The paper deals with design of a robust controller via algebraic mu-synthesis for two tank system, which is a well known benchmark problem. The controller is designed by decoupling two-input two-output system into two identical SISO (Single-Input Single-Output) plants. The task of designing the robust controller is then performed by finding a suitable pole placement for the SISO systems with the robustness assessed by structured singular value denoted mu for generalized plant. The final controller is compared with D-K iteration as a standard tool for mu-synthesis through simulation for nominal plant and plant perturbed by the worst case perturbation.

The contribution is focused on brief description of proposed control design process and primarily on practical application of obtained simple robust control algorithms. The synthesis is based on general solutions of Diophantine equations in the ring of proper and stable rational functions, Youla-Kucera parameterization and divisibility conditions and one of its main advantages can be seen in existence of single scalar tuning parameter. The real-time control behaviour has been tested on laboratory model of hot-air tunnel which has been mathematically described by various transfer functions containing parametric type of uncertainty.

Robots are complex systems that require multidisciplinary approach to development. Hence, both research and production of a robotic system require a tool that would provide means for coordination between teams with different areas of expertise as well as the ability to integrate, simulate and debug the system in a comprehensive way. Also, with the growing popularity of service robotics, research and modeling of human-machine interaction gains the attention. From a simulation tool, it is expected to support the means for describing this interaction. For that purpose we are investigating the ML Designer TM , not just as a possible simulation tool, but also as a modeling and design paradigm. For verification purposes we will compare it against MATLAB Simulink TM . A pneumatic system will be modeled with both tools and a comparison will be performed.

In this paper a method to estimate the initial rotor position of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) at the stand still condition is proposed. The proposed method can be implemented by the simple microcontroller based system, and it is not necessary to know the magnetization curves. The impulse gate drive signal is applied and the winding current is detected and its approximate value is used for calculating the rotor position. The compensation method to reduce the estimation error thorough one cycle is also mentioned. The proposed method is implemented with the 6-stator-pole and 4- rotor-pole, 1.5 kW 3-phase switched reluctance motor.

The paper analyses power quality requirements for isolated systems. Standards used within this framework are taken from widely used classification societies rules, international standards applied to shore and off-shore units. The norms can be also divided into merchant and navy ships, both are analyzed. The requirements themselves are just a simple indication tool of the electric power quality. Hence, four real time examples are presented: 1) a navy ship with regular propeller, 2) an all electric ship with power network exceeded 1 MVA, 3) a passenger ship with 6.6 kV network and 4) equipment installed on shore, i.e. 120 kVA uninterruptible power supply system. For some of the presented examples standards are not fulfilled, which is discussed and some remarks are given.

A neural-adaptive control solution is exposed in this paper. The control strategy is based on the linear adaptive neuron, which is called ADALINE. Unlike other neural control solutions, based on perceptrons neurons characterized by a long time learning process and a difficult on-line tuning of weights, this approach uses a fast algorithm, which adapts on-line the neuron's weights. Therefore the non-linear character of control law is induced by the permanent changes of neuron weights, which are variable parameters of controller. This paper presents issues regarding short term electric load forecasting using feedforward and Elman recurrent neural networks. The study cases were developed using measured data representing electrical energy consume from Banat area. There were considered 35 different types of structure for both feedforward and recurrent network cases. For each type of neural network structure were performed many trainings and best solution was selected. The issue of forecasting the load on short term is essential in the effective energetic consume management in an open market environment.

This paper discusses the application of the idea of federated filtering to the estimation of intrinsically nonlinear distributed systems by examining its impacts on filtering performance by using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) as state estimator. Specifically, the performance of the traditional centralized solution is compared with the filtering structure obtained using the federating idea, and their conceptions, and their ability to balance between fault tolerance and estimation accuracy is examined. Our research demonstrates how successfully the EKF for solving nonlinear estimation problems in federated structures can be used, noting that the idea of federation have only been demonstrated for linear problems previously. In addressing the demands of both fault tolerance and estimation accuracy, it is shown that increased filtering accuracy is relied on the proper choice of sharing of the error covariance information between local filters, while sensor fault tolerance is provided by the utilization of an appropriate resetting policy of the filter.

Taking Si(111)4×1−In as a prototype reconstruction, we have examined the possibility of modifying an adsorbate-induced reconstruction by varying the averaged lattice constant of the substrate. In the experiment, the lattice constant of Si(111) substrate has been increased by forming a thin alloying GexSi1−x layer on Si(111). It has been found that this action results in removing the 4×1 reconstruction and developing a 7×3 reconstruction, the transformation being completed when more than 0.3 ML (monolayer) of Ge has been incorporated into the substrate. The 7×3 reconstruction has a striped-shaped structure built of double rows and plausibly contains 0.1 ML of In and 0.65±0.04 ML of Si(Ge) atoms and, like the 4×1, demonstrates metallic properties. The 7×3 reconstruction is not observed in “pure” In∕Si(111) and In∕Ge(111) systems. We believe that the artificial variation of substrate lattice constant not only provides a possibility of examining the role of surface stress in reconstructions but also opens a degree of freedom for engineering other types of reconstructions.
