Four group detection models (e.g. GDM, OGDM, SoDM and ComDM) are developed based on crime data features. These detection models are compared more common baseline SNA group detection algorithms. It is intended to find out, whether these four crime data specific group detection models can perform better than widely used k-core and n-clique algorithms. Two data sets which contain previously known criminal networks are used as testbeds.

The Augmented Knight's Castle (AKC) comprises traditional play figures and scenery embedded with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to enhance user experience by triggering various forms of audio output. In this paper we present the results of a user study with over 100 children to evaluate the AKC in terms of playful learning, compared with an identical, non-augmented version. Findings suggest that children who played with the AKC remembered facts about the Middle Ages that were presented to them in the form of verbal commentaries, both immediately after the play session as well as in a post-test two months later.

In this paper we present an environment composed of two solutions offering a flexible combination of general public personalised e-Care Services according to user's preference or available ICT media, and at a second level a service aiming cognitive and physical training for elderly people inside an independent living setting. Work from two European CIP projects - T-Seniority and LLM - is presented addressing the needs of a rapidly growing category occupied by the very old, namely the over-eighties, which are more likely to become ill and, are, therefore, more dependant. The ageing population creates a market on its own, where a significant amount of online services are provided. In the context of this investigation we examine the business benefits which offer a neutral, high quality infrastructure for product/service deployment.

Google has recently released the video compression format VP8 to the open source community. This new compression format competes against the existing H.264 video standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in collaboration with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This paper compares these two video coding standards in terms of video bit rate-distortion (quality) performance and the video network traffic variability with different long video sequences. We find that VP8 presently does not fulfill its promise to achieve twice the quality at half the bandwidth compared to H.264. The rate-distortion (RD) performance of VP8 is rather slightly below the RD performance of H.264. On the positive side, in contrast to H.264, VP8 has no license fees.

Modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle health monitoring systems that ensure secure and reliable operations of rail vehicles. In an earlier study, an energy-efficient data acquisition method was investigated to develop a monitoring system for railway applications using modern machine learning techniques, more specific classification algorithms. A suitable classifier was proposed for railway monitoring based on relative weighted performance metrics. To improve the performance of the existing approach, a rule-based learning method using statistical analysis has been proposed in this paper to select a unique classifier for the same application. This selected algorithm works more efficiently and improves the overall performance of the railway monitoring systems. This study has been conducted using six classifiers, namely REPTree, J48, Decision Stump, IBK, PART and OneR, with twenty-five datasets. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) learning tool has been used in this study to develop the prediction models.
