The past two years have been a turbulent time for the New Economy generally - and for the digital content industry in particular. In the wake of the *** and telecoms crashes, smaller companies are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain the advice they need to make strategic decisions (such as, for example, whether to modify their business model, or whether to buy or sell a subsidiary). The WWW (World Wide Web) has had a significant influence on some industries - particularly the digital content industry. In this paper we show how the advent of the WWW is changing the business models of the online news and music sectors in Europe. Our findings are based on the first two phases of a three-phase, European Commission-funded market survey. In the paper we consider in greater detail the Internet business models of these companies, discussing the changes taking place in these two fast-moving digital content sectors, the evolution of the business models within them, the driving forces we have identified and, finally, some predictions about what the future may hold for both these sectors.

Multimedia in health care is a topic of growing interest. Guideline presentation, utility and adherence require intelligence and multimedia to interact in decision support environments. In this paper we aim at identifying guideline logic during statistical analysis. The case study is drawn from a regional perspective on analysis and production of data, information and knowledge.

An environment targeted to e-learning is presented for teaching advanced test issues in digital electronics. Digital circuits and systems are getting more and more complex, and in the same time the requirements for the quality of systems are getting higher and higher. This is the reason why the importance of testing as an engineering task has started to grow extremely fast. An environment which consists of a set of Java applets has been created to help the students to improve their understanding of test. The tools support university courses on digital electronics, computer hardware, testing and design for testability to learn by hands-on exercises how to generate test patterns, and how to analyze their quality. The tasks chosen for hands-on training represent simultaneously real research problems, which allow to foster in students critical thinking, problem solving skills and creativity. © 2005 IEEE.

The similarity measurements and the representation of the visual features are two important issues in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper, we compared between the combination of wavelet-based representations of the texture feature and the color feature with and without using the color layout feature. To represent the color information, we used global color histogram (GCH) beside the color layout feature and with respect to the texture information; we used Haar and Daubechies wavelets. Based on some commonly used Euclidean and Non-Euclidean similarity measures, we tested different categories of images and measured the retrieval accuracy when combining such techniques. The experiments showed that the combination of GCH and 2-D Haar wavelet transform using the cosine distance gives good results while the best results obtained when adding the color layout feature to this combination by using the Euclidean distance. The results reflected the importance of using the spatial information beside the color feature itself and the importance of choosing good similarity distance measurements.

In software/content development in intercultural environments, collaboration among participants and effective administration are crucial for overall successful projects. Various tools are used to achieve the collaboration and the administration of the project: no single groupware is sufficient for both collaboration support and management. Therefore, interoperability among various tools employed in one project is essential for efficient collaboration. To establish semantic interoperability of collaboration tools, we have designed an RDF tag set that can function as vocabulary to describe information interoperably among the tools. In this paper, we propose a tag set to describe information in intercultural projects and show how the data in collaboration tools and project management tools are integrated with those semantic tags. With the tag set and the supporting method, it is expected that the members and the administrators do not have to pay much efforts to keep the collaboration status.

We developed a 3D data transmitting and displaying system with an omni-directional display for group learning. The omni-directional display system enables many users to watch 3D images from each viewpoint without wearing special devices. Therefore, we consider that the omni-directional display is an effective 3D displaying method in the environment of group learning. In our system, we reconstruct 3D shapes of objects from images which are captured by multi-viewpoint cameras. Next, we transmit reconstructed data to remote places and display on the omni-directional display. We realize a series of these process in real-time. Moreover, we implemented a PDA-based control user interface for the omni-directional display system, and realized the control freely from any positions around the display.

Today's information technology society increasingly relies on software at all levels. Nevertheless, software quality generally continues to fall short of expectations, and software systems continue to suffer from symptoms of aging as they are adapted to changing requirements and environments. The only way to overcome or avoid the negative effects of software aging is by placing change and evolution in the center of the software development process. In this article we describe what we believe to be some of the most important research challenges in software evolution. The goal of this document is to provide novel research directions in the software evolution domain.

We improve, by using register machines, some existing universality results for specific models of P systems. P systems with membrane creation are known to generate all recursively enumerable sets of vectors of non-negative integers, even when no region (except the environment) contains more than one object of the same kind. We here show that they generate all recursively enumerable languages, and two membrane labels are sufficient (the same result holds for accepting all recursively enumerable vectors of non-negative integers). Moreover, at most two objects are present inside the system at any time in the generative case. Then we prove that 10 + m symbols are enough to generate any recursively enumerable language over m symbols. P systems with active membranes without polarizations are known to generate all recursively enumerable sets of vectors of non-negative integers. We show that they generate all recursively enumerable languages; four starting membranes with three labels or seven starting membranes with two labels are sufficient. P systems with active membranes and two polarizations are known to generate/accept all recursively enumerable sets of vectors of non-negative integers, only using rules of rewriting and sending objects out. We show that accepting can be done by deterministic systems. Finally, remarks and open questions are presented.

We have established a medical network in Asia-Pacific area with high-quality moving image on a super broad-banded internet line since February 2003. Broadcasting real-time surgery and teleconference with medical-quality videos with Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) were so useful to learn surgical techniques and other medical procedures beyond borders. We have conducted 20 events in categories of teleconference (8 times), live transmission of medical procedure (6 times), and remote attendance to scientific medical meetings (6 times) until September 2004. We had teleconferences among 3 countries in APAN-Hawaii in January 2004 (Japan, Korea and USA), and in APAN-Cairns in July 2004 (Japan, Korea and Australia). There have been no serious transmission/ ethical problems sofar. With these experiences and current achievements, we hope to extend this advanced network system to whole Asia-Pacific countries to share medical skills and knowledge. © 2005 IEEE.
