The rapid proliferation of intelligent Internet of Health Things (IoHT) applications within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic has exerted significant strain on the backhaul network infrastructure. This paper aims to introduce a novel framework that leverages software-defined networking (SDN) to enhance edge computing capabilities. This framework will expect to facilitate dynamic and adaptable communication between edge and cloud servers, specifically designed to support real-time Internet of Health Things applications. Through the establishment of a connection between servers and the software-Defined Networking controller, the system is expected to facilitate load balancing, network optimization, and the utilization of resources in an efficient manner. This, in turn, enables the provision of real-time healthcare services. Ultimately, the efficacy of the suggested framework is assessed by analyzing its impact on service response time. The research results indicate that the proposed framework significantly benefits IoHT systems' service response times across various workloads and traffic. © 2024 IEEE.

This study examines decision-making in software re-engineering within businesses, focusing on the challenges and considerations involved. Financial constraints, time, and staff efforts are critical factors in these decisions. The study identifies difficulties faced by top-level management with legacy systems, existing systems, underused systems, and packaged software due to user resistance and customer dissatisfaction. The primary goal of the study is to assess the importance of software quality factors, especially from the users' perspective, in making re-engineering decisions. It uses the ISO 9126 Model to analyze quality elements in the case study software, aiming to provide guidance for deciding whether to proceed with re-engineering. The study explores functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability as factors influencing re-engineering decisions, based on the ISO 9126 model. To understand user interactions and program performance, the study used unstructured participant observation in the case study software, highlighting the challenges faced by top management due to user resistance. These findings were further confirmed through face-to-face interviews with software users and department employees, offering insights into their perspectives on software quality elements. The results reveal that, despite some flaws, the system has valuable features and capabilities. Most employees express a desire to undergo re-engineering to enhance service quality, align with ISO 9126 standards, and leverage the expertise of competent staff for re-engineering activities. © 2023 IEEE.

The human brain's intricate functions are under-pinned by a vast network of synapses that enable chemical impulses between neurons. Neuroscientists employ two key approaches, functional and effective connectivity, to understand the brain's complexity, focusing on its operations, cognition, and behavior. While both methods utilize graph theory for network analysis, functional connectivity, which investigates associated brain activity, has seen more substantial research efforts than effective connectivity, which examines information processing's inter-regional impacts. In this research paper, we aim to present an extensive examination of the emerging discipline that combines graph theory with the analysis of brain characteristics, shedding light on how these characteristics arise from the interactions among different groups of neurons. Our primary focus lies in exploring the diverse cognitive and neurological applications that leverage functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) as a tool. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive overview of the methods employed to construct brain networks based on functional and efficient connections. Throughout the discussion, we emphasize the advantages and limitations associated with these approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

Incremental Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation (iFSS) tackles a task that requires a model to continually expand its segmentation capability on novel classes using only a few annotated examples. Typical incremental approaches encounter a challenge that the objective of the base training phase (fitting base classes with sufficient instances) does not align with the incremental learning phase (rapidly adapting to new classes with less forgetting). This disconnect can result in suboptimal performance in the incremental setting. This study introduces a meta-learning-based prototype approach that encourages the model to learn how to adapt quickly while preserving previous knowledge. Concretely, we mimic the incremental evaluation protocol during the base training session by sampling a sequence of pseudo-incremental tasks. Each task in the simulated sequence is trained using a meta-objective to enable rapid adaptation without forgetting. To enhance discrimination among class prototypes, we introduce prototype space redistribution learning, which dynamically updates class prototypes to establish optimal inter-prototype boundaries within the prototype space. Extensive experiments on iFSS datasets built upon PASCAL and COCO benchmarks show the advanced performance of the proposed approach, offering valuable insights for addressing iFSS challenges. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm using a parameter server (PS) to coordinate multiple decentralized clients for training a common model without exposing their raw data. Despite its amazing capability in preserving data privacy, FL confronts two significant challenges that have not been sufficiently addressed by existing works, which are: 1) heterogeneous data distributed on clients given that the PS cannot alter data locations. 2) limited computation resources of FL clients who may conduct model training with mobile devices. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel federated one-shot transferring of intermediate features (FedOTF) algorithm. More specifically, FedOTF consists of two stages: feature extraction and model reconstruction. To overcome challenge 1, clients in stage 1 only collaboratively train a small model in a federated manner, with the objective to extract features. In stage 2, intermediate features (generated by the small model trained by stage 1) are transferred from clients to the PS so that a large model can be trained to overcome challenge 2. In addition, the design of FedOTF is robust, which can flexibly diminish the number of communication rounds of stage 1 when network capacity is limited, and reduce the amount of exposed features when privacy is concerned. To verify the superiority of FedOTF, we conduct comprehensive experiments with real datasets. The experiment results demonstrate that FedOTF can significantly improve the model utility of FL because a better model can be finally obtained by the PS without incurring heavy computational load on clients. Besides, we conduct robustness evaluation of FedOTF which can achieve stable performance when varying network capacity and privacy requirement. © 2023 IEEE.

Psychological disorders are considered chronic illnesses that affect a wide range of populations. Some studies in the United States indicate that one in every eight individuals is affected by a psychological disorder. Additionally, individuals with a psychological disorder often have an impact on the nature of the lives of those around them. It is beneficial to detect the illness in its early stages to increase the likelihood of recovery. In this research, thirteen classification algorithms are used. Each algorithm has an interesting approach. It can be used to analyze several datasets where three datasets specific to Psychiatric patients were selected. The datasets have been chosen from UCI Machine Learning Repository. The datasets were re-analyzed after only 50% of the characteristics were approved after being evaluated by the several feature selection techniques. The main objective of this research is to find the best classifier and feature selection strategy in analyzing datasets of Psychiatric patients. After conducting numerous comparisons, it became evident that, the best classifier for the Autism-Adult-Data dataset are Bagging and Random Forest. As for the best learning strategy, it was found to be Functions and Trees, the best feature selection was obtained using Symmetrical Uncourt Attribute Evaluation. Both IBK and KStar classifier proved to be the best classifier for the Parkinson's dataset, Lazy demonstrated to be the most effective learning strategy, Correlation Attribute Evaluation technique yielded the best feature selection. Logistic emerged as the best classifier for planning-relax dataset, the best learning strategy was Bayes, the best feature selection was found to be Symmetrical Uncert Feature Selection. © 2024 IEEE.

This study evaluates federated learning models' performance compared to centralized models using the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets. Four models were tested: two Federated Learning models and two centralized models. The evaluation focused on accuracy, training rounds, and CO2 emissions, to optimize convergence and reducing energy consumption while maintaining strong model performance. The results showed that Federated learning models outperformed centralized models, with the Federated Learning MNIST model achieving 98.79% accuracy compared to 87.93% for the centralized model. Also, the accuracy of the Federated Learning CIFAR-10 model achieved 91.20% accuracy, exceeding the centralized model's 90.14%. The most accuracy improvements happened in the early training rounds. An adjusted hill-climbing technique was used to the centralized models, decreasing the number of iterations and CO2 emissions without significantly reducing accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Human face detection from video sequences is a difficult problem in computer vision. Face detection is the process of determining the location of a face or faces in each frame of a video. Face detection in real-time videos is an ongoing under-investigated research problem. This paper proposes a new method for face detection in videos that significantly reduces the time required to detect faces. The method targets a Search Area Boundary (SAB) in the next frames that are determined based on the position of the detected faces in the current frame. The model will look for the face in a box that is slightly larger than the SAB from the previous frame. This means that it will not search the entire video frame for the face, so it will take less time to find the face. After a few frames, the method will begin searching the entire frame for new faces. The results show that the proposed method can save up to 73.5% of the time, especially when the SAB is small, with an accuracy degradation of no more than 7% in the best case. © 2023 IEEE.

Hidden Markov Models have proved to be a very significant tool for various time-series related problems, especially where context is important. One such problem is Part-of-speech tagging. The work uses a customized HMM to propose an effective and advanced solution to POS tagging. With a precision rate of 0.9657, recall of 0.9656, and F1-score of 0.9655, this proposed HMM-based model achieves an exceptional level of accuracy, exhibiting its accurate identification of the POS of words in a sentence. The statistical model employed by the HMM-based method predicts the most likely POS tags while taking into account the probabilities of transition between various POS tags. The model's dependability and resilience were demonstrated when it was tested on a different dataset after being trained on a extensive collection of text data. The study's findings demonstrate that the HMM-based strategy outperforms current POS tagging techniques, making it a significant contribution to the field of natural language processing. In addition, this research has significant implications for a number of NLP applications, including sentiment analysis, machine translation, and text categorization, paving the way for additional innovation and exploration in this domain. © 2023 IEEE.

ChatGPT is a powerful chatbot that used to generate human-like text. Chat GPT, developed by OpenAI, can answer many questions honestly, like a personal teacher who knows almost everything. It can perform various tasks such as question and answer, solving mathematical equations, writing text, debugging, and translating between languages. Compared to traditional chatbots, ChatGPT has been adopted by many users since its introduction. Some users feel that ChatGPT will override most content creation professions. This study analyzed users’ feelings about ChatGPT by analyzing tweets shared about ChatGPT. For this purpose, a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model was developed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Bi- Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) models. The study has been compared with a number of DL and Machine Learning algorithms, LSTM, Bi-LSTM, CNN, Gated Recurrent Unit, Random Forests and Support Vector Machines. The experimental outcomes demonstrated that, the FastText-trained CNN-Bi-LSTM model exceeded the other models in terms of accuracy, reaching 96.59%.
