In this paper a further step towards a novel approach to adaptive nonlinear control developed at Budapest Tech in the past few years is reported. Its main advantage in comparison with the complicated Lyapunov function based techniques is that its fundament is some simple geometric consideration allowing to formulate the control task as a Fixed Point Problem for the solution of which various Contractive Mappings can be created that generate Iterative Cauchy Sequences for Single Input - Single Output (SISO) systems. These sequences can converge to the fixed points that are the solutions of the control tasks. Recently alternative potential solutions were proposed and sketched by the use of special functions built up of the "response function" of the excited system under control. These functions have almost constant values apart from a finite region in which they have a "wrinkle" in the vicinity of the desired solution that is the "proper" fixed point of these functions. It was shown that at one of their sides these fixed points were repulsive, while at the opposite side they were attractive. It was shown, too, that at the repulsive side another, so called "false" fixed points were present that were globally attractive, with the exception of the basins of attraction of the "proper" ones. This structure seemed to be advantageous because no divergences could occur in the iterations, the convergence to the "false" values could easily be detected, and by using some ancillary tricks in the most of the cases the solutions could be kicked from the wrong fixed points into the basins of attraction of the "proper ones". It was expected that via adding simple rules to the application of these transformations good adaptive control can be developed. However, due to certain specialties of these functions practical problems arose. In the present paper novel transformations are presented that seem to evade these difficulties. Their applicability is illustrated via simulations in the ad

One of the most important bits of every search engine is the query interface. Complex interfaces may cause users to struggle in learning the handling. An example is the query language SQL. It is really powerful, but usually remains hidden to the common user. On the other hand the usage of current languages for Internet search engines is very simple and straightforward. Even beginners are able to find relevant documents. This paper presents a hybrid query language suitable for both image and text retrieval. It is very similar to those of a full text search engine but also includes some extensions required for content based image retrieval. The language is extensible to cover arbitrary feature vectors and handle fuzzy queries.
As computing is changing and becoming increasingly social in nature, the role of emotions in computing has become ever more relevant and commercial. Emotions are central to culture, creativity, and interaction. The to...

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) was pleased to present the AAAI 2008 Spring Symposium Series, held Wednesday through Friday, March 26-28, 2008, at Stanford University, California. The eight symposia were titled (1) AI Meets Business Rules and Process Management, (2) Architectures for Intelligent Theory-Based Agents, (3) Creative Intelligent Systems, (4) Emotion, Personality, and Social Behavior, (5) Semantic Scientific Knowledge Integration, (6) Social Information Processing, (7) Symbiotic Relationships between Semantic Web and Knowledge Engineering, (8) Using Al to Motivate Greater Participation in Computer Science. The goal of the AI Meets Business Rules and Process Management AAAI symposium was to investigate the various approaches and standards to represent business rules, business process management, and the semantic web with respect to expressiveness and reasoning capabilities. The focus of the Architectures ror Intelligent Theory-Based Agents AAAI symposium was the definition or architectures for intelligent theory-based agents, comprising languages, knowledge representation methodologies, reasoning algorithms, and control loops. The Creative Intelligent Systems symposium included five major discussion sessions and a general poster session (in which all contributing papers were presented). The purpose of this symposium was to explore the synergies between creative cognition and intelligent systems. The goal of the Emotion, Personality, and Social Behavior symposium was to examine fundamental issues in affect and personality in both biological and artificial agents, focusing on the roles of these factors in mediating social behavior. The Semantic Scientific Knowledge Integration symposium brought together the semantic technologies community with the scientific information technology community in an effort to build the general semantic science information community. The Social Information Processing symposium's goal was to

Organizations can use enterprise architecture frameworks, to manage system complexity, integrating business and information technology (IT) resources. Enterprise architecture frameworks also help organizations in overcoming the challenges of increasing the efficiency of IT resources, while enabling them to continue business innovations. IT architectures also influence the integration and standardization requirements of company's operating model, helping it to achieve business efficiency and growth in profitability. Enterprise architecture provides several fundamental benefits that include technological and process infrastructure for developing an IT strategy, while integrating business strategies and implementations. It also allows an organization to view different aspects of the information system from various perspectives.

In this paper we deal with the problem of addition of new documents in collection when documents are represented in lower dimensional space by concept indexing. Concept indexing (CI) is a method of feature construction that is relying on concept decomposition of term-document matrix. By using CI original representations of documents are projected on the space spread by centroids of clusters, which are called concept vectors. This problem is especially interesting for application on World Wide Web. Proposed methods are tested for the task of information retrieval. Vectors on which the projection is done in the process of dimension reduction are constructed on the basis of representations of all documents in the collection, and computation of the new representations in the space of reduced dimension demands recomputation of concept decomposition. The solution to this problem is the development of methods which will give approximate representation of newly added documents in the space of reduced dimension. In the paper are introduced two methods for addition of new documents in the space of reduced dimension. In the first method there no addition of new index terms and added documents are represented by existing list of index terms, while in the second method list of index terms is extended and representations of documents and concept vectors are extended in dimensions of newly added terms. It is shown that representation of documents by extended list of index terms does not improve performance of information retrieval significantly.

The main contribution of this paper is a practical application of generalised neural networks for a dextrous hand moved by Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). Since SMA have highly non-linear characteristics and their parameters depend on the environment (mainly on temperature) so the robot hand is controlled by a generalised neural network, which can learn the actual non-linear characteristics of the robot hand. The experimental setup consists of a 20 degree of freedom hand moved by SMA string used as artificial muscle. A video camera is used to detect the position of Joints. The position is then sent to the visual display computer via the Internet, which displays the hand in 3D using OpenGl.

The advancement of traffic makes world more and more internationalized and increases frequency of communication between people who come from different cultures. Differences in their conversation go beyond the languages they speak to the non-verbal behaviors they express while talking. To improve the abilities of the embodied conversational agents (ECAs) while interacting with human users we are working on the ECA based application, a tour guide of city Dubrovnik that servers visitors in Japanese, Croatian and general western cultures speaking in English. This paper presents the overall architecture and explains possible extension with another culture. It describes issues we met while making agent talk in Croatian and proposed solutions.
