has the best performance in computation efficiency. It has a 0.776 detection rate and 0.833 precision. Nevertheless, it might be unable to detect small faces or faces with occluded eyes. If the user does not want any faces to be undetected, the ‘***’ is a better option as it has a 0.999 detection rate and 0.815 precision. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Mobile gaming is an area of digital entertainment that provides platforms for social engagement, education, fun, and cognitive development. The success of mobile games is influenced by interaction design, which encompasses the user interface, usability, and user experience. This systematic review examines recent developments in interaction design approaches, usability principles, and factors affecting the uptake of interaction design in mobile gaming. Thirty primary studies, published between 2020 and 2024, were examined. In addition, the findings show that user-centered design is the most common approach, which emphasizes user participation throughout the design process. User control and freedom are highlighted as critical usability principles that emphasize the importance of users in controlling their actions and learning at their own pace. Technological factors are important for the adoption of an interaction design in mobile gaming. ©2024 IEEE.

Proper artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) model implementation and training are highly reliant on quality input data. However, the high costs of clinical studies and increasing privacy concerns limit the availability of medical data to researchers. This work explores the potential of applying generative adversarial networks (GAN) for generating synthetic medical data based on publicly available real-world datasets. Synthetic data is generated based on real-world observations and used to train several contemporary ML and AI models. These models are subjected to comparison with models trained on real data. Both trained models are evaluated under identical conditions on real-world testing data. These well-known, high-quality datasets are explored in this study covering diabetes and heart disease. While models trained on synthetic data show a slight decrease in objective performance, they still demonstrate viably accurate outcomes. This suggests that the introduced approach presents a potential stepping stone towards improvising data availability for researchers while respecting patients' best interests and patient privacy. © 2023 IEEE.
