Emotional learning involves two stages. The first is to acquire reinforcers from stimuli and the second is to associate such reinforcers with emotional responses. Both stages can be found occurring in the amygdala. LeDoux's fear circuit model [1] suggests two routes, a subcortical route and a cortical route, for emotional information entering the amygdala for associative learning. It can be used to explain how the actual recognition of emotions from facial expressions can be processed in the brain. Based on the model, a neural architecture is proposed using the stochastic Helmholtz machine (SHM) with the wake-sleep algorithm. In this paper, the results of three experiments about the subcortical emotional learning are reported, where different configurations of SHMs are involved. The first two experiments are to identify a suitable way to allow behavioural responses entering the central nucleus of the amygdala for association. However, both experiments show symptoms of overfitting, where some weights and biases of neurons are observed that will unusually increase during training. Therefore, the final experiment is designed to maintain the range of weights between -1 and +1 in order to solve the overfitting problem. The last experiment shows that the neural architecture with the new weight policy holds a lot of potential for modelling subcortical learning. © 2010 IEEE.

Social networking has become a part of our life. We redundantly share our personal information with people in social networks and Internet. These networks allow users to share just about everything: data, photos, videos, favorite music, status updates, and more applications. Sharing large amounts of information causes privacy and security problems for users in these networks. To prevent privacy problems, we can provide built-in applications that help to protect our privacy by limiting the friends who get access to our personal information. Many users still do not make use of these applications. Users fail to use the application either because they are not aware that it exists or because of the tedious process that is involved when manually grouping friends into different categories to form a friends list. The privacy problem has prompted us to provide a solution that offers the social networks users an opportunity to protect their privacy. In this study, a privacy and security technique, its algorithm and design were mentioned. Our approach proposes an API, which provides grouping of friends through an automated system into different social groups by analyzing the user's social graph and depending on what common information they would like to share that should not be accessed by other friends. We assume that a user shares the same information in a group, as we call social circles. Finding these social circles will help users to group their friends easily and meaningfully. © 2010 IEEE.

Several publications such as media articles have pointed out key technical challenges facing Uganda's National Transmission Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) project. The challenges emanate from the use of G652 instead of other fiber-optic cable types like the G655 fiber-optic cable. However, the articles do not suggest ways of addressing the technical limitations of the project. This paper uses an exploratory, quantitative and analytical approach to evaluate the goals of the project, and the already deployed part of the infrastructure, and compares the evaluation results, against the technical capability of the backbone, based on global backbone infrastructure performance benchmarks. A survey of previous work and results from related studies form inputs to a grounded theory-based hypothesis formulation. The paper highlights the national demand of bandwidth by all anticipated users such as government ministries, universities, schools, health centers, administrative headquarters and private sector entities. The findings of the study are validated through comparisons with results of investigations carried out on similar projects in developing countries. Finally the paper suggests ways of addressing the challenges of the NBI project using alternatives such as the use of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) repeaters after shorter distances, leasing bandwidth from private companies to cater for the deficit, use of microwave links for redundancy, setting up a Network Operation Center (NOC) for operation and maintenance, and deployment of WiMAX as a last mile solution.

This paper presents a quiz game agent who is attentive to the dynamics of multiple concurrent participants. The attentiveness of this agent is meant to be achieved by an utterance policy that determines the nature of the utterance and whether, when, and to whom to utter. Two heuristics are introduced to drive the policy: the interaction atmosphere (AT) of the participants and the participant who tends to lead the conversation (CLP) at a specifi time point. They are estimated from the activeness of the participants' face movements and acoustic information during their discussion of the answer. In order to the inherent drawback of a 2D agent that makes it difficult for multiple concurrent users to distinguish the focus of its attention, a physical pointer is also introduced. This system is then evaluated using questionnaire investigation and video data analysis. The joint results of the experiments indicated that the methods for estimating AT and CLP worked. The participants pay more attention to the agent and participate in the game more actively if the indication of the pointer is more comprehensive. Renewable energy offers alternative sources of energy which is in general pollution free, climate friendly, sustainable and unlimited. Therefore in the starting of 21st century, Government, utilities and research communities are working together to develop an intelligent power system that has potential to better integrate renewable energy sources with the grid. However, there are a number of potential challenges in integrating renewable energy with the existing grid due to its intermittent nature. This paper investigates about the potential challenges of integrating renewable energy with the smart power grid including the possible deployment issues for a sustainable future both nationally and internationally. The paper also proposes a prediction model that informs the typical variation of energy production as well as effect on grid integration using modern machine learning techniques.

Energy storage system is an integral part of renewable energy utilization process. Different articles, reports and examples shows the importance of storage but to make a sustainable system that generates electricity from renewable energy a feasibility study on generated energy cost is require. The unit price of grid electricity includes all types of expenditure from generation to consumption also add some profit on it but never consider compensation value due to the environmental hazardous greenhouse gas emission, however renewable energy doesn't emit any greenhouse gas. This paper presents the importance of storage in renewable energy environment by extensive study and literature review;moreover simulation work has been carried out to validate the requirement of such storage system. The importance of storage and it's feasibility were tested using HOMER, a computer aided tool developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Solar and wind data of Rockhampton in Australia has been considered for this model. Net present cost (NPC), cost of energy (COE) and renewable fraction (RF) have been measured as performance metrics. Amount of emitted greenhouse gas from this mixed system has also been considered. The model has been refined with sensitivity analysis and it is found that storage makes the renewable energy (wind and solar) feasible to implement in terms of economy and environment.

In the current information technology age, the demand of tools that meet social interaction needs, e.g. SocialTV and Internet-based media advertisement, is gaining in importance. Thus privacy becomes a matter of concern in this respect. Social interactions comprises privacy risks and threats that may enable abuse, e.g., man-in-the-middle attacks based on profile analysis at the server-side. Since in the area of SocialTV current software as well as hardware solutions are mostly server-centric, one cannot fully eliminate accidental or intentional risks and threats even by the reconstruction of users' personal information and their interdependencies. In this paper, we report on results of an evaluation of the potentials of SocialTV by considering end-users' privacy based on lab and field trials. In these trials we enabled eighteen people of various ages and expertise to use centralized as well as decentralized (group-centric) solutions for SocialTV by means of a Web-based software prototype. Further, we describe the followed methodology used by the evaluation in order to allow porting it for future evaluations in other social contexts. © 2010 IEEE.

Domain knowledge is found to be a crucial factor in attaining quality of requirements. System analysts, who have adequate knowledge of software often don't usually understand the organizational context well. This paper, presents a novel approach that utilizes the Tropos, Software System-Business Model (SS-BM) to requirements list elicitation. In the proposed method, requirements items are mapped to SS-BM elements based on their semantic meanings. The mapped requirements list and SS-BM are analyzed in specific sequence according to multiple checking points. Problems with the requirements list are identified in the analysis process and possible improvements are proposed. Quality indicators are used to summarize the quality of requirements at the end of the elicitation process.

An excessive power consumption characterizes all industries, even IT. Today, different methods of energy savings are in use, due to the pollution of the environment and the greenhouse effect. One of the newest methods in the IT is green IT that is directly connected with the virtualization of hardware resources. This study illustrates the procedure of hardware virtualization using real-world example and the analyses of the results in power consumption before and after the virtualization.

The use of one-shot pattern projection to obtain 3D dense reconstruction constitutes a promising field of research in structured light. Most of the related works presented in the literature are based on the projection of a fringe pattern to extract depth from phase deviation. However, the algorithms employed to unwrap the phase are computationally slow and can fail under certain slopes and occlusions in the object shape. In these lines, a color oneshot dense reconstruction using fringe pattern projection and wavelet decomposition is presented. Moreover, a novel phase unwrapping algorithm is proposed, providing a fast and reliable absolute phase map for depth reconstruction. © 2010 IEEE.
