In modeling environmental interfaces regarded as biophysical complex systems, one of the main tasks is to create an operative interface with the external environment. The interface should provide a robust and prompt translation of the vast diversity of external physical and/or chemical changes into a set of signals that are understandable for a biophysical entity. Although the organization of any system is of crucial importance for its functioning, it should not be forgotten that in biophysical systems we deal with real-life problems where a number of other conditions must be satisfied in order to put the system to work. One of them is the proper supply of the system with necessary substances. Their exchange in biophysical systems can be described by the dynamics of driven coupled oscillators. In order to study their behavior, we consider the dynamics of two coupled maps representing the substance exchange processes between two biophysical entities in their surrounding environment. Further, we investigate the behavior of the Lyapunov exponent as a measure of how rapidly two nearby orbits converge or diverge. In addition we calculate corresponding cross-sample entropy as a measure of synchronization.

Emotional learning involves two stages. The first is to acquire reinforcers from stimuli and the second is to associate such reinforcers with emotional responses. Both stages can be found occurring in the amygdala. LeDoux's fear circuit model suggests two routes, a subcortical route and a cortical route, for emotional information entering the amygdala for associative learning. It can be used to explain how the actual recognition of emotions from facial expressions can be processed in the brain. Based on the model, a neural architecture is proposed using the stochastic Helmholtz machine (SHM) with the wake-sleep algorithm. In this paper, the results of three experiments about the subcortical emotional learning are reported, where different configurations of SHMs are involved. The first two experiments are to identify a suitable way to allow behavioural responses entering the central nucleus of the amygdala for association. However, both experiments show symptoms of overfitting, where some weights and biases of neurons are observed that will unusually increase during training. Therefore, the final experiment is designed to maintain the range of weights between -1 and +1 in order to solve the overfitting problem. The last experiment shows that the neural architecture with the new weight policy holds a lot of potential for modelling subcortical learning.

Social simulation based on human behavioral data collected by web-based experimental system

We propose some models to simulate human choice behavior to select facilities. In order to consider models for human behavior, we develop a web-based experimental system to collect the data of human choice behavior in facility selection. Using the developed system, human subjects act their facility selection according to the information such as the congestion level of the facility selected last time. We examine several models to simulate human choice behavior based on the data collected by the experimental system. From our examination, we find that developing models according to experimental results improves simulation results.

In this paper, we present a tool-chain for the REMES language, which can be used for the construction and analysis of embedded system behavioral models. The tool-chain consists of the following tools: (i) a REMES editor for modeling behaviors of embedded components, (ii) a REMES simulator to test timing and resource behavior prior to formal analysis, and (iii) an automated transformation from REMES to Priced Timed Automata, needed for formal analysis. © 2010 ACM.

Renewable energy offers alternative sources of energy which is in general pollution free, climate friendly, sustainable and unlimited. Therefore in the starting of 21 st century, Government, utilities and research communities are working together to develop an intelligent power system that has potential to better integrate renewable energy sources with the grid. However, there are a number of potential challenges in integrating renewable energy with the existing grid due to its intermittent nature. This paper investigates about the potential challenges of integrating renewable energy with the smart power grid including the possible deployment issues for a sustainable future both nationally and internationally. The paper also proposes a prediction model that informs the typical variation of energy production as well as effect on grid integration using modern machine learning techniques.

Today, more than 80% of energy is produced from fossil fuels that pollute the air and surrounding environments each and every day, creating global warming. Therefore it is time to think about alternative sources of energy to build a climate friendly environment. In contrast to fossil fuels, renewable energy offers alternative sources of energy which are in general pollution free, unlimited, and environmentally sustainable. This paper presents a feasibility study undertaken to investigate the prospects of solar energy for the climate similar to Australia so as to further investigate the impacts of renewable energy sources in existing and future smart power systems. The monthly average global solar radiation has been collected for twenty-one locations in Australia from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Hybrid Optimisation Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER), and Renewable-energy and Energy-efficient Technologies (RETScreen) computer tools were used to perform comparative analysis of solar energy with diesel and hybrid systems. Initially, total net present cost (NPC), cost of energy (COE) and the renewable fraction (RF) were measured as performances metrics to compare the performances of different systems. For better optimisation, the model has been refined with a sensitivity analysis which explores performance variations due to solar irradiation and electricity prices. Finally, a statistical analysis was conducted to select the best potential places in Australia that produce maximum solar energy.

Modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle health monitoring systems that ensure secure and reliable operations of rail vehicles. In an earlier study, an energy-efficient data acquisition method was investigated to develop a monitoring system for railway applications using modern machine learning techniques, more specific classification algorithms. A suitable classifier was proposed for railway monitoring based on relative weighted performance metrics. To improve the performance of the existing approach, a rule-based learning method using statistical analysis has been proposed in this paper to select a unique classifier for the same application. This selected algorithm works more efficiently and improves the overall performance of the railway monitoring systems. This study has been conducted using six classifiers, namely REPTree, J48, Decision Stump, IBK, PART and OneR, with twenty-five datasets. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) learning tool has been used in this study to develop the prediction models. © 2010 IEEE.

EGEPT (Middle East GenBank Post) is a database that monitors submissions to the GenBank nucleotide database from Middle East countries. The data in EGEPT is browsable by country, institute, author, organism, and related publications. Statistics about the dataset is provided and charts that compare the Middle East countries to each other are automatically generated. EGEPT revealed that Qatar, Egypt, Oman, Tunisia, and Morocco are leading in terms of sequence submissions and related publications. However, the total submissions of all Arab countries is greatly lagging behind other Middle East countries and the rest of the world; a fact that reflects the current state of genomics research in Arab countries, and one that calls for a strategic remedy to the situation. The "Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC)" is a popular approach from the early nineties to our days. Its basic idea is the application of proper feedback that makes the behavior of the controlled system identical to that of the "reference model" that normally is simple enough to control. The idea has many particular variants with the common feature that they are designed by the use of Lyapunov's 2nd ("direct") method that normally applies a quadratic Lyapunov function constructed of the tracking error and further additional terms. Though this approach normally guarantees global asymptotic stability, its use can entail complicated tuning that may have disadvantages whenever very fast applications are needed. In this paper an alternative problem tackling, the application of "Robust Fixed Point Transformations (RFPT)" in the MRAC technique is recommended. This approach applies strongly saturated, multiplicative nonlinear terms causing a kind of "deformation" of the input of the available imprecise system model. Instead parameter tuning that is typical in the traditional MRAC it operates with a simple convergence guaranteed only within a local basin of attraction. This technique can well compensate the simultaneous consequences of modeling errors and external disturbances that normally can "fob" the more traditional, tuning based approaches. As a potential application paradigm the novel MRAC control of a "cart-beam-hamper" system is considered. The conclusions of the paper are illustrated by simulation results. © 2010 IEEE.

The population of 102Zr following the β decay of 102Y produced in the projectile fission of 238U at the GSI facility in Darmstadt, Germany has been studied. 102Y is known to ß decay into 102Zr via two states, one of high spin and the other low spin. These states preferentially populate different levels in the 102Zr daughter. In this paper the intensities of transitions in 102Zr observed are compared with those from the decay of the low-spin level studied at the TRISTAN facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory and of the high-spin level studied at the JOSEF separator at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich.
