In this paper a possible application of a novel adaptive control approach is reported that fits to the “traditional line of thinking” according to which in the most practical cases neither very precise, nor even complete system model is needed for obtaining precise control for dynamical systems. The validity of this statement is briefly pointed out in the most popular approaches as the main idea of the Robust Sliding Mode / Variable Structure Controllers, in Lyapunov's 2nd Method, and in a recently published problem tackling based on the simple geometric interpretation of the Singular Value Decomposition. In the present approach differential equations are deduced from iterative Cauchy sequences to realize adaptive control of a coupled nonlinear system in “decoupled manner”, using single dimensional projections of the “acceleration space”. The paradigm on which the method is demonstrated is a 2 dimensional generalization of the originally single dimensional Φ 6 -type Van der Pol oscillator that is a popular paradigm of chaotic systems. Further possible generalizations of the novel method is outlined, too.

Systems manipulating large number of courses and students are called learning management systems (LMS). LMS have excellent performances implemented through advanced Web technologies but often poor or rarely used repository for storing institution's educational data. There still remains a problem of how to allow users of LMS to easily modify and integrate content form federated e-learning repositories into their courses. In this article we present analysis of present repository frameworks and projects. Also, we present possibilities of using FEDORA (Flexible Extensible Digital Repository Object Architecture) framework as a repository solution. A pilot application has been created for demonstration of interaction between LMS and repository.

We propose a novel knowledge-rich approach to measuring the similarity between a pair of words. The algorithm is tailored to Bulgarian and Russian and takes into account the orthographic and the phonetic correspondences between the two Slavic languages: it combines lemmatization, hand-crafted transformation rules, and weighted Levenshtein distance. The experimental results show an 11-pt interpolated average precision of 90.58%, which represents a sizeable improvement over two classic rivaling approaches. © 2009 International Workshop Multilingual Resources, Technologies and Evaluation for Central and Eastern European Languages, held in conjunction with the International Conference RANLP 2009 - Proceedings. In numerous practical applications precise control of a subsystem passively connected to a precisely controllable subsystem by elastic connection is needed. As typical example is a crane carrying its payload swinging on an elastic string can be mentioned. From the point of view of control technology this task is interesting since the connected degree of freedom has little damping and it is apt to keep swinging accordingly. The traditional approaches apply the input shaping technology to assist the human operator responsible for the manipulation task. In the present paper a novel adaptive approach applying fixed point transformations based iterations having local basin of attraction is proposed for simultaneously tackle the problems originating from the imprecisions of the available dynamic model of the system to be controlled and the swinging phenomenon. In the simulation investigations presented a simple model consisting of two connected masspoints is considered: one of them can directly by controlled by control forces, the other one (in the role of the payload) is dragged by the controlled point via an elastic spring. The control considers the 4th time-derivative of the trajectory of the dragged system.

The calculation of short-circuit currents in DC auxiliary systems of power plants and substations is essential for design and application of distribution and protective devices used in these systems. Because of differences between DC and AC auxiliary systems, DC system protection designers should be take into account that important fact in calculation and dimensioning of DC auxiliary system. There are several mathematical models that are usually used for calculation of short-circuit currents in DC auxiliary system. In this paper, the authors performed short-circuit currents calculation for one real DC auxiliary system of power plant using three different, well-known, mathematical models. The results of calculations were compared with results given by testing of selectivity of DC auxiliary system on the site. Based on comparison results of different calculations and testing on the site conclusion related to choice one of three the most often used mathematical models as the most suitable has deduced.

A simultaneous application of combinatorial testing and virtualization as a method for software testing

We propose in this paper a general framework for an integrated End-to-End Testing of IT Architecture and Applications using the simultaneous application of combinatorial testing and virtualization. Combinatorial testing methods are often applied in cases of the configuration testing. The combinatorial approach to software testing uses models, particularly an Orthogonal Array Testing Strategy (OATS) is proposed as a systematic, statistical way of testing pair-wise interactions to generate a minimal number of test inputs so that selected combinations of input values are covered. Virtualization, in the process of testing, is based on setting the necessary environment to multiple virtual machines, which run on one or in smaller groups of physical computers, which are: reduce the cost of equipment and related resources, reduce the time required to manage the testing process, and favors raising removal of test infrastructure. Together, combinatorial testing and virtualization presents practical approach to improving process of testing, through the balancing quality, cost and time.

This paper deals with colour image authentication technique using a high capacity watermarking algorithm. The watermark is embedded into the green channel of the host image by modifying the very low frequency coefficients of the DCT transformation. The new algorithm can embed watermarking information in up to 25% of the host image size. The new technique can resist classical attacks such as JPEG compression, low pass filtering, median filtering, cropping, and scaling attacks. Moreover, the recovery method is blind since it does not need the original host image for extraction.

In this paper we discuss one relatively hidden but important issue related to information systems development - weak integration of performing and managing the information systems development. Among others, two causes for such weak integration are identified as important-weak integration of methodological support to the performing and managing the development, and difficulties in knowledge transfer. We show that in practice this may have some important adverse consequences for development process, such as communication problems between engineering and managerial parts of the development team, or insisting on application of inappropriate method. In this paper we argue that the methodological integration is, rather than methodological innovation, a potential solution to this problem - both processes have traditionally quite well developed methodological support but the essential interconnection of these methods is often missing. As another potential improvement primarily intended to facilitate knowledge transfer within development team, we also suggest stronger integration of knowledge that the development process managers should possess.

Access control models describe frameworks that dictate how subjects (e.g. users) access resources. In the role-based access control (RBAC) model access to resources is based on the role the user holds within the organization. RBAC is a rigid model where access control decisions have only two output options: grant or deny. break the glass (BTG) policies on the other hand are flexible and allow users to break or override the access controls in a controlled and justifiable manner. The main objective of this paper is to integrate BTG within the NIST/ANSI RBAC model in a transparent and secure way so that it can be adopted generically in any domain where unanticipated or emergency situations may occur. The new proposed model, called BTG-RBAC, provides a third decision option BTG, which grants authorized users permission to break the glass rather than be denied access. This can easily be implemented in any application without major changes to either the application code or the RBAC authorization infrastructure, apart from the decision engine. Finally, in order to validate the model, we discuss how the BTG-RBAC model is being introduced within a Portuguese healthcare institution where the legislation requires that genetic information must be accessed by a restricted group of healthcare professionals. These professionals, advised by the ethical committee, have required and asked for the implementation of the BTG concept in order to comply with the said legislation.
